Great video to explain the game, nothing like this out there yet! To comment on the demo game: I thought this was a sure win for the Muna player until they played a card from hand over Meditation Training from reserve. It seemed like a game losing mistake, since Muna looks like a faction that uses "tempo" to outvalue opponents. The Sneezer losing its tokens is a big tempo loss, and I don't see the gain from playing a character from hand over securing a reserve card. Correct me if I'm wrong, but reserve cards are the only cards an opponent has some control over given the current set of keywords. Additionally, committing (hand) characters to expeditions also reduces flexibility, and gives the opponent opportunity to respond, so all-in-all it seemed like a losing play either way. Anyway, this game has quite a few fresh mechanics that make it stand out from typical "battle" tcg; it looks very accessible with quite a bit of "hidden" depth.
Very astute thoughts! You caught the most important "suboptimal" play - that would have certainly changed the game. I think you are generally right (and scripted it as such), but one reason a player might choose to delay using the Meditation from reserve is to avoid going "all in" on the Shroom if they are trying to play around particular removal for it. Going with the Druid first allows them to respond more flexibly if the opponent chooses to play out their interaction on the shroom in the next action! The game absolutely has a lot of hidden depth, and putting in plays like this opens up conversations for players interested in finding it. Thanks for the kind words and hope you check the game out when it launches!
This game seems like one where the "correct" line and ability to know your opponents deck (because there will very clearly be a best deck) is extremely easy to calculate. There is far less guesswork.

In the Tie Breaker round, you sum the stats on both sides into a single comparison. So if you have 5/1/3 in Hero, and 4/4/4 in Companion, your stats for the Tiebreaker round are 9/5/7. If that causes you to win more stat types than your opponent, you will win the game - otherwise, if you continue to tie, you will play additional Tiebreaker rounds until one player wins.
@@MaindeckGames I suppose to answer my question since I don't fully understand, can you play in 1 expedition zone Hero for example instead of both zones and still be declared the winner by having higher statistics?
Sure, if you ONLY play in one expedition, your total stats will be the stats of that expedition (say Hero), plus 0/0/0 because you didn't then didn't play in companion. Your opponent can put all their characters in Companion, and get a similar result - and at the end, you'll just compare both total sets of stats to see who wins more of them. So with that in mind, in MANY circumstances it won't matter which you play in, but it CAN matter - for example, characters with Gigantic will count their stats in both expeditions still, so the regular Atlas will still add 3/3/3 to BOTH expeditions in the Tiebreaker round - which ends up being 6/6/6 total when the two sides are summed up.
The only thing i might be afraid of is that a unique card might still be too good at some point in a deck build around it. On one hand i love the whole "its entirely unique card" But the collector in me also cries a little 😢

