Americans hearing about the Fall of Berlin and hearing the victory speech while sitting in a muddy trench in Okinawa still trying to take that danm hill.

Most people don’t even know the Soviets fought the Japanese. The whole topic of the relations between the two countries even before WW2 is fascinating.
And the fact that the Senkaku Islands dispute is still going on is interesting which technically that means WW2 is still going on between Russia and Japan!

Many of the Soviets that fought in Manchuria against the Japanese were battle hardened from the Eastern Front Conflict against Germany, the largest military conflict in human history. They celebrated at the Reichstag and then at the Kremlin Victory Parade, but immediately afterwards were sent to Manchuria.

Eh, not really, there was a sizable force of no less than 4 million soldiers during entire war with Germany. The only ones that really came en masse were tank crews and and pilots.
My grandfather served in the Soviet army during the attack on Manchuria. He said that the Chinese were absolutely intimidated by the Japanese and were afraid of their own shadow.
Its understandable considering how unstable China was at that time and all of the crimes against humanity Japan committed
I guess it was good then that after "saving the day" they could finish the work by filling the massgraves with the rest of the locals there. Hope your grandpa wasn't there to do what a lot of the red army did.

On a different note, the reason Japanese tanks where utterly horrible compared to other allied or axis(specifically German)tanks is because they didn't really focus on them as much, as they focused more on naval and aircraft production, so what do you do as an infantry soldier with no good tanks or antique AT weapons? you become the AT weapon.
Their artillery capabilities went as far as their planes could reach, if you get what I mean ;)
The tanks were of little use in the many Pacific islands that required extra effort for them to be carried from island to island constantly. And even when they got to the island it was often full of forests and jungles which is the kind of terrain that all tank crews fear.
Also, by 1942 the US had achieved mostly air superiority in the skies and any tanks that were caught in the open were great targets for the American Air Force.
In addition by the time the island hopping campaign started, the Japanese were fully on the defensive,something which tanks are not made for.
Finally, Imperial Japan was, like it’s ally Nazi Germany, short on resources and manpower, meaning if they mass produced tanks, there would be not enough fuel to run them all.
Don't forget that thay had Bad light wepenry ( machin guns .. Rifles ..pistoles ) even so that thay

@@user-rl8hf8kt1r Their airforce was really only worse because of lack of resources and having a lot of industry be destroyed. Also Japanese tanks had good cannons however their armour was worthless since it was quite thin all around or just wasn't good enough. They were designed to be able to easily transported for naval invasions.

Ah Operation August Storm. It should be remembered like Operation Babarosa (sorry if misspelled) which is when Axis attacks in the USSR in 1941.
Can you even imagine Operation Downfall? Nearly every major military power on earth would have converged on Japan's home islands. The scale and violence would have been unthinkable.

@@KangaKucha The atomic bombs were honestly the MERCIFUL option from everything I've seen. They killed tens of thousands, but the Operation Downfall invasion might have resulted in TEN MILLION casualties. There were no good options. It's probably one of the most horrible decisions any US President has ever had to make.
Thank you for covering this operation! My grandfather was a lieutenant in the artillery units of the Red Army on this front as he was transferred from Karelia when Finland singed peace treaty in 1944 and now had to fight German forces in Lapland. It's quite interesting that the forces built up was gradual and started from early 1945. My grandfather father haven't talked much about the war, but from what my parents told he and several of his men were severely sick and some died as they drank from a water well that the Japanese soldiers had poisoned - cases like this were very common. As my dad told me, grandad never took part in victory day parades and did not go to veteran meetings and always kept his campaign medals stashed away. Most of his combat history we found out in an official file which we request ed from the military of defense archives,
only after his death.

Thank you for mentioning Mongolian war effort. Mongolian people’s army sent almost it’s all power to battle Japanese. Even the numbers were small those people fought well.
Vasylevsky is a quite underrated general of WW2. And this whole offensive in general is a very underrated in historical sense as it was a very large contributor of Japan's surrender, not just the two atomic bombs.
I would have Vasilevsky up with Zhukov and Rokossovsky as the best generals of the war. No one did pure logistics better than him.

Everyone wants to say it was the atomic bombs when they were just one factor. The US airforce burnt down central Tokyo in one night of napalm bombing in March of '45. Killing about the same as Hiroshima. And then, here come the soviets.
One of the most important events of WW2 that is really overlooked
It led to the creation of the DPRK (and the division of Korea) and Mao's victory in the chinese civil war, leading to the creation of the PRC
The moment the soviets stepped into Manchuria the future of east Asia for the next 70 years (at least) was settled
And remember, Stalin set up North Korea without any free elections, the "Democratic People's Republic" was NEVER appointed by the people.

