- Formula 1 Test Days at Brands Hatch in 1986 A 'stella' Year for Formula 1 and the Awesome 'Turbo' Cars. This was the last Year Formula 1 Cars raced in anger at the Great Brands Hatch G.P. Venue.Cars and Drivers on View in this Video include Nigel Mansell Williams FW11/Honda Nelson Piquet also in the Williams, The Legend Ayrton Senna in the Lotus 98/T plus Prost, Rosberg, Brundle, Laffite, Johansson, Fabi.
There’s just something so amazing about the sounds these 80s turbo f1 cars make. There’s such a unique sound you get from upshifts downshifts from a manual box, with the sound sound of the backfires caused by the belching flames out the back.
To me this was the golden age of F1. I can remember some great scraps between Piquet, Mansell, Prost, Senna, Berger just awesome, that's when they were allowed to race
Fully agree Chris, was a golden Era for sure....cheers Barry
The background voice in plain british accent makes this video even more delightful to watch ! RIP De Angelis, Senna , Alboreto, De Cesaris , Streiff , Dumfries , Tambay, & Sir Frank Williams.
love the bark of a Honda turbo...totally awesome
Thanks for posting these Barry, you were so lucky to be there and so forward thinking to record it all! The 86/ 87 Williams had to be one of the greatest cars ever.
God I can remember the smell of these cars watching this, good memories.
Same. The smell hanging in the air was the stand-out thing for me down at Dingle Dell as a 9year old. Pops/bangs crackles & suitably loud as well. Had me hooked immediately. So much better than the nonsense today. Great to reminisce!
This is priceless footage taken from great vantage points. Thank you for sharing! 😉👍
Fantastic upload. As a 6 year old I fell in love with that beautiful Williams. Remember the whole family watching the Australian GP in dismay as Nigel’s tyre let go. Loved the rawness of this era, and of course brilliant Brands.
Better than now by far
Most beautiful F1 cars as a whole during this period of 85-87.
Even the Tyrell looked beautiful.
All the cars of 1986 were good looking
Going on my personal taste in F1 car design I would say that the cars from 1985-1994 were the most beautiful (especially the Ferrari's from 1989 and 1990 which, in my opinion, are THE most beautiful F1 cars of all time. They are aesthetically perfect. Even the MOMA in NYC has one on display which says a lot about how good a car looks if an art museum displays it). After 1994 aero started to really change with pace, combine that with the awful grooved tyres and reduced car width and it spelt the end of the aesthetically pure F1 car design.
Though I must say that the cars from the mid 60s were gorgeous too, especially the Ferrari 312 with the white exhausts. That Ferrari 312 from 1967 is my second favourite F1 car in terms of pure beauty.
I agree, for me 'Data General' sounds so cool and really techy!
I was 8 when this was filmed and it proves that yes indeed the cars were mental and the drivers fearless . It really is better than I remember . Thanks Barry great watch
Thanks, sure was a golden era in F1......glad you enjoyed the footage.......Regards Barry
Really special footage. I was born the year after this video was captured so missed out on seeing this era first hand, but my F1 soul definitely lies in the late 80s/early 90s. That McLaren is on the absolute limit at the end of the clip, using every inch of the track and more, absolutely breathtaking.
98daviesm Its good that current F1 fans who were not around at the time of the Turbo cars get a chance to see what it was like trackside.....its was a very special era in F1, I wish we could go back to that kind of racing now.....1000hp flame spitting, race cars, raced flat out by the best drivers.......thanks for your comments and im glad you enjoyed the video.....Regards Barry
Amazing footage👏
Brands Hatch really takes some balls of steel 🤯
It took balls of steel to get in one of those Turbo cars at any circuit!..........Cheers Barry
I was there! Great times. Back then wonderful circuits like Brands Hatch were taken for granted. F1 was truly the pinnacle, in every way. Not so now, unfortunately.
Hey, I was there too, how lucky were we!!!
Michael Hill
What cars they were, and Brands too! I was there when Mansell won the European GP and the British the following year. Never forget the visceral assault of F1 in those days.
the best f1 upload ever , it shows the real speed of the cars, the 80s turbo era will never be surpassed . brands hatch has to be the best circuit with lots of different elevation changes.the fw11 are awesome also the b186 sounds just mad. thanks for the video
Thank You for you comment Robin.......I am particularly pleased with your comment because I wanted my Video to show exactly what speed and sound of the 'Turbo Era' was like.......and of course being driven by some of the Legends' of the sport......many thanks......if you look on my page there are a couple of earlier videos of the turbo cars from Brands 84 & 85 Regards Barry
Barry Price just as boxing had its golden era with Ali , Fraser an Foreman , f1 will never ever have drivers like Senna, Prost , Mansell an Piquet . Todays teams , cars an drivers all have no character ! f1 has been in decline for 2 decades now. thanks for the other videos
Hi Robin........Yes I couldn't agree with you more, I consider myself very lucky to have watched and filmed 'The Best' in F1...........Those Turbo cars were very quick and made a great sound and had the Legends of the sport driving them......its very watered down these days in comparison.......Cheers Bazza
ROBIN BANKS
As I already commented on the 1985 video, I was also here for this testing day, great memories.
