Vimalakirti Sutra, New Delhi, India, 16 -17 March 2018
The story starts with the wealthy merchant, Vimalakirti, falling ill and surrounded by visitors. The Buddha being one of his friends and teacher, has asked his disciples to check up on him. Vimalakirti’s sickness points to the quintessential wisdom of the sutra. We tend to look down on emotions and the volatile mind, seeing defilements as a problem and the path as a solution. How often do we hear of “mind training”? But according to Vimalakirti, having defilements is equal to having wisdom. Just as the lotus grows in muddy water, the Buddha mind is found in the muddied mind. Only when a person is liberated from the idea of virtue and not virtue, only then can a person renounce.