Even more overlooked, was the fact that Stalin actually turned Manchuria over to Chiang Kai Shek in 47, but not before passing on all captured Japanese hardware to the Chinese Communist Party and Kim Il Sung.
My uncle was stationed in Manchuria as a young lieutenant. Two weeks before the Soviets attacked, he was recalled to Tokyo as he spoke fairly decent English . The upper command had correctly predicted that his linguistic abilities may be needed there very soon. His fate would have been very different otherwise.
And then you wouldn't exist...

the battle of khalkin gol was a decisive defeat for Japan and is largely considered (by russian historians) to be a reason Japan decided to turn its attention to expanding southwards against allies, seeing that there will be no easy victory against USSR on land
Japan only used 20,000 soldiers at Khalkhin Gol and the Japanese were outnumbered 4-1 by the Soviets at Khalkhin Gol and that was in 1939, in 1941 Japan was planning an invasion of the eastern USSR called Operation Kantokuen and it was going to be the largest land invasion in Japanese history but because of the fuel and oil blockade on Japan and the rising threat of the great sleeping giant known as the United States Japan was forced to divert their attention to the US and the Pacific, and if it wasnt for the US then Japan would have crushed the USSR from the east while the USSR gest crushed from the west by Germany because even in Europe if it wasnt for the US Lend Lease supplies then Germany would have steamrolled the USSR but thanks to the US that didnt happen, the US is the one that did most of the work to defeat the Japanese empire the USSR had little to no involvement in the Pacific, the US did even more in Europe than the USSR in the Pacific

Those soldiers were a private military of the "northern faction" of the japanese military which was tied to the medieval samurai clans. Creme le crope. Also there were 60000 japs under their command but front got annihilated too fast for all of them to get involved. The northerners wanted to take sparsely populated Siberia, since japan was struggling in China, even though Chai Kai Shek being retarded.
And those northerners were a staunch opposition of the Tosa clan which controlled the naval and air forces.
Thus they tried to instigate the war between USSR and Japan and were humiliated. It led to Tosa getting control over all the military. Tosa wanted to expand towards European colonies of the south-east Asia.

And no, without Lend Lease, the Soviets would not be able to launch counter offensives as much as they were able to, nor would they be able to push Germany back beyond Poland and Kiev.
One thing that was inaccurately depicted was, the lunge mine. The lunge mine could NOT penetrate soviet or american armor, it could only damage the vehicle, but even that was not enough to destroy vehicles, you had to use several lunge mines to destroy one vehicle.
I didn't know about that, but what got me was when they said Theodore instead of Franklin Roosevelt. (5:57) Mistakes happen, still loved it.

The second sino Japanese war was arguably as chaotic and interesting as the eastern front. The sheer amount of things Chiang Kai shek had to deal with ( the communists, the Japanese invasions, the loss of their capitals, rampant corruption, a famine, and the many warlords/cliques) was insane. I hope you can do more videos on China as there is a lot of unpack when looking at it.
China is where some historians believe the Second World War began, not in Poland on September 1, 1939.

Chiang Kai-shek is a massive L in historical regard. Before, during and after the war, he is known notoriously for white terror which puts Mao to shame in the regard. Heavy taxation and corruption formed the mention famine, and creating massive wealth gaps, even to a stage where the Americans stepped in. Intentionally collapsing the dam of Huayuankou, spending money sent by overseas Chinese for personal enjoyments etc. In 1945 where the Allies were steamrolling in every theater, he managed to lose a few thousand kilometers of frontline on what was probably the worst allied offensive in the late-war.
A film made regarding this was released a few years back, im not sure if it is available on youtube or netflix - 1942, quite a good one, and was not politically biased - the Communists played an insignificant role in the film. The situation in Henan was so dire, due to the taxation, forced conscription and corruption, that people believed going under Japanese occupation was more acceptable. Chiang is indeed an enemy of the Chinese race.

The USSR only declared war on Germany, because they were invaded by them. The USSR didn’t wanted war with Germany for the foreseeable future.

"Soviet Storm" is the best Russian ww2 series ever. All 50 min episodes.
You're not learning much in 15 min no matter how well put together it is.
One result of this victory not often discussed: the Soviet win basically handed Manchuria to the communists in the soon-to-resume Chinese Civil War, making their eventual victory over the KMT that much easier.
And the creation of North Korea soon to invade South which started Korean war
A lot of Japanese equipment was given to the Communists who were originally poorly equipped compared to their American sponsored counterparts.
@@death2641 *invaded the south preemptively when the south was putting down union worker uprisings and blaming the communists.
Not just Manchuria but also the captured weapons and ammo of the Kwantung Army... A major factor in Mao's subsequent victory. Given that USA essentially joined the World War 2 (by embargoing exports to Japan thus largely provoking its attack) in order to maintain its influence in China, one could argue that it ultimately failed in its war aim (but expanded its sphere of influence in Europe).

you should use the direct sources he links in the description instead of the video itself. this is sort of like sourcing another college research paper for your research paper at best.

