- www.newmexicopb... - Look in any direction in New Mexico and you can find mountains that have blown their tops, rare maar volcanoes, cinder cones, lava flows and our very own super volcanoes. New Mexicos volcanoes have been decorating New Mexicos landscape for millions of years. In this COLORES! we see and learn about breathtaking examples of volcanism that span the state. But volcanoes have created more than stunning terrain. Over time, they planted the seeds of civilization and shaped the identity of New Mexico and its people. In this documentary we meet Native Americans who share their views of New Mexicos volcanoes and we meet the experts who help us better understand these geological marvels. Experts also consider the big question, when will these sleeping monsters come to life again? Welcome to the volcano state.

What I find fascinating is early humans didn't waste their time going to a 9-5 job, or other such trivia. They were tied to the land and built their homes out of caves and farmed. I bet they didn't need therapists!
Your on point with one
Yeah, who needs a warm bed, food, and peaceful of mind.
@@charlesrichter3854while the lifespan has gone up, that doesn’t mean people only lived to 30-40. Since death in infancy was incredibly common in these times, it absolutely impacts the “average life span”.
@@jeebusyaweirdo3733there is no proof in what you just said. Man’s dating method is flawed. Don’t believe everything scholars say because it will only be debunked in the future as it has been happening today.
@@troydhansen4990what do you mean? People didn’t have warm beds and peace of mind back then? They actually lived content and happy with absolutely no worries. Now days people stress for material things and to flip a light switch. For millions of years humans lived content until these last 1000 years when this world followed European ways of greed and wealth.
Thank goodness for Diane Souder! She helped make the Petroglyph Park a National Monument in 1990!!!
This is the 3rd or 4th time I've watched this short clip and it never ceases to amaze me. I always forward this clip to friends when we talk about volcanoes.
Former Philmont staffer here. A great story from several decades ago was when a couple off duty staffers rolled several tires into the crater of Capulan volcano and lit them on fire just before sunrise so that everyone awoke thinking there was an eruption.
I have heard of that. I think it was foolish. Yet! Our Volcanoes, likely a few I believe should go off. Wake people up! Truly. I have said it, & Said it, yet most don't care, cause they are so foolish. Black Mountain and others here are ACTIVE! No such thing as "dead".. That is Not True. Yet I have proof in many ways. Yet others Ignore. When Black Mountain goes off. I won't tell. Since Everyone can't wake up & listen! They wanna lie.
My great grandfather was a Philmont man as well and I remember him telling the same story.
I always remember the pleasure I had of looking at the siluette of Capulan from Cimarron and from our camp on Uracca Mesa..
Walked around Capulan many times. Love Cimarron canyon, Ute Park is my heaven.
I am interested to know that at this time, 2023, if we have more detailed information about these Volcanos and....the period when they were erupting can be tied into other Volcanic events in the Western USA over a period of 100 million years, Wrangelia/Insular Super terrane docking or Silietzia terrane docking at 50 million years ago?
Would you like green or red chile? Answer: magma
While eruptions in NM are unlikely to happen in my lifetime, I surely wish that the mantle and crust were was not as thin as one geologist
claimed they are here on the local NM news.
He said there's something like 120 volcanic plugs in NM and that quakes as far away as
Japan could one day trigger eruptions here.
But another recent report from Univ NM said
the chances for an eruption in the Belen
Socorro area are ~ 1% in 100 years and
10% in 1000 years. So I guess I'm okay-except that the same study says that NM is "planning" for the 7.0 quake they expect will hit ABQ in the not too distant future. And Los Lunas was on
my short list for retirement, at least if it's
economy improves and diversifies in the next
few years.
😅
GREEN CHILE CHICKEN ENCHILADA'S BUT THEN ASADO MADE WITH RED CHILE!!!

It would be great if this could be re-uploaded in higher definition.
Man is so puny! But his mind is glorious! And it's all due to his surroundings! We really do come from the ground.
Wonderful~!
Nice Memories Of My Youth In The Land Of Enchantment
Damn, I knew New Mexico had a volcanic history, but not such a variety nor recent volcanic history!
I hate to imagine the media circus if a Hawaiian like lava flow occures.
I parish the thought if a Toba type of eruption occurs!
I just hope Grant County, NM isn't at risk for such eruptions, or else I don't think there will be any sinkhole and flood zone safe place for me to build my retirement home anywhere in the Land of Enchantment.
Beautiful Mountains in New Mexico. Thank you.
We’ve lived here for 6 months now and loving it more every day. This geology is so interesting.
Cheap dirk!
@Derrick Bridges Show some Respect. Or Leave! Ur Rude..
I am a trucker. I have driven Across the entire state and always knew that almost everything had volcanic features. I grew up in shiprock so I could tell where all of the lava looking rocks are and they are everywhere. Thx for video
Dang, I never knew that...
Home video!!!!??? I'm calling now and ordering three!!!😅
I came across this by accident and im glad I did, new Mexico has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Lies lies lies those hills are ruins of petrified giant wood stumps
That moment when you realize that you live next door to 2 Super volcanos, not 1.
