The last vet said it so well,"it's amazing what a simple thank you means" that all these heroes want, a heart felt thank you. They deserve so much more.
whenever the veterans of the USA and Canada came to the Netherlands they never got a simple "thank you"... they received whole parades as thanks. Also from the younger generations that haven't been through WWII. But because of them we regained the freedom that we held dear. Seeing the veterans of those days all old now, some in wheelchairs always gives a feeling i cant quite explain. Sadly each year the number dwindles. I remember when i was 16 and the veterans still marched through the city (Wageningen). I loved watching the true story with this realistic enactment .... I’m a retired MWO Canadian forces ....I’ll recommend all my friends to watch this...I hope these soldiers take this training and experience back to the troops...thanks again.
I'm watching this series due to go into the US Navy. This puts into perspective not just the reality of war, but throws into sharp relief that which those before us have achieved through sweat and blood. Our liberties in the free world are taken for granted. These men of the American and Canadian Armed forces were and are worthy of our respect, admiration, and honors beyond bits of colored ribbon. So I thank you, for every day we have drawn free breath in our world.
This should be required viewing by every US and Canadian high school student. Freedom isn’t free, but we’ve forsaken that in favor of placating the feelings of selfish people who find no value in standing, much less sacrificing for what is true and right.
I served my country and I will defend this land as well, against any enemy, if it is required, as I sworn when I became a proud American Citizen, I really appreciate their sacrifice, I've lost some friends too, I know what it takes. R.I.P warriors.
What is this water running down my face at the end of the episode... God damnit. (Both my great grandparents where in ww2, One was Airborne 101st, One served in the navy, pacific theatre.) So this hits hard. Both passed, 1 in 2015 and the other in 2018.
Having served in two wars, I believe I am justified in saying there are no 'winners' in wars -- only survivors. Even worse, civilians are often the ones who suffer the most. Would I do it all again? Yes, in a heartbeat because I took an oath to defend the Constitution and the Country both of which I love. I didn't say "Except for...." The US military doesn't make policy...we are an instrument of policy and carry it out. When it was time to go, I was sad about leaving my family and friends but I did what I had to do. God Bless America! Semper Fidelis! CWO4 USMCR [Ret] 17 February 1969 - 1 August 2004.
My Grand Dad was 5th Army attached to HQ as an orderly or Aid. He drove the brass around, cooked for officers Etc. At the bulge he was one of the rear echelon guys handed a grand and sent to the front. Asked him what his reaction was getting his draft notice, he said, "I thought we were gonna have a ball"!! As he mimicked throwing out a pitch at a baseball game.
Shame, after all of the build-up and hard work the guys put themselves through to get there. I felt the final assault on the hill was basically a shits and giggles re-enactment. Nevertheless, the doco educated me a little more on the Devil's Brigade, and it's always nice hearing those Garrand clips.
Amazing to see a little more of what our grandparents were able to endure. Not surprising that learned, experienced, trained professionals felt like they were back at boot camp, or that the final battle felt real. Glad noone snapped and used a knife. Glad they got to see italy, and to pay their respects. Anyone else want a "free" trip to italy? Wow.

This is i am glad to say not the first of a special forces group. Years before, a group that formed the comandos of Gt.Briton also did what was impossible, they crippled a dry dock in France making it impossible to use for the rest of the war by raming it with a small ship filled with explosives, destroying the pump house plus a load more, so with regards to special operations there have been men of this calibra. We should remember them all and when i say we i mean the world, there was no one country who did any better than any other when it came to having brave men, the same goes for today.
“You’d be surprised what a simple thank you means” that hit deep, and sadly these courageous veterans of WW2 are quickly passing and I believe only about 300,000 remain. So remember the words that man spoke and if you see a WW2 veteran, be sure to say thank you