Malinovsky took wolf hole in Prussia with half soldiers than defenders had. For months he traded small shtoorm groups.
It is strange that people do not talk about this, but when Soviets crushed German attack, they moved a lot army in the far east and destroyed japanese armies there, they were shocked. Soviets even captured the last chinese emperor.
the Soviets hardly did anything against Japan in comparison to the other countries, the Soviets only won against Germany thanks to the allies opening up other fronts in Western Europe, Italy, and North Africa, and thanks to the American made weapons provided to the USSR through Lend Lease, the USSR was only responsible for a little over 1% of all Japanese casualties which is very minimal

It is more likely that they would find the Japanese resistance shocking because it was at the point of suicidal, the Japanese stood no chance at victory whatsoever.

I am Chinese born in one of the 3 mordern Chinese Northeast provinces formerly known as Manchuria. Soviets helped us liberate our land which is why even after the cold war disagreements and border clashes, Chinese and Russians always were more aliened since we knew they helped us even though they annexed some parts of outer mongolia (republic of tuva and republic of buryats) when Qing dynasty collapsed

By 1945 the 3 most terrifying things in the world were: Nuclear bombs, The Soviet Red Army, and the American Navy.
Don't forget both the RAF and USAAF also. Hands down the greatest air forces humanity had yet seen by the last days of the war.
You should call it the "Allied" navy as British Royal Navy is still a force to be reckon with. Especially in the Indian Ocean where the largest naval battle prior to Leyte Gulf, The Battle of Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka), was fought.
@@johncarter4956 Yes but at that point I also should have said "Allied" Army. As the American and British Armies were also forces to be reckoned with. The US had more of a Naval monopoly than even the Soviets had a ground force monopoly.
This isn't to bash the Royal Navy either. They were great, and up until WW2 they were ahead of the USN. But the USN simply grew too much for anyone to compete with by 1945.

My great grandfather was a soldier who traversed the Second World War from 1941 to 1945. After the end of the war in the west he was dislocated and attacked Manchuria from Mongolia. For that exploit he got victory over Japan medal and the order of the Red Star.

This is a pretty strange approach. How can you not mention Khalkin Gol in 1939 where Soviet victory led by Zhukov (and his fellow commanders Smushkevich and Shtern) was a direct path to Zhukov's appointment to chief of staff in February 1, 1941 (Vasilevsky, BTW, was head of the Operations Directorate at this time with Vatutin as his deputy). That victory in 1939 was also the main reason Japan never engaged again with the USSR until the Manchurian Strategic Operation in 1945.

Because what he doesn't say is that one of factors contributing to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was that the outcome in the Far East was still unknown. Because the direction of the entire war was influenced by Khalkin Gol. Saying there is no relation ... you might as well say there us no relation to WW2.

It determined Japanese policy towards the USSR and it meant that Japan considered expansion toward the North infeasible. That was a factor in the decision to attack the US. There is a direct chain connecting Khalkin Gol. The connection I would say is at least as important, if not more than trying to connect the offensive to "revenge for 1905".

It is a damn impressive military feat. For perspective compared to the blitzkrieg of France; this is basically capturing twice the land area of ALL of France; in half the time, in an area with minimal infrastructure, against a seasoned army of near equal force numbers, with an army half the size.

The Japanese were outnumbered almost 2 to 1 in this. And the Japanese army was depleted, most of it's best troops and equipment had been siphoned off to fight the Americans and Chinese.

In WWII; it was generally thought that an attacking force required about a 3:1 advantage in manpower to accomplish the combat goal. The 2:1 listed here (1.5 million vs ~750k+) would put the numerical advantage to the defender. And I totally agree that the Japanese army was depleted; as was the Guard's Battalions that attacked. The Soviet population lost 25% of their fighting age population in WWII; I doubt that meant the cream of the army was doing the attacking; and I doubt the training the Soviets were giving their conscripts was much more than the training of the Kwantung. The Soviet did have much better equipment due to lend lease, and much better experience; due to the Wehrmacht. I'm not trying to prop up the Soviets or idolize them, just point out that even with the factors; I think it is still very impressive.

Still German invasion overall was more impressive,French Army in May 1940 was still more advanced and much larger than Japanese Army in Manchuria.
And don’t forget that Soviets outnumbered Japanese almost 10 to 1 in number of tanks in the area.

