Good video, but there a couple of really important things you forgot:
- There was a large number of American college students on the island, and the U.S Government was concerned that they would be held hostage.
- Two days before the invasion, the Beirut Barracks bombing occurred, ending U.S involvement in the Lebanese Civil War, meaning that Reagan was free to focus on the Grenada Problem, which he couldn't before due to Lebanon.
- The invasion had major logistical problems as the U.S rangers did not have the proper maps.
The first thing you mentioned is debatable, according to most Grenadians that I know.
According to a number of students ive met who were there, they were under no harm or held hostage....utter bs
I agree that the facts of the first comment is debatable. One of our guides told us the same thing, but he happened to be a Communist sympathizer, who flat out changed the entire history of the invasion. He changed dates and sequence of events, so I don't believe a word he said. But I question the American student comment all together. I have a difficult time believing there would be American students in a Communist country during the Cold War.

+Junior...Is this true though? Was there hundreds of Cuban troops on the Island? I've seen elsewhere that there from NONE to a few dozen Cuban workers (for the airport) who took up arms. My research tells me there wasn't a professional military of any size on the Island
@@disco1974ever There were Cuban troops there, they were helping to build the airport. During the Grenadian revolution Cuba contributed about 500 Cuban airport workers, advisors on every aspect of society, culture and technology, doctors etc. They trained many Grenadians to be doctors too & helped to improve the island's education system as a whole. There was no real military in Grenada at the time, or military weapons, Cuba provided a small amount of (out dated) weapons. This all made the US paranoid because of the Cold War, so they pretended there were American students being held hostage so they could get coked up & fly a helicopter into some mountains before destroying homes & killing a load of people. Everyone I have ever asked (& I know a few people who were there) has said that the "official" story that is usually told is mostly false.

Then someone has to explain you the function and the powers of the UN first, because you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.
The UN is mostly about diplomacy, preventive diplomacy being it's main goal. Thanks to the forum the UN is, many conflicts have been prevented. It's when the UN fails that war breaks out. Not the other way around...
In some trouble spots, the mere presence of a skilled envoy can prevent the escalation of tension. These envoys often cooperate with regional organizations.
But even when war breaks out, UN actions have been crucial to stop or prevent further bloodshed. Such as the genocide in Yugoslavia, where the UN asked NATO to intervene.
Many conflicts ended, either through direct UN mediation, or through the efforts of others acting with UN support. Countries assisted included El Salvador, Guatemala, Namibia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Tajikistan, and Burundi. In the late nineties, continuing crises led to new operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Timor Leste, Sierra Leone and Kosovo.
In the new millennium, peacekeepers have been deployed to Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, Sudan, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali.
Today's conflicts are less numerous but deeply rooted. For example, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Darfur, and South Sudan today, are in a second or third wave of conflict. And many are complicated by regional dimensions that are key to their solution. In fact, some two-thirds of peacekeeping personnel today are deployed amid ongoing conflict, where peace agreements are shaky or absent. Conflicts today are also increasingly intensive, involving determined armed groups with access to sophisticated armaments and techniques.
We can also thank the UN for it's work to ensure that outer space is used for peaceful purposes and that the benefits from space activities are shared by all nations.

Coard placed Bishop under house arrest after Bishop visited the Reagan administration in Washington DC and Castro in Havana. Read what you will into that...
Bishop was freed mostly by uniformed secondary students.
The central committee ordered army loyalist to attack and kill Bishop and his followers in St George's. To this date the number of people who died is not published.
Coard was not releaved of his command/control of the central committee. I remember the radio anouncement - and at no point was this brought up.
It was clear that if the Americans did not invade that there was probably going to be a civil war as the army was split in support for and against the decisions of the central committee. The island was very very tense. Many people were making final arrangements
There would not have been any civil war if America left Grenada alone! They didn't want any third would country to become self reliant so they infiltrate peoples country and start turning them against each other and when thats not enough they assassinate them.
As a matter of a fact what they did to Bishop was illegal! Just to let you know this was not sanctioned by CARICOM OR ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE OECS. PLUS THEY DID NOT EVEN GET A LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR GENERAL TO INTERVENE.

The GG of Grenada was hardly in a place to write a letter, let alone freely communicate with the outside world. He was essentially a prisoner on the island just like everyone else during the curfew. The OECS was essentially scared of Grenada. Trinidad had lots of scares of Grenada invading them - all of hoaxes.
Maybe a civil war is too broad a term. There certainly would have been fighting. I have spoken to many past members of the PRA and many members of the militia post invasion - they were angry about Bishop's assassination - there would have been some armed insurection.

I do not subscribe to Communism - I am a social democrat - that being said - Grenada saw huge economic and social development during the communist era. The good.
To this date Grenada has not come to terms with the loss/sacrifice we suffered/made on October 19th (the date Maurice Bishop was assassinated along with innocent school children). The bad. There is no official list. We don't know their final resting place(s).
There is a lot more good and bad. For me. This would be a start.
There are also some other mysteries - such as prior to October 19th 1983 - why did Bishop go to the USA? What was discussed with the Reagan administration? Why did Bishop stop off in Havana before going back to Grenada? What did Bishop discuss with Castro? Why was Bishop called a traitor and arrested when he landed in Grenada?

