Awww bless. Sounds like me and Elpi. She's Greek. I was down in Greece from Cornwall having driven down there in my very old battered Citroen C15 Champ tiny tiny camper van, I'm 6ft 6 so go figure. I drove to Lesvos over 2,000 miles away close to Turkey to carry out independent refugee volunteering long term and I was heavily involved with the boat rescues. I had to take the passenger seat out to fit my rather long frame into my very narrow bed down that side.
Anyway about 2 months in close to one of the refugee camps I came across a very emaciated dog with a litter of pups who were only about 3 weeks old. Kept my eye on them for the next couple of weeks. At 5 weeks old I made my move as a little black and white pup had caught my eye but he did the whole Greek thing of sticking his nose in the air turning away from me, whilst this other one, the smallest of the litter, was constantly snuffling me as if to say, pick me, pick me, I'll be your best friend forever. Long story short 9 years later we're still together. She is my best mate. I take her everywhere with me, snuggling up to her and we both know each other inside out. I wouldn't be without her for the world. Elpi is half the Greek word for 'hope' translated from 'elpida'.
When I adopted her she was only 5" long and used to sleep in my hat. She's quite a bit bigger now! The happiest most loving best friend a man could hope to have. When she snuggles that head of hers into my neck my heart melts. Oh blimey, I'm getting tearful just thinking about how much I adore her. Where's my bleddy Kleenex tissues? Bless her. 14 countries we have done so far together with more coming again soon. :)

Water would be good , solar panel and portable power pack get it fitted on the van and a Leisure battery and inverter if you have to run anything for a short time,
Then when you've got your shed built you can put it on your roof.
Are you going to use a pond liner if you youl need some soft sand to protect the liner when you put in.

🙂 Nice video,, what is the plan/idea with the pond? I think it has to be really big to hold water most of the year,, so keep it up 🙂
It is something like €30 a month at least for water and power,, and I believe it is quite expensive to get connected,, as there is like one prices for all,, might have been €800 for water 😕
An idea,, build a carport for the van,, use Solar panels for the roof and collect rain water from the roof in to IBC's that you use as the walles. (leroymerlin has 550W panels for €89 until te 28th. dual purpose roof panels 🙂)

    Happy Birthday Barney 🎉🎈
    Water & a ball - happy Barney!
I'm involved in dog rescue - dogs are products of their environment, Lucy. You've made great decisions and created a wonderful, fulfilling life for him. He's chilled because you give him the correct mental & physical stimulation - you're one of the few people who do that, and are capable of meeting a working dog's needs. Seeing working dogs like Collies going mad, because their need aren't met in a domestic environment, is horrific ...and animal abuse.
They are highly discriminatory - they have different rules for different situation/locations/people. eg not allowed on a chair rule in one room, move it too another room, dog will climb on it cuz no rules, afaic
Hang rubbish bag from a tree to stop wildlife having a party with it ? Use a sealed/Bear canister ?
Wondering if there's some trees/bushes you can plant around the pond to keep the sun off and reduce evaporation, or if it's irrelevant with the ambient temperature. Wouldn't want them using too much water themselves. Maybe just put a tarp over it - which reminds me DIY water desalination - dunno if you'd need that.

Hi Lucy, having watched a lot of Portugal homestead videos, a lot of them have stone walled wells which are very deep , and a lot of, if not all of them suffer from algae buildup or basically drop 4/5 meters due to evaporation in the heat of the summer, I fear that you may find it difficult to keep water in your pond , I would hate to see you work like crazy to make it , then have a sand pit for most of the summer, I hope I’m wrong, I heard what you said in your video, but maybe a digger to make it 20/25 ft deep would be the best way to guarantee that it will keep water in , on another point , have you thought about using the money for connecting to mains power for an investment in solar, that way you don’t have to pay bills for electricity moving forward, and I can’t imagine you would use shed loads anyway, so you don’t need a massive solar system to start off with 🤷‍♂️just some thoughts for you , not criticising you at all , take care , regards, Kevin from Herefordshire.😊

Morning Lucy, never seen anyone dig with a shovel before. Is normal to use a spade, makes life easier. Keep digging your pond, there is no law to stop you. Many over here are of grid, but is expensive too set up and will take for ever to re coop the cost, is better to get mains put in if you are close to a pole. as electric here is less than 1/2 that of U.K. Don't know what you want to live in but a lot build small sheds which they don't get permission for, but you can't live in all the time. I think you have to be out for 2 or 3 weeks a year, but a lot of these that you see for sale you can apply for a habitation license so you can convert to live in. Now there's not that many fly's about. I found it worse in England in the summer, here it's early spring and Autumn when you get a few, but stand-able, at least where I am. There is a shop like that in Guarda is called Casa China, very close too the train station. Have fun.

You have a big journey on the farm!
Sorry if it was my mistake, but you're open a whole for a pool!?
    This is hard rock!!!
Why don't you appoint a meeting with the CEO (you) with the CFO (you) and also with the Barney and discuss other solutions to land with your farms' land?
Seriously, you'll probably find someone in the village with an excavator for 60€/hour.
    Ask in the village!
Soon, the rains and cold weather will be present until the end of winter.
My suggestions are to pay 200-300€ or lesser but weeks gained.
Or someone with a tractor with the right tools, lesser cost.
Even with all the time in the world, the land is too rusty for anybody else.
Try to use more clothes to maintain the body temperature lower. And the insects will not disturb you anymore. Old fashion for work hard in the sun.
    You are very adventurous.
    Good luck!

You could have a look at glaying your pond with pigs but you will need some good fencing. Just remember that all bodies of water in Portugal are publicly owned - no worries about your pond but you may be lucky and have a clay retentive soil but knowing our own you will be more likely to have a sandy one. Have a look at what Luke and Sara are doing with their ponds.

I see you don't like insects flying around, neither do I. One thing that attracts insects is a pond or any still water. When I lived in Amsterdam there is plenty of still water with the canals, and the amount of insects was really just a nightmare.
I found that those electric bats that look like toy tennis rackets are really good for killing the insects, I never use bug pray because I don't want to spray poison around myself.
Anyway good luck with your battle against the insects.

The pond, while having water, will have mosquitos in winter, in summer it will dry out. A garden or ecen a food forest on this soil will never happen, beside of ver dry hardy plants like olive trees and some herbs. Tons of manure and/or good soil will be needed to turn this place into a garden. Tellong you this as an organic gardener for 35 years. Sorry for the brutal truth.
