  • I'm constantly on the lookout for free wood I can use to make beehive lids, bottom boards & box repairs. Any pine timber can be treated with copper naphthenate to prevent dry rot.

Great find Jeff, you have a good eye for salvaging wood. Thanks for the info.

I've done the same myself. I mainly use old TV units to make nuc hives with. I like merbau decking timber for bottom boards.

We went round some of the carpet places and found some lino in the skip which was thrown out. We have made up a piece to put on top of the frames so they don't build the burr comb. Good tip though Jeff and hope Wilma is a lot better.

I had to make some stands to pu up a new bee yard. I was heading to Lowes to price the materials and a someone in my neighborhood had removed their deck and had it on the side of the road. I asked if I could have some of the wood, they said take all you want, we have no way of hauling it off. I made all my stands as well as some tops for top bar hives and what not. Most of the planks were 5/4. but the way I made the stands it won't matter and they will last for years more.
What is a skip? I'm assuming it is some type of refuse container.

Shannon Wyatt a skip is a trash bin, just some aussie slang.