To everyone complainign in the comments: most Grenadians are actually thankful that the US saved them from falling under a communist dictatorship. In fact, the day the invasion started is now a national holiday in Grenada.

Majd Aasee Iraq got screwed over because Obama pulled all the troops out once it had gotten to a more stable condition, against all general advisers, however for a short time Iraq enjoyed an almost full fledged democracy. Vietnam was a bad call. North Vietnam was working on accepting defeat whenever word got out that America was pulling out do to social unrest so they just waited them out and won. However for many years the south Vietnamese enjoyed a lot of freedom for a country that was completely war torn before America, and would later go on and make some capitalistic reforms about ten years later and is verging capitalism today and more democratic ideology. Meaning the Americans went to defend south from the retarded north who'd later go on to want to be the south, a.k.a the north resulted in thousands of deaths. And I can't speak for Libya, have no clue what happened there.

Running US soldiers lack magazines for their rifles. Incidentally, famous the Reagan Cowboy Hat picture was from a day riding in the hot sun on horse back, were a cowboy hat might logically be worn. Other wise, nice job.
They are 2 strange things to pick out. I mean Reagan probably never studied a huge map of Grenada on a desk and Pinochet would have appeared from thin air in full uniform to salute Gairy. So the fact you picked out the cowboy hat confuses me.
Plus, I would like to point out 1 soldier has a magazine, but more to the point, why did you skip the rifles at 0:21?
And here's a few more mistakes - the planes use an air france logo, Trinidad never sits next to Colombia, Cuban Uniforms change in the space of 5 seconds, none of these people seem to have ears in profile etc. etc.

This is a moving and actually rather beautiful piece of animated art. Can you please produce an accompanying piece describing your artistic process? Do you, for example, use a "posterization" filter that reduces documentary photographs into a simple composite a few shapes or color fields, then smooth the resulting polygons into more basic contours to resemble illustrations, or do you rather manually draw all the portraits of political figures? Great work, well chosen minimalist soundtrack, appropriate narration style.

The invasion of Grenada was actually one of the few good calls by the US. Civilian losses were minor (had the regime remained in power, the purges would have led to more deaths) and the objective was met. The people of Grenada welcomed the liberators.
Nguyên Hoàng a lot of people don’t realize for all the bad the US has done its more good that more than makes up for it. Granada is and example of what the US strives for. It liberated a country saved us citizens and left a peaceful prospering country.

I spent 2 years in Grenada (pronounced "Gren-AY-da") in the 1980s, and I feel that the 'Intervention' was justified. Prior to the intervention, the socialist government (backed by Fidel Castro) armed young men, including teenagers, with a variety of weapons. Cocky, uneducated young men walked around like a bunch of thugs. Then there was a coup, and the nation's leaders were executed by firing squads. Hardworking Grenadians were at the mercy of this group. Sure, the USA was not welcomed by some, especially the young men who had grown up thinking they'd have careers in the military, which was mostly disbanded. Some Grenadians were very glad to have countries intervene to try to get things back to normal. The situation was much more complicated than it might seem. The murderers of the president have been released from jail. It must be strange for some people, having these people living free on their island.

Why did the US invade Grenada? First it had nothing to do with the US students though that is the reason that was given. The US invaded Grenada because of the lengthening of the runway. It was originally too short for the Russian Tupolev TU-95 bomber which carries nuclear weapons and cruise missiles. That is one of the planes that is constantly flying near Alaska. It has also flown within 50 miles of California. The US could not allow missiles in Cuba nor Russian bombers in Grenada.
The British government proposed the airport in 1954 when Grenada was still a British colony. It wasn't build for Russian bombers, it was build to bring tourism to the island. Ironically, America helped fund it's completion after the invasion.
@@2high83 I didn't write that Russia and Cuba were building an airport, I wrote that they were lengthening the runways. The reason being that the runways were too short, the Russian Tupolev TU-95 bomber needs a longer runway to take off on.

Patrick O'Neil filibusters were also private wars where Americans tried to, and occasionally successfully, invaded nations in Latin America, with the goal of either establishing their own little country or annexing it to the US.
Texas is often seen as the prime example but given it was heavily populated by legal migrants who eventually wanted independence it's not quite the same as some outright invasions

Illegal? The regional security organization asked for help from the US to deal with the growing problem in Grenada. This wasn't a unilateral operation. In fact, I was on one of the ships heading towards Grenada when we heard the S.O.S. put out by Grenada so this wasn't even a surprise operation. Nice try though, maybe next time you leave emotions out of your statement and look at all the facts first.

Bigger army diplomacy
As far as US interventions go, this one seems... alright, I guess. Invited to intervene by a supranational organization representing the region (and including Grenada as a member) and the Governor-General (albeit secretly) in an environment where the Prime Minister (revolutionary or not) had been murdered. Regardless of what Reagan may have been planning to do, how it played out is better than most of the cold-war era interventions. If the African Union asks for assistance putting down a civil war in, say, Mali, I'd think there would be at least some reasonable basis for the action. So many of the opinions here are all or nothing.
