This woman and her band redefined rock in an era when it was suffering multiple identity crises. Phenomenal talents, all of them. One of the only bands that deserved their massive success in so many ways.
Their debut was a great album (their 2nd) was a good follow up before their bassit and guitarist died...They hardly redefined rock and roll. The Beatles and Nirvana did that!
I got to see this original line up on my 16th birthday on Sunday, August 16th 1981 at the Tennessee Theater in Nashville! Awesome concert! Too bad that James and Pete died not too long after that.
These early interviews are so fantastic. It allows you to see the original members of the band in a playful atmosphere. It is clear from this video that they loved each other. Each one brought something valuable. So sad it ended tragically.
I fell hopelessly in love with this woman over 30 years ago. Listen to her speak. Even just talking, her voice is like honey. I could listen to her all day of course but it's just impossible not to just stare at the screen looking at these old videos. Ahh Chrissie, while the rest were hanging up posters of Farrah, you were my dream girl! And I'll bet there are a million guys out there who were just as captivated as I was! And then, there was Pat Benatar, the only close second.
The original Pretenders is my all time favorite band. It's great the way James grabs Chrissie's sleeve. "I don't like to go out to clubs or anything. I stay in my room and drink hot chocolate, watch movies..." --- Chrissie Hynde
Great band brilliant songs and Chrissie is not only gorgeous but has the voice of an absolute angel. She's definitely in my top 5 of female vocalists in fact she may even top the list.
So sad this line up was soon over. They were never quite as good after that although Chrissie is as good as ever, one of the few older artists whose voice hasn't gone.
one brain to the pretenders....chrissie hynde....her songs...her voice...her charisma! thank god they bottled her genius in these recordings and videos!
Maybe. I think it took the entire group to make the fab music. Without the original line up CH is pretty dull imo she is no Keith Richards or Mick Jagger. Just another chick. IMO ONLY
I love the blocking and antics during this interview! I am excited that I will cover Brass In Pocket for the first time this coming April 30, 2022 in a nearby city. I have loved that song since its first appearance on MTV back in 1981. Love You, Chrissie!! 🎷🍾😲🚗😊💪🏼🦵🏼👗👉🏼💃🏽😉
This band, the original line up, could have been the Rolling Stones of the 80s circa Mick Taylor (69-Dec. 74). Fardon and Honeyman-Scott two of the most talented musicians to come out of the late 70s- early 80s. They really really rocked it and that first album and the performances were just so right on. Almost garage band-ish perfection. I did see the next line up in Chicago three times. But nothing like this band. Too bad they could not hold it together
My God....was it 1982???? I was freezin' my ass off in West Germany, and listening to Chrissie, Joan Jett, and Nena. Thanks for the memories, girls!AAAO
For someone from Ohio, Chrissie's absorbed a pretty good London accent--when she tries. But then she says something like "country bumpkin" and it's Midwestern American after that all the way.
Best album for me would have to be first one,...Precious, The phonecall, Up the neck Tattooed loveboys and The wait. Then in later years, Get Close got me playing their music to death all over again,..Room full of mirrors etc, Awesome.
I'm 61 now, & still alarm my neighbors by howling at the moon in my front yard whenever I play or see gorgeous Chrissie. The police are on their way as I type 😃
Classic example here of how Farndon rubs Hynde up the wrong way and that's why he was kicked out of the band! She couldn't stand his reckless drug use, problem was she didn't see the disaster coming with Honeyman-Scott who she, ironically, unlike Farndon, over indulged.
Shows the camaraderie before it went south and even some sexual tension. I like the little kisses he blows her way when the rest are playfully saying they don’t like her.
She took on a nice patina of a British accent, which is totally natural. Impossible to live in England for even a short time, without that quirky accent rubbing off on you!
Andrew Russell Jimmy Scott said that to Pete Farndon...guess JHS use of cocaine wasnt any worse than Pete using heroin. Scott was what some would call a cocaine snob, "my drug is better than yours" type. Like coke wont fuckaperson up as heroin does! Hah, it all gets a user in the end, though...up, down or sideways...sad for the two of them, who passed less than 1 year apart.
@@typingnoises The Who did the same thing on The Russell Harty Show in 1973 in London. They all moved across to the other side of the sofa when Pete Townshend said that he wrote all the songs.
I'd always heard one was suicide. I forget their names James I think.......man that guy was talented on guitar. Bassist was awesome....remends me of the bassist from Nirvana Kris Novelselvic........his style I mean and maybe a little in their look.
Man! Look at that sweet face. She did not have to say anything. Just sit there and look like a doll. Those sissy's need to get off the couch and go somewhere far away.
What a fun interview. Love the antics of the band members. Still seems so sad that two of those guys died so young.
D. E. A. D drugs end all dreams RIP James, Pete. 😇😇
Lovely to watch, and sad at the same time.
I saw her in a small concert venue close enough to really see the interaction between the band…. She is a true leader, and that voice is undeniable.
This woman and her band redefined rock in an era when it was suffering multiple identity crises. Phenomenal talents, all of them. One of the only bands that deserved their massive success in so many ways.
Bullshit, Punk, Rock and Roll and even Pop music was flourishing!
Their debut was a great album (their 2nd) was a good follow up before their bassit and guitarist died...They hardly redefined rock and roll.
The Beatles and Nirvana did that!
Billy Idol especially.
They had incredible chemistry - the videos for talk of the town and message of love capture their dynamic energy.
She has beautiful eyes. I wonder why she's hidden them all these years. She is an amazing woman.
So when she actually looked you in the eyea, it meant more...
Yeah man it’s the loook !!!🤛🏽
With great power comes great responsibility!