BETWEEN 2 Super volcanos, not 1, 'between.'
Go Aves...
Danny Are you in NM then?
No, I live in Colorado. You were close though so good job. :)
I live by My. Taylor. Laguna Pueblo.
I’m close to shipock I live in Farmington New Mexico
No. Cortez, Colorado is closer. And more scenic view. Cortez connect to Shiprock.
I like waffles
That was AMAZING!!! I'm from Gallup, now in New Orleans. I'm late for work, and damn it w is worth it.
THANK YOU💖
Amazing program, although I would’ve liked to have heard info about the creation of the Organ mountains.
Thank you - very interesting
2018, Hawaii to Alaska. With 1,800 after shocks with in 24 hours. The Ring of Fire and tectonic plates are restless. The Juan de Fuca, North American, Caribbean and Cocos plates are grinding each other hard. Keep an eye on Yellowstone, as well. God in Heaven is telling us to get our lives in His order !!
Eye on Yellowstone? Lmao. Really? Something gonna happen? Yes. Nothing.
Very informative video...............loved it..............
***** Extinct? Nu-uh. They're dormant. Asleep. They could still wake up again. And some are still active.
I live in Belen, New Mexico 30 miles from Socorro so I hope it dont blow its top
Is it true that Belen/Socorro area gets low force quakes almost every year?
@@greg1030 No, only ones I heard of happened 20 years ago
I'm only 68,, when in Alb schools in the 70's, we were still on american standards not METRICS! Can you all not bury us before our deaths? Miles inchs footage. Holy crap I cant remember EVERYTHING!
My husband and kids are Acoma!Absolutely LOVE New Mexicos history and geography. By far the most underrated state in the US
Where the highway cuts through the Carrizozo lava field is something to see. I was not surprised that early date estimates for this 5000 year old flow were around 1500 years - from the sparse vegetation it looks new like maybe 100 years old.
How is this ball we're on not boiling magma everywhere. I mean due to the 2nd law of thermal dynamics I just can't compute.
I want know know some history on the vocanic activity between Hatch and Las Cruces, NM. Radium springs area
Wow, I didn't know about all the volcanic activity in the southern part of the state! Of course I grew up in northern NM.
They didn't mention the Lava flow on the south end of the Florida mountain range south east of Deming or Red mountain that's a vent that's just west of Deming and Black mountain just north of Deming is also a vent
19:27...Mount Tayler (hopefully spelled right) looks very much like that of Mount Ruapehu in the Central North Island of New Zealand
Yeah, I live by My. Taylor. Now and then, I wonder when she'll blow up. It'll stop all traffic on I-40, major hi way for travelers and semi truckers. Hope that never happens! 😥
I care about Our State. New Mexico. I don't give a Damn about New Zealand, Or Hawaii. Only Our State! As I said "Our State is Always Over Looked, Which is Wrong"!
You lost me at 100s of millions of years. That old theory is rubbish. Wish people would update their brains.
So amazing and beautiful thanks for sharing
Why is there a continual push back to Idol worship beliefs?
Who is narrator? Sounds so familiar. Its killing me!
So really that 1st line is false, its sad and upsetting that the southeastern corner of NM is always forgotten when speaking about NM. Seems as if NM calls us West Texas, and West Texas calls us NM. I guess S.E. NM is the bastard child of the land of enchantment.
Well when it’s full of a bunch of red hat trump tards then yeah y’all are west Texas.
@@techguyml So you must be a Biden-tard.
14:32, when this happened that would put Banff and Jasper National parks under a Glacier. this might have all started when that asteroid split everything apart in Chicxulub Crater. i might stand corrected - if so cool = i'm learning again
Where is a cinder cone off of I-25 and Highway 60 heading east to the right side of highway 60 you can't miss it I've been watching that little cinder cone get bigger and bigger from the highway for 20 years I would look at that if I was you
Looks like remains of Biblical trees.
Ruairi Kirwan~ Excuse Me? "We" are the True "Volcano State".. New Mexico.. And Ur deeply Wrong. Saying most, of ours are Dead! How would you know? Have you ever been here?
You Expect us, to Respect what you Believe. Then u need to Respect us. And Our Volcanoes..
New Mexico, IS THE VOLCANO STATE! THE TRUE, VOLCANO STATE!
Our Volcanoes, go way Back, Millions of Years. Then The Hawaii ones. Get it?
I will Defend where I am From. What I DO know, for a Fact! I was Born & raised in New Mexico!
I am Fighting to Protect a Few of Our Volcanoes. But, what would you care?
Its Not about U right!
Deal, with the Fact & Truth! For its RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!
New Mexico, is the REAL VOLCANO STATE! Period!
THANK YOU! We are a dormant state (geologically speaking)
Yea there is a super volcano in las cruses nm
Katharine Carmichael these volcanos will wipe you out. Lol
Alan Tang Yes There Is! Las Cruces is IN a Super Volcano! Duh!
jah z Oh, You think that is Funny Huh? I truly don’t think, U respect or Care when it comes to the True & Real Power Of Nature!