Thanks W42PZ......yes the Turbo era really was in 'Full Swing' ans the cars were just so powerful, and fast....cheers Barry
I was there. These drivers were my heroes.
Thank you Mr Price. First time I have seen footage of this day. I was there as a Marshall, post inside of Druids hairpin. Had Pironi spin in front of me and as we stepped out to help, he booted it and spun the car around leaving us on trackside like lemons! Tambays first try in the Ferrari after the loss of Villeneuve.
Sorry pal but what you have described happened in 1982, this video is 1986, just saying.
Now these are proper Turbo F1 cars, the V6s in these sound amazing and so does the 4 cylinder BMW Turbo engines. Ten times Better than the computer animated sounding V6 hybrids vacuums of today
Barry Wall.
Thank you for a wonderful fly on the wall experience of '86 Brands Hatch!
Stunning footage of some big drivers in a natural racers habitat!
Sounds are sensational and hat tip for no commentary!
Sincerely
Matt
Just hearing track stadium announcer!
Sensational
This is an epic production
Take a bow!
6:39 that looked like an 85 FW10 but with Cannon sponsers on the rear wings.
It is indeed a FW10. Was it from another earlier test?
Great footage. You forget how brutal these cars were!
Professor Prost, Piquet Major, hungry Lion Mansell, vice champion Alboreto, , young Wizard Senna, old BH, beautiful weather, and young mothers, walking under the roar of thousand-horsepower engines.
A typical day in the glorious eighties.
I'm from the USSR, I was 10 years old at the time, and I only saw it in a photo in the Hungarian magazine Kepes Sport. Before the transactions on Russian TV for another 6 years. Спасибо.
glad the world changed for you mate :) do you still watch the races
Brilliant F1 vid! Really gives the impression of speed and takes me right back to '86. Thanks for posting. :-)
Glad you enjoyed the footage Peter............Regards Barry
Thank you so much Mr. Price! I spent many seasons at Watkin's Glen & Mosport watching F1 in the 70's (college age) and them again in Montreal in the early 90's where I got to see The Michael in action. You could get right up to track then and into the garages as well. But I missed the 80's so I feel fortunate that so many youtubers have posted these events! Than you, thank you. This is absolutely how the TV producers of today should televise racing of all forms instead of the lame long camera lenses, with non stop commentary (although I could listen to Murray Walker & James Hunt all day). This sport is all about speed, bravery and LOUD sound. Modern TV has missed the mark and they can take a lesson from your sort of filming!
Great to hear Nelson being the only car to use 1st round Druids- everyone else in 2nd by the sounds of it !! 💪🏼💪🏼
Great filming Barry. I was watching that day as well. you brought back so many memories. Thanks.
Thanks Ben, glad you enjoyed the Footage from Brands.....regards Barry
This is possibly the test where Keke Rosberg worked with john Barnard to 'dial out' the understeer on the McLaren and for the first time Rosberg was quicker than Prost.
If Barnard bothered do fix the understeer Keke Rosberg would have won a GP in 1986'. He had a very specific driving style where he would just throw the car into a corner and let the back follow. John Barnard didn't like him because they were completely different. Keke was a loose party boy and Barnard is a typical boring posh brit. Keke said the first time his car worked properly to his liking was at the last race of the season. And guess what? He led the race by a mile until his tyre gave out. Keke was my favorite driver of the era. Underrated and always on the raged edge. I wish he stayed in Williams for 1986 he would have won the championship easily instead of making a mess of it like Mansell. I consider him to be the fastest driver in F1 from 83' until 85'. What a shame we couldn't see more of him. He never had the best car in his career and Mclaren that Prost won the title with was showing its age and brilliant as Prost was he only won because Piquet and Mansell were behaving like children that season...
seeing senna in the lotus i was about to literally cry. watching the movie with my sister that knows nothing about f1 or senna she was crying right along with me lol i wish i was able to meet him
I was at the Canadian GP that year, the turbo era.