So... this is really a board game concept that they tried to monetize as a TCG. There isn't much of a rock/paper/scissors format as there will be a race format. Every game fails to catch the key that made MTG a great game - you can attack your opponent from multiple angles and since there are so many avenues to victory it comes down to understanding the competitive environment more than just playing "the deck". There were periods of magic dominated by a singular deck but rarely did a deck manage a metagame threshold of 40% or greater. You could design counter strategies to the "best" strategies. Very very cool TCG. I can't wait to look at it! I have a little question, if someone knows! During the cleanup step, if both players have to many cards in their reserve, who should send some cards to the discard pile first? The one with the first turn token? Because based on what your opponent is sending to the discard pile, you may want to send specific cards to your discard pile - is there a rule to prevent players from waiting each other to start discarding?
You know, I never really thought about any card games as being violent before you mentioned it here. It's just a pile of game mechanics. But yeah, I guess I can't actually think of a single TCG/CCG where your not either attacking your opponent, and/or creatures/characters to some degree. I got to demo the game today, and I enjoyed it. I'll probably be buying a couple starters, and booster packs when the game releases. I got a nice textless promo for playing the demo.
Quick question. If a player passes and then their opponent plays a card, can the player who passed make another move in reply or are they "locked into" their pass? Thanks for the guide, extremely helpful and really looking forward to the game. Backed on Kickstarter already!
No problem! Passing is "hard" in Altered - once you Pass, you are done for the day no matter what else happens. Happy to help, let me know if you have any other questions!
@@MaindeckGames brilliant, thanks for the reply! I thought the same but Board Game Arena let another player pass, I played a card and then my opponent played a card after that. As if both players had to pass consecutively to end the turn. I watched your tutorial and thought it was a "hard" pass too. Must just be a bug with Board Game Arena so. Thanks again!
@@ciaranryan6128Yeah that's interesting, that definitely shouldn't be the case! I'll have to check in with the team and see if it's a known issue. Thanks for mentioning it!
The space each player's token is on only determines which stats they are able to advance by winning. You still must compare Hero to Hero, and Companion to Companion, no matter which spaces on the board they are standing on.
The KS product is available worldwide in either English or French. Italian, German, and Spanish are planned to join at retail launch in August, with USA, EU, Canada, and Chile locked in so far and potentially more to come.
@@MaindeckGameshey Dan, are they taking it down from BGA after the 5th or will it just no longer be free? I’ve had a ton of fun playing the starter decks on BGA and I still supported the KS, but would hate to see the game leave and I was planning on using the platform to teach some friends.
The plan is to pull it down, but then take a look at stats/feedback and re-evaluate. I agree, I hope it stays up so we'll see how they plan to do that! I've been impressed with their decisions in general so I'm hoping they'll make a good one when that week is up.
I heard the multiplayer version is a team variant played 2 vs 2. That’s really a bummer for me because I really hoped a game without knocking out opponents would have a multiplayer variant for any number of players that are playing individually. I don’t get why every tcg is so focused on 1 vs 1 competitive gaming when there is really a place for a truly multiplayer focused tcg
Questions: 1. Do all cards that are played from reserve gain fleeting upon entering an expedition zone? 2. How does the stack work in this game? EDIT: I found the answer to my first question. All cards EXCEPT permanents played from reserve gain fleeting. And I thought of another question: 3. Can a card be both fleeting and anchored? If so, what happens to the card at the end of the day?
The only reason why this game will most likely fail is that it includes a bit too many things in a single game, too complex for its own good. You can say it is not, and there may be a time in which you play it naturally but to get there might not he that easy. It is not modern day Yugioh complicated but Yugioh is here now because it started out really simple and got more advanced as time went on. This game is complicated from the start and this is the issue.
I think its problem mainly stems from lack of familiarity since it is so different from other popular TCGs. I think Keyforge is an example of how to stick closer to what people know, but still change something fundamental. The win condition in Keyforge interested me since it opens up a large number of strategies to that goal. An example of a very different TCG (which is no longer officially supported) is Android: Netrunner. It's probably the greatest card game I've ever played, but it differs greatly from the popular TCGs, since it doesn't look anything like them. Seriously, you owe it to yourself to play Netrunner if you haven't.
We opened two starters tonight, glanced at the rules for a minute and played a game. It’s really not complicated at all. I think Star Wars Unlimited and Magic are much more complicated with their timing and wording.
Are they really gonna put that Big ugly QR code thing on the front of every card? I understand the function of it and it will be interesting to see how that plays out, but man does it ruin the overall aesthetic value of the card...
Most players report that after a game or two, they no longer notice the QR code when looking at cards. The code being on the front is critical as well - it is used to allow for fast deck checking in events, to allow you to read an opponent's card in your native language (which is important because of the Unique cards in the game that might not be in your language), and to immediately inform new buyers about the digital aspects of the game. That said, the team will be looking over time to find ways to minimize it as technology improves, but they tested many iterations and found the simple black and white QR code to be the fastest and most effective for scanning, which they prioritized to reduce any burden for players.
The QR code is also the thing I dislike the most about this otherwise gorgeous game. But it do seem like it has real substance, not just gimmicks, so I really look forward to trying it out
I backed this in KS today its almost at 1 mil so few things 1: people are very excited for this game definitely seems very new and innovative fresh love 2: none cares that much about the qr code or there wouldn't be 1 mil backed Ina day 3: great excellent video my friend very well done on each break down from beginning to end 4: content for this game is gonna be off the charts can't wait to play this 😊
There are so many ways to make a QR code look good, with different shapes and colours. It’s sad they just went with the default ones, instead of making it fit the look of the cards

