    Free Government Housing is not the only solution. South Africa has built about 4 Million Free housing units for the people, but there are still homeless people in every city. Having a house and no means of sustaining it is what brings people to urban areas to look for work because there are no economies in rural areas. With the weather changes many who lived from small farming can't do that anymore.

      I hope you know this whole story is based on less than 2 thousand people. Where they had houses that were illegally built near a river when it flood and people died the government demolished the houses. 99.99 percent of people in kenya have a rural home. We dont have a crisis but as an african you should know by now poverty strories about africa are big business in the west

      @@marym-w2e The report did not mention that the last floods were in April, but Census Kenya already mentioned the issue in 2019. However, it does not make poverty caused by Climate change less real. People have lost properties due to severe weather we even have earthquakes on the continent. I did not see it as another poverty story but an existential crisis that I have seen in many Western cities I have been to, Belgium, Germany Los Angeles, Paris, and many more, they all have a homeless problem. less development in Rural Areas leads to overcrowded cities all over the world.

    There are millions of vacant houses all over kenya. They are unoccupied because people who would love to occupy them dont afford them. Banks should reduce interest rates for property loans to 3 or 4% p.a. Then landlords reduce rent by 50%. Also the govt can regulate rent based on standardized tiers.
    Otherwise building new units that people cant afford wont help. None of my biz though😂

    Kenya doesn’t have a housing problem…we have an income problem. And that’s whats this documentary has addressed; less money. There are houses but people can’t afford to rent them. We can blame this on the gentrification problem and the bad economy. We don’t need more houses, we need more money…we will build our own homes

  • @thomasschwinn1512
    @thomasschwinn1512 9 часов назад +1

    for the Kenyan part of this report, what Edith is reporting here has nothing to do with a housing shortage. You have a shortage of houses when people, than can afford houses are not able to find one, because they are just not there. But what Edith is reporting is an income problem, people don‘t have the income to be able to afford a house. You can build 200.000 houses per year and this problem is not solved. You need to address the income problem so that people are able to afford a live in dignity.

    Roots of the problem in my opinoon
    1) toxic cultural components- e.g., chief vs servant culture where it is normal for one to grab and have everything and ok for another to be a pauper.
    2) tribalism vs nationalism. We gained independence with countries like South korea. But they are one race. We are many different communities competing for our tribal leader to be in power and resources e and not caring for each other. There is no real nationalism or patriotism. The president doesn't truelly care about all Kenyans neither does ministry of health Cate about health in all of kenya nor does education Care about education in all of Kenya.
    Above are just a few of culture problems which may change over the years or may not change

    • @lonewulfmo9128
      @lonewulfmo9128 21 час назад

      Edit. OK I am inaccurate in comparing kenyas history with that of South korea. My point is that kenya has too many races and ethnicities competing for political power. Countries with one race in my view have it easier.
      The only solution is for us Kenyans to learn and socially evolve and institutionalise lessons learnt from corruption and tribalism.
      Thanx to dw for interest in African issues.

    A housing shortage is not necessarily a crisis. Most of the people without homes in Nairobi and other urban centres in Kenya left their rural homes, so it is not that they are homeless per se. The same is replicated elsewhere in Africa. The digital nomads pricing up uptowm areas in cities is another issue. But real estate speculators do the same yet nobody accuses them of it.

    It's a misleading video. The title should be, "slums in Kenya," or "poor living conditions in Kenya." This is not a new problem, the Western media has always shown only this side of Africa. Technically, the Masaai in Kenya and Karamajongo in Uganda, culturally live a nomadic life. However, it's true that development everywhere creates homelessness. But in many countries in Africa, it relegates people to living in slums. What shocks many westerners is that in their respective countries, the poor are pushed out of sight. But in Africa, a slum could exist next to a skyscraper.

      I live in an mid developed eu country, mid developed for the eu standards ofc, we have officially 400 homeless, but the homeless network doubts those numbers and says we might have up to 2000 homeless across the country, all cities combined.

Massive corruption, massive debts and taxes. Already free education, free Healthcare have failed. The challenge is to reduce the size of the government which is honestly impossible. Homeless in Africa or Asia are different then homeless in Western Europe and America. In asia 80 % ppl have thier homes paid off or old homes from parents ppl live in combine family system you don't have to pay interest. Weather is good you can sleep outiside or put a tent ⛺️ in empty land nobody bugg you but in America its way different u can never pay off home high property tax if it paid of lot of bills insurance .weather is too cold so many laws you can't camp any where so America should do something its a serious problem where u go in crazy cold winter night time police bugg homeless ppl what if you loose your job

      These Germans are very racist. Very hopeless people. I have seen homeless people in Germany. But they will never report that.

    2 Reason ppl are homeless .back in the Days ppl live in Clay or mudd home they were cheap now ppl doing competition to build expensive house you need lot of money . Other thing is Rich ppl take poor ppl land making money of selling homes due to interest they sit home getting Rich by doing nothing poor getting more poor . Make a simple home with Clay and roof with cane that will be simple home door of wood 🪵
