I wonder if it's like sking down the back side of a mountain into a deep valley at the end of a perfect powder day: each turn is better than the one before, and you can't find an excuse to stop, even though you know you have to walk back up...
Yeah, reminds me of Kieth Jarrett's The Köln Concert, down to the vocal additions on top of the piano improv. I'm glad this made it to the internet, absolutely incredible.
Good grief, Picard's right hand is just explosive with percussiveness. Legend has it that drummers refuse to play in combos with Picard for fear of their rhythm seeming slopping compared to his.
How Jacob's face was so welcoming when Aimee asked to sing with him :") 56:55 It's crazy how he is so patient even though he just gave so much of his energy...Truly one of a kind😺
I don't know how many times I've checked back into this clip, studying tiny phrases over and over and marveling at the collaborative genius between Jacob and Mathis. We have here a post-doctoral course in collective improvisation in a single hour. Mathis is new to me here, but I've been following Jacob for five years since I stumbled on his Looper demo and recommending his work to every fellow musician I meet. Listen to JC's turnaround at the end of the bridge of "Body and Soul" at 25:57. His descending left hand underlines a modulation from C through Db/B, Gb/Bb and Bb7 to the chorus's last 8 in Db. It's classical in quality, and happens so smoothly under Mathis' playful upper voice it makes the head swim. Enough pseudo-critic's chordal analysis. If you've not experienced the entire clip, take it in sections, realizing that all the communication happened through music, not words. There's a lesson here for all of us.
And as a comprehension check to see if everyone got the lesson, here's a multiple choice quiz. Choose the correct statement from among the following: 1. Music is good. 2. Music is fun. 3. Music involves love and sometimes laughter. 4. Jazz rocks!! 5. One cannot be blamed and booed for inwardly responding to this video in this way: "Play that fawnky music white boys!"

Consider how easily language comes out of you to express thoughts. You don't have to consider the construction of individual words as you're speaking them, you likely hardly have to consider the construction of your typical sentence. You've put in a ton of time nailing down each of those aspects of language via Hooked on Phonics and grammar lessons for your entire development, so now all you really have to think about is the intent behind the sentence, what idea you're trying to communicate. These guys have put in those kinds of hours towards mastering connecting notes into chords or melodic fragments (like connecting phonemes into words) by practicing scales and arpeggios, and connecting chords and melodic fragments into phrases (words into sentences) by studying the grammar of music: studying and practicing harmonic progression, voice leading, melodic antecedent/consequent structure, and just actively listening to a ton of people "speak" music who are not only fluent, but incredibly eloquent in this language of the emotions. It really is like learning a language, but a little more like learning 50 languages, given how wildly varied musical genres can be, but perhaps 50 Romance languages, given how much overlap there is in the ideas that underpin most Western genres.
@@Pizzastealingninja I don't even know how to put my thoughts in words! So that analogy wouldn't work for me! Some people are just gifted to get to this level. I'll just be playing my simple chords! This is my first comment on RUclips. I came to say thanks, Aimee. This is freaking magical. Also came to encourage people to go out and be a part of the live music scene. It's so critical to connect with musicians and the community to grow. Especially at the Blue Note where it seems like stuff like this happens all the time: my last visit to it was to see Herbie and Chick do a duet set, which was bonkers. Stayed after hours and saw Cory Henry in an impromptu duet with some college kid doing a late night set. And everyone was nice. Watch live music like your musical life depends on it (I think it does).

Body & Soul btw is an absolute beast, and great to see how Pickard inspires Jacob to REALLY SWING (at 30:00), even though Pickard is articulating and pulsating more than Jacob, looser wrists, plunging etc. - truly a feast to watch these two geniuses make it all work, always thinking ahead, surprising and delighting one another.
Top notch camera work too, Aimee, facial expressions and various angles, very steady, great sound quality as well; all makes for a very rich viewing experience, thanks!
Noah this is really late, but I’m gonna have to disagree with you. As a singer and a pianist myself, I find Jacob’s singing to be good, but not extraordinary. Even if he doesn’t have the best classical training, his knowledge of theory and the depth of the way he knows his way around the piano is virtuosic.
I’m glad to have found this video. I met Picard in person at one of his shows and he was nice enough to write out a chord sheet for me since I was just beginning as a jazz pianist.
I am still watching this, and never have I seen anything like this before. Thank you so much, Aimee, for capturing this incredible and spontaneous conversation between two music geniuses.
Can't believe i'm just stumbling across this now. This had me so emotionally excited listening that I put in headphones and went for a run while listening

oh my god this is too amazing. When I see videos like this I remember why the world is so beautiful. Love you so much Aimee, thanks for bringing this to the world
Absolutely mindblowing! Can't believe this has actually happened. A towering, virtually limitless (neither by narrative joy nor by virtousity) musical conversation. The reinvention of a four-hand-version of the "Köln Concert" plus a very nice vocalise at the end. And the most amazing thing is that around it, nobody seemed to care much. Crazy...
What a complete delight. I couldn't stop smiling for an hour! Thank you for working up the courage to go back inside that night to make a request. What a gift to all of us! I am amazed at what humans are capable of. I'm definitely inspired me to dig more deeply into my piano craft. I have plateaued and it is time to move forward again! Blessings..
Ugh everything about this is so amazing. My favourite part of the whole video is starting at 19:33 ish Mathis quote's Debussy's Claire de Lune, and then at around 19:44 Jacob quotes it as well. That moment just really blew me away. They both clearly have so much knowledge, and they also just groove so well together!
As someone who recently discovered Jacob and someone who's known of you for a while the ending of the video of you and jacob makes me smile so much. I literally cannot stop smiling at the two of you. Having such good fun as musicians and completely enjoying each other's presence and being in the moment. There's something so touching and beautiful about it.
Honestly the magic that happens between like 48:00 and 50:20 when they switch and start playing the rendition of that familiar song (What song is that, it's killing me). THAT IS POWERFUL. You can see Jacob start to smile and sing. It really came back to life right there 😭☺️😊