@@MaindeckGames Fair play, thank you!
Its cool how mtg mechanics are being used in almost all tcgs
This has me interested in the game, but ive got several tcg with no one to play with.
do the action cards have to be played before anything else in a turn?
Quick actions (Exhaust and Support abilities on cards in reserve) are used before you Play a Card or Pass, always - yes!
Your channel really is da best
Thank you so much, I'm glad I can be helpful to people!
16:50 Why are stats compared since they are each on their own area. Doesn't make sense to me.
The space each player's token is on only determines which stats they are able to advance by winning. You still must compare Hero to Hero, and Companion to Companion, no matter which spaces on the board they are standing on.
The text of nevanka& blotch ends with ".. remove it when it"??
That was just an error in the image they sent me - the corrected card image is in the card library at Altered.gg!
Hello, how long does a game last ? From what i'm seeing looks like it's kind of short no ?
15-20 minutes is pretty typical. The demo shown is on the faster side, but the average game is similar to many other TCGs.
when will this come out in europe? sorry this is my first look at these
The KS product is available worldwide in either English or French. Italian, German, and Spanish are planned to join at retail launch in August, with USA, EU, Canada, and Chile locked in so far and potentially more to come.
Great presentation ! 😃 Thank you, it's going to help a lot of people discorvering Altered.
And that ExAltered's music... ❤
This sounds great!!!!!!
Will there be a digital learn to play or a online version
Play right now at Board Game Arena (available through Feb 5th):

@@MaindeckGameshey Dan, are they taking it down from BGA after the 5th or will it just no longer be free?
I’ve had a ton of fun playing the starter decks on BGA and I still supported the KS, but would hate to see the game leave and I was planning on using the platform to teach some friends.
The plan is to pull it down, but then take a look at stats/feedback and re-evaluate. I agree, I hope it stays up so we'll see how they plan to do that! I've been impressed with their decisions in general so I'm hoping they'll make a good one when that week is up.
Missed opportunity to not put the set symbol in the center of the qr code.
Played Muna first today took awhile but was fun
Great video Dan! Hi from Rome!
Thank you Giulia! Glad you made it back safely - it was great to hang with you last weekend!

Seems mechanically sound and looks like it brings something unique to the tcg space. Seems like it would do well.
It's a ton of fun for sure. Great game with a lot of depth once you dig in!
Excellent.
I am really looking forward to trying the multiplayer version!
As I understand, the 2v2 variant is the furthest along. I've heard of others being worked on as well, so don't lose hope :)
there will be a free for all version too i think its 4 players
Questions:
1. Do all cards that are played from reserve gain fleeting upon entering an expedition zone?
2. How does the stack work in this game?
EDIT: I found the answer to my first question. All cards EXCEPT permanents played from reserve gain fleeting. And I thought of another question:
Who are the artists of this game?
I'm not sure there's a handy list of *every* artist, but you'll find the artists credited on each card here:
www.altered.gg/en-us/cards
Odd, they appear to use a lot of terminology from Legends of Runeterra.
But it do seem like it has real substance, not just gimmicks, so I really look forward to trying it out
Who cares of the qr??? It has HUUUGE functions… brilliant system… can’t wait to play live!
I backed this in KS today its almost at 1 mil so few things
1: people are very excited for this game definitely seems very new and innovative fresh love
2: none cares that much about the qr code or there wouldn't be 1 mil backed Ina day
3: great excellent video my friend very well done on each break down from beginning to end
4: content for this game is gonna be off the charts can't wait to play this 😊
A color QR matched to faction color would look so much nicer
I'm not a fan of the very visible QR codes, but all in all the game looks pretty interesting.
They almost entirely disappear for most people once they start playing with the cards. I totally forget they are even there!
There are so many ways to make a QR code look good, with different shapes and colours. It’s sad they just went with the default ones, instead of making it fit the look of the cards
I was sold until the Unique card part.
Yeah I guess this game isn't made to be focused on competitive side and that's okay.
I wish the QR code wasn't on the card, it looks so ugly with it in the bottom corner..
the art on each card is so big I think it offsets it
no battle is BORING. But i might as well try it to see if it's really boring or what.
Yeah, we're seeing a lot of "strategies we've never seen before" lately... also, what does inclusion mean in terms of a tcg?
I died of puns
The QR code kills it for me
