Love your videos man, keep up the good work. I was/am such a vintage fender snob and you really showed me that the snobbery is so ridiculous. That squier in your hands sounds as good as it gets...
Man, this is some amazing bass playing...so much, you just convinced me to buy a pack of flats.....awesome sound and great music and playing!!! Cheers!
Chromes are the best flats. After Labella, Thomastik, and GHS. I finally had a set on Chromes on a second-bass that I bought, of course a PBass. Really balanced, both tone-wise and tension-wise. Really good video and riffs here!
I feel like the bass needs rounds in order to cut through the mix. And I believe bass needs to cut through the mix more due to A. IMO producers don't turn it up loud enough and B. Most people have crappy listening devices with no bass, or they purposefully buy headphones with no bass because they don't understand or appreciate bass.
Hmm... I'm thinking funk guitar would probably also work well with 11 gauge flatwounds on hardtails. It's the percussive 70s disco sound you are actually after. It's the characteristic. Edit: Reading some of the comments. Yes! It's the "leathery thump" sound.
I’m getting a new Jazz behs (just player series nothing special). I’m assuming that these ship with rounds rather than flats on as standard. Does anyone know? Cheers
Roundwounds for sure. Even Steve Harris signature bass comes with these, despite him being exclusively a flats player. It’s just cheaper for them. Exceptions are custom shop guitars (like Pino Palladino model) and JMJ Mustang.
@@PiotrHryncyszyn thanks Bro. Thought so. As you say, they’re cheaper so can’t imagine they’re in a rush to lose profit! Just out of interest, is there anything visually that sets rounds apart from flats at all?
Flat-wound strings feel great, and they're perfect for fretless, but the tone they have is pretty much the opposite of what I want. I want that bold, piercing, punchy tone. The nylon tapewound steel core La Bella strings have an interesting mix of soft and punchy.
@@monz7951 I've tried them before. They don't have them for 6 string bass or in the gauge that I want them. I tried some on my 4 string. They sounded good, but the tension and the friction was too high. They resisted sliding more than a good set of round wounds would. And the tension was so high, it was like I was trying to play a cello in the cold. Ernie ball makes some great guitar strings, but if you're looking for something to put on a fretless bass you should look towards LaBella.
@@alecrisser12 I understand, I've never tried them myself as I don't dig their sound but the tone from what I've heard seemed to fit your description. I love La Bella flats and tapes on any bass, their dark tone and thumpiness is unmatched in my opinion. I think the main thing is working in the right context with other musicians that understand and dig that tonal concept, otherwise they can get buried fast in a band mix. Cheers
You can still play more recent or new groundbreaking music with flats. They are just a tool for creation. It is up to the player’s imagination. Don’t limit yourself.
I love flats, but what I love even is more is how YOU play flats Danny. Holy smokes!
I'm absolutely in love with flatwounds. All my basses has them except for my fretless which has black nylon taped flatwounds.
This young guy is so funky, ever try flatwounds with a plectrum? Tone heaven!
Flatwounds with pick = instant mccartney

Nice first gen Squier 60s Classic Vibe. People sleep on these, though they are kinda hard to find now.
I really hope they add the fiesta red and sonic blue back to the lineup
@@slimkickens wish I could find one myself.
@@CordScott I saw a J version pop up a few weeks ago, I stupidly declined because I thought it weighed more than 4kg. Really regret it now.
I had one and foolishly sold it on ! Great bass it was and I used roto 77 flats on it
I've got the sonic blue model, and it plays waaay above the $250 price tag i paid
I put flats on my Squier Afinity P-bass. I love both the sound AND feel of flatwounds.
I love the fiesta red on your bass. I have the same model in the sonic blue. One of the best basses I own and the cheapest.
such a great player - musicality & technique in perfect harmony! rock on
Excellent, man. I'm a few weeks in on the slow but rewarding break-in period of a set of Chromes on my main bass.
The quick/cheat way is to coat the strings in a load of body lotion and hair wax!
Man, this is some amazing bass playing...so much, you just convinced me to buy a pack of flats.....awesome sound and great music and playing!!! Cheers!
Those are some spicy sounding flats! Love your playing, man! May I know what flats you got strung on your bass? Reminds me of Bruce Thomas' bass.
Hell yeah funky!
Flats just have that rich thump that I love in a bass
Those fingers are dancing🕺🔥
Looks like a 2010s Fender Squier 1960s Precision. One of the best basses you will hear. :)
Correct on both counts!
No such thing as a fender squier.
@@DannySapko Fantastic player and fantastic bass. I have one and will never sell it. Have flat wounds on it as well. 😊
Sorry. Squier made by Fender. Supposed to be budget friendly basses, but 2010s Classic Vibes were very close to Fenders sound at a fraction of cost.
@@ileutur6863 My bass says Squier by Fender on the head stock. Why would Fender do that if they had nothing to do with there creation?
Groovy Gravy Baby .....
I ❤️ it!
I have Rotosound flats on my P bass & my jazz bass. Also have Rotosound tapewounds on my Epiphone Les Paul bass. Clearly, I’m into flats right now.

Try dr legends man
That string feels real smooth and the tone is really nice and warm
For something totally different for a flat, the EB chrome slinky flats are super cool
Question for you - do you get your backing tracks somewhere or are you writing/playing yourself?
Wooww!!! Awesome playing man. 👌🏼💯 so clean. Awesome tone.
Now that’s how you play BEHS!!!

Great work Danny! It's good to see you uploading reguarly again. You'll need to do the video on the cheap Gear4Music bargain bass :)

What flatwounds are you rocking here?
Love the P behs btw

Chromes on this one, but I usually use Thomastik.

Bright zingy light gauge rounds aren't unsuitable for many types of music.
Pick the right tool for the job
