I can assure you that you dont. Most of us in UK only have time for a cup of tea and a biscuit. Outside of the home it's almost impossible to get a good cup of tea here. I've had better tea in New York and Paris.
The dog is so precious...The pinky is never out... yikes... that is worse than the dog licking the plate!! She admitted to being an etiquette rebel. Yes she is, haha!!! Very entertaining... wrong...but entertaining!!!
As soon as I saw the comic book style set, I knew I was in the right place. But as an American, I am slightly fascinated by the Conish vs. Devonshire cream debate. It's kinda like the North vs South iced tea debate: Most Northerners add sugar (if any at all) after the tea is cooled while Southerners add sugar while it's steeping making official Sweet Tea.
The Basics of Eating a Scone Properly Scoop out clotted cream and jams onto your plate, enough for one scone. Break apart a small bite-sized portion of scone with your hands or if using a knife, cut the scone horizontally. Use a knife to slather on cream and jam onto the broken-off piece of scone..... My mother would have left the table if I broke my scone in half and started taking bites out of it. That would be considered terribly rude and anything but lady like .... I’m quite sure that if you we’re privy to finishing school you would break apart your scone into delicate bite-size pieces as is appropriate in polite society.
I love the little touches which add to the fun of the video, such as the way you wink and your doggie sharing in the fun ! Thank you so much, I'm a fan for life !!
The pinky thing came about because small porcelain cups have very small handles and made that way so you would only hold them in a dainty delicate way. this often meant that you could only use two or three fingers and hence the little finger.
Did teas with the kids when they were little, reminding them their manners were not quite up to snuff for a visit from the queen, we had great fun with that. They didn't know who the queen was and they didn't care.
I can totally relate to the sausage fingers thing :D That really made me laugh, thank you! I was told to touch my thumb and first finger together into the handle, and use my middle finger to steady the cup. It works well for me!
Tea on a high dining table is not 'high tea'. 'High tea' is what you might call supper or dinner ;) That said - it's a rather nice tea set you have and it would be nice to share a cuppa and chat :)
I love the name Sue Flay , if it is your actual name i truly apologize for the laugh it gave me . It sounds so much like the french Soufflet and i could imagine it very well being a drag queen name with a huge bouffant chignon hairdo calling her Miss Sue Flay !
Hi miss sue. I love your video. I watched some of those afternoon tea videos on youtube. I love all of them. Afternoon tea is such a beautiful tradition. May you have a tipp for me... How do i ensure that i can enjoy my tea hot. I love love love to have it hot. In porcelaine temperature goes down quite quickly. For that reason i bought a turkish tea pot. It provides excellent and hot tea. But i ADORE all this china porcelaine tea services too. Do you have some tricks to share... how to serve hot tea with a traditional china porcelaine tea service? Big hug and thank for the lovely video.
Thank you, it was interesting. And I want to add a comment: when I saw in the beginning of the video how you gave your dog to lick tea from the cup I felt unpleasanty and rejection. I believe people and animals should have separate dishes and cups. In the end it's good that you are interested in this topic. I feel the same way :)
She got more things wrong than she got right. If she wants to break with tradition and do things her own way in her home, then bully for her. But she made a video called afternoon tea etiquette and then proceeded to leave out all the etiquette associated with afternoon tea. So many non-English are going to watch this and think this nonsense is actually true. You never EVER stick your pinky out (that's a huge faux pas) and high tea is tea served in the early evening late afternoon period which is a full meal. That's high tea, not just tea served on a high table. And that's just for starters. How can anyone teach etiquette when they can't even hold the cup correctly? She's no expert. Just someone looking for social media attention.
Thank you so much for taking the time out to watch and for commenting, especially on Christmas Day - I'm honoured you'd waste such a day in my little space on the World Wide Web. Pinkies up.... Because why the heck not.
It's important to note, that's it's called afternoon tea and not high tea being shown above. Many from North America seem to get the two mixed up. High tea is a more substantial meal (fish, meats, and the sort) served around dinner time. It is served at a "high table" (hence the name) and with high-backed chairs. Afternoon tea (as above) is between 3-5 pm, and is typically served on a lower table with lower chairs.. These days.. not always so anymore.
Las galletas no se cogen con los dedos para mojar en tea, es preciso utilizar las pinzas y mojar las galletas sin que el líquido llegue a tocar el metal u otro material del que estén facturadas las pinzas. My friend and I are hosting a tea for the women at church. My big question is, what do you do at teas besides eat and drink? Are there any fun games you play to bring the women together?
Yeah I definitely hear you, I remember when I was a young child my mother had these friends who had this dog and he would literally sit at the kitchen table with them they had this chair/stool thing that he was trying to sit on and he would literally sit there at the table and they would give him a plate and he learn to sit there and eat with them and it was just out rages lol
Really good video...... but you should only break your scones in half, you should never dunk biscuits and when holding your tea cup pinch your thumb and index finger in the handle and let it rest on your third finger; your other fingers should lay underneath, they must not all be on the handle.
Hello Miss Sue Flay, I watch your afternoon tea and love your gold tea spoons, I love to buy tiny tea spoon and a tiny gold tea fork to use it with cake....PLEASE HELP ME WHERE CAN I PURCHASE THOSE SPOONS AND FORKS IF THEY SALE A TINY FORK TOO....I hope to hear from you soon......Thank You so much for your help !!!!!
Hi Kristi - I'm afraid these are antique spoons from a local antique shop in Ely, Cambridgeshire, so I've no idea where these would be purchased, I'm very sorry! Good luck on your hunt!
Hi Sue Flay, 'Well" Thanks if you ever find out an Antique Shop that sell those pretty TINY GOLD SPOON AND FORK,,,,,PLEASE let me know, would very much appreciated :) Thank You Sue !
Sue Flay I don't have a tiny gold spoon, so I use my regular size silver spoon for my tea time....I don't like it at all because my silver spoon is too big, the color does not match. My tea cup, saucer, tea pot and tea caddy all have a gold trim ... I'm still looking, hope one day soon I can find a store that sell tiny gold spoon and fork !
Did you know , by any chance, that was brought into England by Princess Catarina de Braçança, daughter of His Magesty The King João IV of Portugal, when she married King Charles II of England, around 1660? The Princess introduced the habit of drinking tea at any time during the day as she was used to in Portugal while living with her parents The King and Queen Of Portugal, back in the 17 century. Much later , in the XIX century The 7ª Duchess of Bedford introduced the "five o'clock tea in London.
As an American, I will take my tea in a mug and I will put my milk in after as I need to gauge the strength of the tea. Honestly, I am just here for the pastries and good conversation. Everything else is of no interest. Except for your awesome looking dog. If the dog just happens to get a bit of scone while we’re chatting, more’s the better.
They are the same its a bit of snob value.....however clotted cream is cornish .....clotted cream is just baked in oven then chilled it makes for a thick cream.and intensifies the flavour almost butter like...

