Kenya's situation is better compared to most African countries. The Kenyans claiming to be homeless are ignorant because they all have a rural home but instead prefer living in the city without employment.
In Africa we have large countryside where you can build a hut and grow your own food like most villagers do . But people choose to move to city where the resources are scarce and end up living in a slum or on the street.
@ Well, living in a hut is much better and more dignified than staying on the street in a city . In fact, Africans who live in villages are far happier than those in the town. They have large swathes of land for themselves where they can raise livestock and cultivate and also fish.
Actually you don't have to live in a hut, you can build a decent house.. Off-grid living while you grow your own food, use solar power and pump your own water is becoming a very big trend in Kenya.
There's no housing crisis in kenya , all this people leave their rural homes acres on end of idle land because they dont want to do hard work and move to the capital where there's a crisis of employment thus they end up in the slums. This are just poor millionaires. Change the mindset and stop looking for white collars jobs.
Every big city in the World has the same, but in African countries, it's worse because Rural areas have no development at all. Now, with global warming, they can't even make money from subsistence farming.

Free Government Housing is not the only solution. South Africa has built about 4 Million Free housing units for the people, but there are still homeless people in every city. Having a house and no means of sustaining it is what brings people to urban areas to look for work because there are no economies in rural areas. With the weather changes many who lived from small farming can't do that anymore.
I hope you know this whole story is based on less than 2 thousand people. Where they had houses that were illegally built near a river when it flood and people died the government demolished the houses. 99.99 percent of people in kenya have a rural home. There are millions of vacant houses all over kenya. They are unoccupied because people who would love to occupy them dont afford them. Otherwise building new units that people cant afford wont help. None of my biz though😂
Kenya doesn’t have a housing problem…we have an income problem. And that’s whats this documentary has addressed; less money. There are houses but people can’t afford to rent them. We can blame this on the gentrification problem and the bad economy. We don’t need more houses, we need more money…we will build our own homes
for the Kenyan part of this report, what Edith is reporting here has nothing to do with a housing shortage. You have a shortage of houses when people, than can afford houses are not able to find one, because they are just not there. But what Edith is reporting is an income problem, people don‘t have the income to be able to afford a house. You can build 200.000 houses per year and this problem is not solved. You need to address the income problem so that people are able to afford a live in dignity.
Roots of the problem in my opinoon 1) toxic cultural components- e.g., chief vs servant culture where it is normal for one to grab and have everything and ok for another to be a pauper. 2) tribalism vs nationalism. It's a misleading video. The title should be, "slums in Kenya," or "poor living conditions in Kenya." This is not a new problem, the Western media has always shown only this side of Africa. Technically, the Masaai in Kenya and Karamajongo in Uganda, culturally live a nomadic life. However, it's true that development everywhere creates homelessness. But in many countries in Africa, it relegates people to living in slums. What shocks many westerners is that in their respective countries, the poor are pushed out of sight. But in Africa, a slum could exist next to a skyscraper.
corporations were buying up real estate long before the population hit 8 billion. they will keep doing it long after it has fallen, even if it was 5 billion. as we can see in china and usa, they would rather let apartments fall apart than give up those homes or reduce rent levels.
