  • Some of the risks of having kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty procedure are infection, bleeding, increased back pain, nerve damage and cement leaking out of position. Dr. Justin Sporrer, Neurosurgeon at Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, says the risks are very low, but those would include bleeding outside of the spine or inside of the spine.
He says another risk would be leakage of cement into the blood vessels, which can go up to the heart and the lungs. "Exceedingly rare. I've never seen these complications personally, except when somebody has had the procedure done elsewhere, unfortunately, and then they present to our emergency department and we take the best care of them that we can," he highlights.

0:14 Another kyphoplasty's risk (not related to vertebroplasty): *young patients* should get this surgery method as soon as possible (no more than one week after their injury event usually) due to avoid vertebral body splitting along the vertebral bone enlargement step that is finalized to restore vertebral bone height. Thus, the little inflated baloons (or little "cricks") may meet a rudimental starting calcification provoking bone splitting that consequently need upper and lower discs removal, plus three involved vertebrae fusion (the targeted vertebra and the closest ones). Clearly, spine mobility ia tremendously affected by this hard event and some nerves may be permanently damaged too.
