For those tempted to get a parrot, be aware that it’s not all fun and games. Parrots are more challenging to keep than a cat or dog. Parrots have an innate need to chew. And of course to fly. Their wings can be clipped, but that seems cruel. Obviously ceiling fans can never be on, but then they are a tempting place to perch on. And to chew. But probably the worst thing is they cannot be house trained. So be prepared for droppings on that fan blade, on your shoulder, etc, etc. Finally, feed them millet only as a treat.
Macaws can live to 150, Parrots, 100, Cockatoos 100. The smaller birds live shorter lives. The larger birds, Parrots and up, are so intelligent, they must live in a stimulating environment or they go insane, or if given the opportunity, they will chew up anything and everything they can find.
Please keep spreading this awareness. It literally breaks my heart seeing a bird "crippled" in these ways. We desperately need to stop breeding in captivity & giving the remaining birds (we've crippled) the best lives possible. Nothing is more beautiful than when they get to be together in nature, as intended. Even if they're more in danger in their natural ecosystems, that's the way they were created to live!!!!
I used to think I wanted one till my Mom got an Eclectus - there were some good moments but 😱 I quickly realized that its not for me. They demand a lot of time, attention, care, and finances. Parrots and toddlers share the same emotional and cognitive intelligence, a parrot is like having a toddler for decades.
I had two budgies whom I talked to a lot but when I went overseas for a year a friend of mine took care of them and would you believe it one day she secretly recorded them while at work, and sure enough they were both talking when no one was around.

@@sezwo5774 I agree completely. After hand raising our parrot and having her for 23 years before she passed, I never recommend anyone getting a bird. They are the most awesome creatures but I don’t think most people understand the responsibility and that they live so long that they will always fit into their lives. Plus they can be very loud, destructive and their cages require a lot of cleaning.
3:02 My cockatiels did this *EVERYTIME* I let them out their cage and into our rooms They flew to the next and nearest newspaper and started pecking off stripes to put into their own feathers
Friends of mind had 2 parakeets and so far as they knew, they didn't talk at all. But while visiting, I noticed something they never had. While we were in the kitchen with the parakeets, they remained mostly silent. But after we left the room, one of them imitated the cadence and pitches of the entire conversation. You couldn't hear words, but you could clearly tell it was a bird song version of the conversation because you would hear packages of chirps at one pitch, then a pause and then packages of chirps at another town. You would even hear the general inflection like when a question was asked.

FYI BIRDS - some need obsessive constant attention or are clingy. like cockatiels. then you get bigger birds like cockatoos and they are like having a toddler and they need a LOT of interaction and enrichment. the other thing is small birds go to the bathroom a LOT. so it's not as easy as just having them on your shoulder all the time. you often have to wear a shirt or bib that can be crapped on. and if you are not good with repetitive noises... you might think again. lovebirds aren't always so bad with that. and finches are a little repetitive but sound like their own little circus, very cute. just know it's a TIME INVESTMENT. you have to go out of your way to give attention, it's not so easy as passive attention with a dog or cat, usually. also, NO CANDLES, NO FAKE SCENTS, CAREFUL WITH COOKWARE (like PFOA and stuff in teflon.). their lungs are REALLY sensitive and you can make them sick or die. (it's not actually great for people either.) that said, birds can be rewarding pets. know the breed, though. for decibels of sound, for behavior, for neediness, for food needs (like fresh vs just seed.)