We also use the thumb and the index finger to pinch the cup then use the middle finger to hold I up. You only split the scone once which is in half !
Eve agreed, read my other comments below on this, I NEVER usually do this, I was asked to for this video for fun and forever regret that... now, please continue to BE KIND. Thank you.
Dos: Drink Eat Enjoy Don't: Don't do things at expense of etiquette and other people As someone from England, you should only care whether you and your guests are enjoying your time. Stop wasting your time on etiquette, you're just drinking tea and eating cake and scones. It's an enjoyable event, don't make it hard and annoying for yourself
True, life is too short and etiquette rules may be cool but enjoying your life to the fullest the way you want is even cooler! One rule we should all follow: avoid toxic, full of negativity people and choose our friends wisely...
I'm guessing because everything she advised is incorrect and actual tea drinkers are aware of that fact. No one is going to subscribe to someone giving them faulty and potentially embarrassing advice.

never never ever break your scone to bits!!! just into half!

They actually did break it piece by piece in the 1800s and buttered each piece before eating
You are absolutely correct.
The Basics of Eating a Scone Properly

No pinky is necessary. Neither a hook.
TheMrsliferette
Indeed but what is the proper ediquette concerning tea time in your boxer shorts?
Love this! haha. Although as a Devonshire girl we love to have cream first then jam, the scone is merely the tool to get the cream in the mouth.
Karen Mitchell Karen, I like this... very much the tool to get cream in mouth - I Like that a lot! Miss Sue Flay ; )

How do you know I didn’t warm them up?...
Okay, I must know. What is the brand name and pattern name of that gorgeous pink flowered/speckled China??
This video is great! I was just wondering the difference of a traditional afternoon tea for the cream tea
I am amazed of having do many wrong teachingd about afternoon tea etiquette nowadays including this video!

What about the order in which food is eaten? I was brought up that the order was sandwiches, then scones and teabread, then plain cake, then fancy cakes, then biscuits.
Eat in which order you like Jay, stop panicking and enjoy!
What’s the difference between tea bread and a scone or regular cake? I’m not sure exactly what tea bread is specifically.
The bottom tier is first (finger sandwiches), then the middle tier (scones), then finally the top tier (desserts). So, you're correct.

Dunking biscuits are very bad manners.... I know, because i do it !
One of those embarassing people who try but never quite succeed at getting it right.
....Story of my life
I have a good question?!
hello miss souffle ;) lolllll
Allow me to give you an advice of "proper etiquette".. NEVER let your dog eat or drink out of your cups and plates.. NASTY!
Eve agreed, read my other comments below on this, I NEVER usually do this, I was asked to for this video for fun and forever regret that... now, please continue to BE KIND. Thank you.

What is the point of putting your pinky up??
Nice vid. But dunking a biscuit not so good I think. Spoils the tea anyway.
Bluewren Reilly no rules - the tea police wont come get you if you do decide to dunk ; )
Dos:
Drink
Eat
Enjoy
Don't:
Don't do things at expense of etiquette and other people
As someone from England, you should only care whether you and your guests are enjoying your time. Stop wasting your time on etiquette, you're just drinking tea and eating cake and scones. It's an enjoyable event, don't make it hard and annoying for yourself
Connor Moorhouse Simply a bit of old English fun - agreed Connor, best to enjoy it however you like... I prefer my zombie teaparties, much more fun!
True, life is too short and etiquette rules may be cool but enjoying your life to the fullest the way you want is even cooler! One rule we should all follow: avoid toxic, full of negativity people and choose our friends wisely...
Low tea on a low table and high tea on a high table. You are kidding right?
No, I'm deadly serious... It's important life skills you're learning here... 😂
Miss Sue Flay You either have afternoon tea at any sized table or high tea which is A different meal altogether.
Miss Sue Flay Try Googling High Tea to discover what it is all about.
+tnurse50 great idea, I will do, thanks : )
this was one of the best videos I have seen on afternoon tea. I am shocked that you don't have more subscribers!
Thank you very much Dee Dee!
I'm guessing because everything she advised is incorrect and actual tea drinkers are aware of that fact. No one is going to subscribe to someone giving them faulty and potentially embarrassing advice.
"Etti-ket"?
FiPinkin'sup
what about the harmful bacteria in doggy's mouth? eewwwwww!
S A Q Agreed - I hate that too - my videographer asked me to do it against my usual rules and I’m eternally paying for it... 😳
I love you so much with all my heart napkin
Lovely video, quite comical when you called your fingers sausages! Lol
Is that Kates engagement ring?
