I had to replay the first story to understand. Marin's understudy was not hurt. Jeanie understudied both Marin (Woman 3) and Shelley (Woman 1). In Chicago, Jeanie started Act 1 as Woman 3 and Shelley played her regular Woman 1. Once Shelley was hurt and out, Jeanie (u/s) had to switch to Shelley's track as Woman 1 and Marin had to replace Jeanie as Woman 3. Beautiful end to the story.