Remembering the black soot roster tail from the rich mixture so detonation would not destroy the 1.5 liter engine putting out 1300 HP!
1986 the Greatest year in Car Motorsport History, limitless turbo F1 and Group B Rally.
"glorious, Glorious, GLORIOUS"
+Anthony Kernich Thanks Anthony........regards Barry
+Barry Price no worries!
Fantastic!!
Lanky Turtle Thanks Lanky.....Awesome cars and drivers!
11:37 that ferrari looks very cool
Wow.
Piquet was so aggressive in that Williams honda they were also experimenting with variable geometry turbos at that test they were so loud
just 4 months after the Frank Williams incident near Paul Ricard with his Ford Sierra 1600...
Today's F1 looks ridiculously boring compared with this. How is it that I'm still watching races...
Yes I wonder how the likes of Hamilton and Verstappen would have got on racing in these Turbo cars of the 80's against the likes of Mansell Senna Prost Piquet and Berger
What a great sound these old turbos make. For me not quite as a good as the screaming normally aspirated V10's from the early 2000's but way better than the current cars. They look so damn good as well.
The real V6 turbo F1
What amazing sounds and so different look every of these cars had, I like McLren Porsche turbo sound.
I like the Tyrrells and the BenettonBMWs.
+sereno353 me too !!...It sounds like the roar of a dragon !!
My God!!...Only the best pilots in its heyday!!...Any of theses would now f1 champions !!...true myths!!
+Ernival Jota Yes all 'Legends' of F1 in this Video......on a 'Classic GP Circuit'...........cheers Barry
Barry Price it's true!!...Have a nice day !!
Really great video!
Thnaks GDH, glad you enjoyed the footage..........Regards Barry
Back when people aint whinging about the sound of the cars!
Interesting 6:38 Mansell went out in the FW10, this was 1986
0:36 almost had a big problem after bumping the curbstone, lol. Close call.
I thinks that's the 1985 Williams at 6.37 though... ;-)
Peter Oxley yes it is, any idea why?
Peter Oxley great spot
Drs, power unit, electronic gear shift? 🤪
Takes me back I can all most smell it ...
Rawww powerr
+falkenkid14 and Rawww SPEED!
Sorry comment was for the 1982 footage.
Some guy once said that the fw11 threw out 1800 hp at brands hatch.. he talked about qualifications i think.. I don't know how true that is though
Yes mansell,senna,prost,lauda,piquet,rosberg
Isnt there a Benetton perhaps the on of Berger?
+Nino Schier Yes Fabi and Berger both in the Benetton in '86'
@@BarryPrice1959 Those car were suprisingly fast for a couple of years
I still can't get my head round the line into Paddock : it seems like aim for the barrier and then at the very last moment turn right.
Hi Ryan, yes several lines into Paddock bend but the fast line was just as you have explained, not for the faint of heart to drive a 'Turbo' car at the barrier and turn in at the last second into a bend like 'Paddock Hill' but they were special drivers back in the day.....pretty spectacular for the spectators too...........Regards Barry
And these guys didn't think twice about doing it! Can't imagine this corner existing in this state in the present era. It did almost kill Lafitte later in the year at the British GP.......
Even scarier is Rosberg hanging it out to the edge at Clearways
Nigel est celui qui passe le plus fort dans les courbes
I was only 6 at the last f1 race @brands
Well Dan atleast you can see some of the great era's in F1 and some of the 'legends' of the sport in action.....Cheers Barry
François Cevert !
with wich camera did you film?
Peteson1982 I had a Sony Trinitron with a Betamax tape unit.......dragged it all over the place....it was one of the best cameras at the time, but when you see what is on offer now days......well I wish the modern Hd cameras were around in the 80's..........Cheers Barry
Great stuff! I´ve got the same camera still at home. I connected it to my panasonic dvd/harddisc-recorder and now I can record things happening at home digitally. Have you got other stuff from Brands Hatch? Looking for FF1600 1986 Festival
Hondaaaaaaa!!!!!!
The McLaren looks sooo much slower than the Williams. Lol
Think williams had 1200 hp. Qualy trim!!
You know how you can tell this is a test? Cigarette sponsorship on the cars.
You know how you can tell they are real race cars? Cigarette Sponsorships
I don't get it..
cigarette sponsorship was totally normal back in those days... even cigarette tv commercials were normal
NoNameLeft1500 they weren’t allowed to run cigarette sponsorship in Britain by that time. I guess exceptions were made for the tests.
peut etre qu un v8 aura raison d un chassis tout carbone qui ne donne plus d emotion à qui que ce soit ???
When men were men and drivers didn't have to be politically correct (pre-Schumacher!).