WOW !!!!!!

What a GORGEOUS face and great singer!

Right? They DO remind me of each other. I saw an interview or something about both of them...
Joan Jett a close 3rd?
I like the Pretenders and Chrissie but she's a stylist, Pat Benatar is a trained opera singer with a flawless range...nothing alike.
was, is, and always will be one of my favorite songwriters and performers. She rocks.
Pete and Chrissie are both so cuuuuute omg
That face! That face! That pretty face! Even today, at age 65, she still has pretty that beams out of her brown eyes.
The eyes 👀 are actually sort of a hazel green-brown. Very unique and gorgeous ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most underrated musicians. Chrissy
Can’t stand “ under rated “ it so over used . What do you expect?
They loved each other... and that's cool cause they were great!

I love how her voice is slowly acclimating to a British accent.
I hate it. Shows how she wanted to fit in despite being perfect for the role.

Completely agree. Beautiful and had a fantastic and distinctive voice. Easily in my top 5 as well.

Top 5 for sure
That is conclusion i came too also ..
pete, jimmy, martin, and chrissie. the best pretenders line up
The ONLY one.
The rest was Chrissie's solo career.
@sabbracadabra The British wanted that music, Americans NSM.
Just was the time & place.

Can you imagine having a bass lick that you recorded years ago being played all over the usa evey(week)day and for years and years?
Always liked her. A true beauty.
This is fucking awesome! The Pretenders have always been one of my top % favorites, but being from the 80's, we never got to see stuff like this..
Chrissy was so down to earth, very articulate and very shy.(and obviously very atractiva!)
My god she is so fucking beautiful!!!
@Ectoplasmic Feedback Doesn't she though?
She is so damn cool.
Stephanie Smith Heck yeah she is!!!
Pete Farndon, James Honeyman - Scott, Martin Chambers, Chrissie Hynde.
Oh god that was so fun to watch. If there’s more, please post it.
"she says that to all the bass players" ......that was funny
Mum says he was playing at Live Aid, and apparently I was there! I was just a baby and slept through the whole thing but still, I was there!

the great Pretenders line up, ended way too short!
She was really quite pretty...I'd have left the USA with her.

Have they been put in the "Hall of Fame " yet ? Even though people age , her voice is still great. She was hot in her time .
Yep she was inducted

GREAT interview...these guys were so f*ckin awesome together, and it's such a shame that Pete, and James were taken from us so very soon.
It is a shame that they left this world too soon, but I believe it was their lifestyle choice that sealed their fate.
more like deathstyle
So young and energetic.