Also there's a great music venue called Phyllis' on wood and division that might be having some great music tonight. Are you performing anywhere else in Chicago during your visit? Thanks for reaching out and have a great vacation with your family it looks super fun. I'm taking the four boys and my wife to New Hampshire on a road trip in about two weeks. The boys are all under 5 so I'm a little bit nervous but very excited. Really, less than 4,000 people in the WORLD "Liked" this slice of jazz improvisation history? Don't worry, gentlemen, each of our 4,000 votes counts for ten-thousand points in real appreciation.
Yes, but millions of people will watch it in the "Jacob-Collier-Archives" (this huge and very colourfull building in the shape of a croc in the North of London) and study it closely.
I really enjoyed the take on Human Nature at the start. Thanks for videos like this. I had no idea who Jacob Collier was before your videos pointed me at him, and now I don't understand why he has so few subscribers on youtube. It's so awesome that you're able to capture something like this.

Two humans who have mastered/perfected the first human language: music. Imagine if we could all speak to each other like this...
It would be amazing...
so awesome you got this on video - wowzers!
Thanks Aimee! You make the net a better place! Thanks for sharing.
An hour of this?!
This is great, you can just put it on in the background and you'll never have to worry about it ending!
Mathis played with my school band for a concert. It was fantastic.
Aimee, hearing this jam would not have been as intensely edifying and gratifying if not for your camera angle. Thank you so much for this awesome register of an incredible hour and for sharing it.
It's a Saturday morning - guess I'll watch this video again for the 500th time...
You might have caught up with me. :-)
No words....Amazing that you got this!
This two dudes jazz it, man! Jacob's left hand kills!
What a great Valentine's gift. Love it. Insanely tantalizing!
This is unreal!!!!!! Thanks Aimee......how lucky you were to see it live!
+Christopher Thorp did I meet your friend Ty last night, Dr? Pretty sure I did! Oh my gosh look at you on that single ski, throwing a rooster tail on that left cut!! Makes me wish I was on the lake with my old O'Brien. ;)
Aimee Nolte Music: oh my gosh Ty went to see you. Where were you performing? I am sad I missed it. I enjoyed your video with Rick. Wow you do everything... slalom skier as well! I should've figured that watching your proficiency on your skateboarding videos. It's one of the joys of my life unfortunately at 51 I can't carve the way I used to. I'm sure your family is very busy in Chicago but if you find yourself in the Wicker Park area please come by to play my century old parlor grand Steinway I just inherited from my father. It was the piano I learned on and it needs a wonderful tickling from a musician like yourself. BTW, I'm the guy with the triplets who requested Little Mermaid under the sea awhile back....Meyer was excited to here you play it live.
This may be spoilers to those who haven't fully watched it yet but... At the 26:10 mark, Mathis sheds a tear. So beautiful
That's just sweat.
This is a journey. Cheers!
Wow! You are some scary musicians that was awesome, first it was like Keith Jarrett had 2 sons, then it was like Bobby McFerrin's niece and nephew took over. Thank you so much for this all of you and thank you Aimee for all your wonderful contributions to youtube, If I wasn't broke I would definately donate. Those of you that can donate please do. Encourage Aimee to continue to share her wealth of knowledge. Astounding! Bravo!
I literally got chills I look up to u guys
Gosh I am really blown away by Jacob's technique.. To be young again! :)
I feel so blessed to have seen this virtuoso improvisational performance from two gifted performers. Wow?! Incredible. 😲😳😂
I love how the interruption from the bar guy completely fails to phase either of them
Thank you so much, Aimee for making this happen. Very courageous of you to go back in.
Sid
wow I was wide eyed and jaw dropped for an entire hour. that was actually shocking.
Really, less than 4,000 people in the WORLD "Liked" this slice of jazz improvisation history? Don't worry, gentlemen, each of our 4,000 votes counts for ten-thousand points in real appreciation.
Yes, but millions of people will watch it in the "Jacob-Collier-Archives" (this huge and very colourfull building in the shape of a croc in the North of London) and study it closely.
dope dope dope!!! That's all i can say!
I loved all of this!
Thanks for recording this for us! it was 🔥🔥🔥
I really enjoyed the take on Human Nature at the start. Thanks for videos like this. I had no idea who Jacob Collier was before your videos pointed me at him, and now I don't understand why he has so few subscribers on youtube. It's so awesome that you're able to capture something like this.
They just spit out a million substantial song ideas in 1 hour
Epic!! Thanks Aimee for this. Yo creo que ya es hora de comenzar a usar la clasificación de "Jacob Jazz" para este tipo de videos, que yo pienso, van a quedar en la historia de youtube.
how are these cats not tripping over each other and playing the wrong stuff?? amazing!
really inspiring. insane level of musicianship
That smile Mathis !!!
