1:52 "i have never seen a nation go through so many flags" - while sitting in the US which changes it Flag everytime a new state joins.
Gotta love those minor differences.
yeah, but that was over the course of 240 years. And also, not all states join individually, one time the US just added 5 stars directly cuz 5 states joined, they don't have to update their flag 5 separate times for that.
@@dogodog1247 the Afghan flags were technically older though
"in this short a time period"
The United States has had 28 official flags over a period of 245 years, all based on the same design except the first (Union Jack in the canton). Afghanistan has gone through 25 flags in 312 years, 19 of which were in the 20th century alone, and 7 in just the year 1929, with several different designs used at various points.
Drew: I've never seen a nation go through so many flags.
Also Drew: lives in the USA, a nation that changes its flag every time a new state is added.
At least the US is consistent about it. Like it is just a subtle change dealing with the stars. Unlike Afghanistan, you could time travel to the US during any year in the last 3 centuries and any quick glance at a flag will tell you that you are in the US.
The united states didnt change their flag 6 times in a single year, and its not like there were 50 different US flags with a single new star each time. Timelines matter when you are being critical
Jesse wtf ur talking about
To be fair, that has happened exactly twice in the last hundred years, in 1959 and 1960.
"What symbol is that, togo? Is it infinity?"
It's phi, a symbol now used to represent the golden ratio. The golden ratio is 1:φ, and is the most appealing to look at for a bunch of reasons but I'm no mathmetician.
φ as a number is 1+sqrt(5) all over 2 (approximately 1.618), and rectangles in the golden ratio (1:φ) are generally agreed upon to be "perfect" because people just like it. Approximations include 2:3, 3:5 and 5:8.
its one nice ratio
It's the ratio that the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence approach between themselves. Since this sequence is seen in nature a lot, it's makes shapes with that ratio really appealing to the eye. The golden rectangle (A rectangle with that ratio) has been scientifically found to be the easiest shape to look at. There's also a bunch of cool mathematical tricks you can do with phi (Such as how phi^2 = phi +1 and 1/phi = phi - 1) among other things. Togo made a really good choice with their flag ratio.
@@hexagon4242 I slightly disagree with some of your points. However, all of them are common misconceptions, so I feel like it's worth stating why.
1. The Fibonacci sequence producing the Golden Ratio is true, but that's kind of giving it too much credit. Any sequence taking the sum of the previous 2 terms as the next term will produce the Golden Ratio. In my opinion, the Lucas sequence is most intimately associated with φ, as the Nth term of the sequence = φ^N (rounded). (Incidentally, the Lucas sequence also follows the " taking the sum of the previous 2 terms as the next term" rule, starting with 1 and 3.)
2. Fibonacci numbers do turn up in nature, but the extent to which that is the case is usually exagerated.
3. I don't know of any study that claims that the Golden Rectangle is the most appealing. I think it's just that everyone agrees with it being "perfect".
mathematician here, the ratio is cool, but the """fact""" that golden rectangles are objectively beautiful is doubtful and more a matter of psychology than mathematics. its just a very commonly spread "pop math" thing
After a bit of research, I found the flag in 8:33. It's like I already suspected a Prussian regimental flag, specifically of the 32nd Infantry Regiment from Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen, a small principality in the south-west of Germany, nowadays in the province of Baden-Württemberg.
I could see the black-white-black prussian flag in there.
The whole thing is probably a result of the Württemberg line of the Hohenzollern house.
That was a thing in those days: every regiment had its own flag (or at least unique color variation). Something for the vexillologists...
Something I thought of was the symbol in the corners. It looks like the emblem on the San Marino flag!

"I've never seen a nation go through this many flags in such a small time"
America: hold my beer

Key words there being "in such a small time." 27 (I think) in 246 years is an awful lot better than 19 in around 100 years, especially when there were like 7 in the same year. Plus, the USA's flag is pretty consistent in its design, with the only changes being a star added (or multiple stars at once in the earlier years). Afghanistan just does whatever the hell it wants for no reason, and it's dumb.
“Why does the US have to be different?”
*proceeds to show literally every country being different*
"I've never seen a nation go through this many flags"
America: Allow us to introduce ourselves
Afghanistan: *changes flag again*
For once I'm defending America: at least it's fairly consistent, with the only change being the start field. Also, fun fact, US flag code states that it is always perfectly acceptable to fly any previous flag as though it were the current one.
Afghanistan changes their flag for unknown reasons like their recent change sucks
*Let me reintroduce myself* (I thought of the Gemini commercial when I saw your comment)

Togo's flag ratio makes the most sense. It says that the flag must follow the golden ratio. That's more or less what many other countries (3:5, 5:8, etc.) are trying to emulate. But Togo was smart enough to basically just say: "Yeah, we follow the golden ratio. Period." - I think that's clever.
It's hard to draw golden ratio by hand on a paper doe
thats right the proportion of togos flag is 1:1,61...
🇹🇬
@@aliersinoral no, it's very easy. First you draw a square, then with the compass you point at the medium point of the square base and to the up right angle. The interception between the line that continues from the square base and the compass line is the golden ratio
