I hate that this show never went anywhere. Duncan Sheik really knows how to make depressing lyrics sound far more upbeat and catchier than they should be and it's PERFECT for this kind of creepy Fosse style choreography.
Benjamin's voice was incredible, closest to Christian Bale's but I really wanted to see more of the London Cast version with Jonathan Bailey and Matt Smith, there aren't any videos at all!
it’s also the fact that this musical isn’t really for Broadway. it would have faired much better as an off-broadway show, then potentially transferring to broadway. it’s very experimental and darkly comedic. i think if it had waited a few months, or even years, it probably would have gone over better. hopefully someone will do an off-broadway revival, because it definitely deserves a second chance. while i don’t LOVE the fact that Riverdale has used its songs, i will say that i’m happy it’s helping more people discover American Psycho.
Benjamin Walker is a tremendous talent. I first saw him in The War Boys and was very impressed with his acting. I had no idea he could also sing and dance.
I think the Late Show did more harm than good to the show with this clip, and that's absolutely not the fault of the cast and creative team. This probably looked amazing onstage with the original lights and staging, but the Late Show's setup doesn't do it justice. The dancers are too visible, the strobe lighting doesn't really hit as well as it should, and the camera captures the dancers from all of these awkward angles and linger on them when they're supposed to be covered in darkness. I really would have loved to see this onstage in its intended form.
I really hope the show picks up again. It was fantastic and so damn enjoyable. I still got the fake money from when i saw the Broadway run with Mr. Walker
Ah, a Sony Walkman with mega bass and Dolby noise reduction with 2 band graphic equaliser. Excellent. I think an upgrade to a discman with anti skip feature once again with mega bass feature would be appropriate.
In 2016 when this aired on Stephen Colbert's CBS broadcast, I liked it. I have zero experience with theater or dance or anything like this production. But they had me when with the electropop sawtooth bass synthesizer. Ahahaha. The music piece "Selling Out" is a fairly nice droning piece. A lot of the same resonance over and over. I like junk like that! :) Thanks for the fun music, Duncan!
So why did London get a cast recording, but not us? And I’m talking about the Broadway cast. They never released one. And I wanted this version of Selling Out.
Because it was workshopped in London before the Broadway run. It did extremely well in London but producers got overzealous upon transitioning it to Broadway. This musical is much better suited for Off Broadway audiences
This guy seems alright as Bateman but I much prefer the British version with Matt Smith, he had a really creepy and obsessive tone to his voice, every word felt calculated.
Greenleaf Productions Just managed to watch a bootleg of Ben Walkers performance as Bateman, and having seen him in the full context of the show and I completely agree with you, both actors approach the role from a very different angle but both manage to give an incredible performance. Walker plays the more charming, almost overly hammy side to Bateman's personality, he excels at delivering the humor, while still giving a great dramatic turn. Matt Smith on the other hand was much more dramatic and arguably a much scarier and less relatable character for it but once again still amazing in the role. It's kind of like Walker plays Bruce Wayne, while Smith plays Batman.
@@Giger_essay The film is on Australian Netflix, or at least it was a few months ago. And there was a stage version of this in Australia but Covid prevented me from being able to go to see it, so I hope they bring it back soon.
Never ever saw this musical but I listened to the soundtrack sooo much when it came out. American Pyscho fits so well as a musical. Over the top, silly, comedic, and a good way of doing a dark comedy.
My god this whole production has such amazing potential, it just needed to be introduced at the right time, and in the right way, with the right lead. Which isn’t an insult to Benjamin walker, he was absolutely phenomenal in Andrew Jackson, he just isn’t the physically intimidating, coldly calculated, narcissistic Bateman that I think would really sell this show. I just think with a higher budget, better cast, and more political commentary, this show could do amazing things, even if it doesn’t completely translate the vibe of the novel
We had our West Coast premiere in San Francisco, Ray-Of-Light Theatre! I had not previously seen it & was impressed by the amazing social insights that are still relevant in our materialistic ideas of success....ironic considering that this success in limited to the One PerCent & wager earners (teachers) can no longer afford to live here. I think this had a lot of good intentions but it never really took off. That "Uh-Oh" chorus and some of he rhyme schemes a little clunky. The staging and performances were very good but the song was underwhelming to me. It's difficult subject matter so I applaud it didn't go the dissonant Sondheim route or the melodramtic Jim Steinman rock opera shtick but I was rooting for this but lost interest half way through.
What's with the out-of-the-box casting for Patrick? It's cool, but it's interesting that they go from Hipster nerd Matt Smith to Ben Walker, who totally did not look like Patrick Batemen before this XD. He's very good though
Oh for sure. It's just remarkable to see his transformation from the old photos of him I googled. Same for Matt SMith in the London Production, especially considering this was his first major singing role.
Oh absolutely. We can attest to the fact that Ben worked his tail off to get in shape for this. Playing objective perfection is no easy task. We were trying to get the whole cast an Equinox campaign because every one of them was in incredible shape. Thanks for the note, Angela. Hope you had a chance to see the show.