The Soviets really crushed the Kwantung Army brutally. The Japanese army didnt know what hit them.
To be fair the Soviets attacked a terribly equipped, untrained, unprepared, starving force of soldiers who were the exact opposite of an elite corps. 500,000 men surrendered to the Russians forces, compared to the battle hardened Japanese troops that were fighting all over the Pacific.

The Japanese government had been actively encouraging Japanese nationals to settle in Manchuria since setting up the Manchukuo puppet state in the early 30s, and the fate of those settlers after the Soviet invasion was very tragic. Many abandoned settlers’ orphans perished and some only managed to get repatriated to Japan in the 80s / 90s.

This is false, despite what Mao did after his rule, in military command he have a strict policy of taking care of POWs as much as he can in Korean War and during Civil War.
Which is one of his main tactic to cause mass defections in the KMT. He even spared and rehabilitated Puyi and defeated a Hui Muslim Uprising incited by the Ma Clique Clan by causing the leaders to deflect and turn against one another then ended up swearing loyalty to the PRC.
Stalin on the other hand, has a track of sheer calculative brutality. While Mao is not a saint, he is more pragmatic and manipulative.

It was fascinating to see this engagement was much more interesting then other accounts had lead me to believe.
at 6:12 there is a Map showing the eastern railway Network of the USSR, the map shows the trans Siberia railway in red but also the B.A.M. railway in green just above the trans siberian, the B.A.M. wasnt built until the 1970s under Brezhnev so i'd be quite surprised if Soviet leaders were planning such a railway in 1945 but its an interesting thing that i took note of.
It could also just be an error on the part of the animators who might have used modern Maps as reference.

It's not a great quote in my opinion. Stalin's purges often went too far he isn't the sole actor or perpetrator in them. Nikolai Yezhov head of the NKVD for example admitted to unfounded arrests and was largely responsible for the reign of terror. Some purges were necessary with the fifth column, a fascist reactionary group operating in the USSR but Stalin's paranoia and being surrounded by people like Yezhov meant things got out of hand with disastrous consequences. I digress but competency was never Stalin's problem with people if it was the USSR wouldn't have been the second fastest growing economy in history or go from war-torn feudalist backwater to global superpower in less than 25 years.

The Japanese would have gobbled up their whole force on inbound. By the end of the war in the Pacific, the Japanese were experts at amphibious defense and their Navy, while only a shadow of its former self, was still held in check by AMERICA'S navy. The idea of Japanese sailors and infantrymen quaking in their boots is clearly some sort of Russian propaganda.
The Japanese of 1945 were not the Japanese of 1904. They were BETTER.

Japanese conditions for surrender were that the Emperor should stay in his position, anything else was secondary, and this was accepted by the US after the bombs were dropped. The Korean peninsula only split because when the US suggested Red Army troops only occupy half Stalin surprised them by agreeing and withdrawal to the 38th parallel followed.
Imagine if they hadn't settled for only half of Korea. All of that peninsula would be under the monstrous Kim dynasty today.

Keep in mind Japan sued for peace months before the atomic bombs with these same exact conditions. Nearly every US General and Admiral believed the atomic bombs to be unnecessary, as Japan had already lost the moment they lost air and naval superiority, and not to mention barbaric.
America declined this peace and accepted it AFTER showing off their new toy to the world. Burning innocent children, elders, and women with a fiery ball of atomic flame should not be supported in any circumstance. Its insane to me people still defend this as the only way and try to justify it.

The reason Japanese tanks sucked so much was because they weren't designed for anti-tank warfare. They were designed to be strictly anti-infantry since they were designed to fight China and China had no tanks, only slow, weak and cumbersome field guns and napoleonic-era cannons. Against China they were terrifyingly effective.
But when faced up against industrialised powers fielding their own tanks designed to kill other tanks, Japanese tanks just didn't stand a chance
Well they have a lot of plans for making much better tank models but unluckily all of the resources were used for making ships

Many of Grandad's generation (ww2 veterans) were so badly affected by how the Imperial Japanese treated their adversaries, in particular POWs, that even upto the 1980s they point blank refused to purchase Japanese vehicles or electrical goods, both of which boomed in postwar Western Europe.
I remember him point blank refusing to rent a Vega television set once he found out the company had been purchased by Sony...

It really isn't that far fetched when you realize that there are few concentrated supply centers. Even if the total area is wide, most strategic and tactical locations are in predictable places.
it's strange that you call the soviets "Russians" and the soviet union "Russia". It was comprised of Russians, yes, but a good half of the inhabitants of the soviet union weren't actually Russian.
I would expect someone older to do that; during the Cold War "Russia" and "USSR" were pretty much interchangeable. But he's a young guy who learned this stuff after the Soviets fell apart and those national differences mattered again.