Do you 🤔 think, That I am Afraid? When these Volcanoes Blow again? 🌋. Nope. It don’t scare me, Never has or will. In many ways, I hope Black Mountain & Others Do Blow!🌋.
Wake People up. And More.
Go Elsewhere If you think things like this is Funny. Cause U have NO Idea, Truly what Nature can do!
I want to see red hot boiling lava…

NOW THAT WAS SUPER COOL 😎 .
I SURE DID ENJOY THE STORY OF THE TWIN NATIVES BEATING THE DEITY .
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS MORE🙏🏽PLEASE 🙏🏽 MORE 🙏🏽🥰
Beautiful scenery. I love driving through New Mexico.
Great video. Retired Geologist here.
Want a cookie?
Macy's parades don't spew lava.
Six finger hand prints the natives were not alone Si Te Cah
Six digit hand prints the truth is revealed their were Nephillims the giants that were in the land , Of Course the natives were not alone that had deal with giants way back then
Ahh... the image at 19:04 reminds me of being a young lad and going lava sledding. Can't do that anymore without a bunch of nanny state groups saying, "you can't do that, you'll get burned..." waaaah!... Hey I managed to survive 3rd degree burns over 50% of my body, so these damn kids nowadays can too! And, if they survive it, the pain and resulting grotesque appearance will help them develop some character!
Very interesting. Beautiful landscape photography.
I never realized how young the lava fields were in New Mexico.
Magical Place ... NM
its just nature at work, no need for preaching!! :)
Phoenix, AZ has a dormant volcano by South mountain and Estrella mountain. Also by Gillespie dam west of those mountains is an active volcano vent, which is spewing gases still to this day . Most of the population in Phoenix has no idea of the dormant volcano there.
Not Talking about AZ! No Offence. This Is New Mexico.. Our State is Always Over Looked, Which is deeply Wrong..
Red, green, and queso with sour cream and guacamole!

nice comp animation and very well informed scientists am relay,,impressed,,
This.is a beautiful documentary of the state im from.
PBS needs to remaster this video to 4k.
Volcanoes not volcanos
Favorite Documentary on RUclips.
Very nice! Will share with the chat rooms!
Time for a remaster on this video
13:20.... you will get sent back......... six foot under...
Alaska is the Volcano State (dozens of active volcanoes). 2) Hawaii; 3) Oregon; 4) Washington; 5) California; 6) Arizona; 7) New Mexico; 8) Idaho; 9) Wyoming; 10) Nevada.
Montana also had volcanic action in the past. We also are up wind from Yellowstone a super volcano
Now, due to fracking, Oklahoma (!) is very active...
@@williamarnold9744 And those quake prone states with multiple nuclear plants AND stupid enough to allow fracking.........
@@barbaraagal6996 No, you are downwind from Yellowstone. Besides, the ash cloud is only minorly affected by prevailing winds. The dispersion of ash is nearly circular for about the first 500 miles.
So don't worry. You, there in Big Sky country, will get plenty of ash, as will I, here in eastern Washington. Congratulations!
Alaska Sucks, As Does Hawaii, And New Zealand! And Truth, Yep. Truth be Told, Nope.. Our STATE is the Real and True Volcano State. Not any of those others. Get info Right for once. This is About OUR State for Damn Once!
Great Video
Those indians had 6 fingers?
Impressive 👍
Geology = Biology
Yes, that is correct.
Big Chungus
Millions of years ago? I think not.
Volcanoes is spelled with an E.
Lol hey it is PBS after all....
Anyone else wondering if this was narrated by Ellen? 😁
No
Im not scared these are dormant volcanos
This may or may not have been good PR on her part but a scientist from Yellowstone Lab wrote an article on the Yellowstone super volcano in Scientific
American or Smithsonian mag saying that it, Mt. St. Helen and Mt. Rainer are all high threat category beasts. But that "high threat" is their own rating system and
that the likelihood of them blowing is in ~ 100,000. So I figure worst case, one out of the three may blow in ~ 33,000 years. Actually, I'm more worried about driving
in NM and suddenly getting swallowed by a sinkhole. Most of NM is too much salt and gypsum in the subsoil. Search [ sinkhole Rio Rancho ], ditto Las Cruces
word from the lord JESUS volcano will erupt in the rift or because of rift. It will figurately speaking cremate people and cause devestation. I asked the lord why and he said because of my people's continual desertion of me. He didn't say when, but it's a warning .
Uh, ok
It's all in your HEAD and has no basis in reality. You religion has poisoned your mind.
Jesus?? Ok bro
Ffs, why did you have to bring religion to a science subject? Save it for church you dumbass.
I believe you. His warnings is thinning out on humanity.
This is a good documentary but all of the native Americans superstition that is contained within the video starts to make a decent science documentary about volcanoes and lava into a joke.
Native American superstition has no place in a decent science documentary
Lots of interesting and beautiful video but I do not believe in the stories of how mankind came to be and the timing of the creation. I did ask Jesus Christ into my heart and life 50 yrs ago as a 14 yr old. He did come into my heart and life and forgave me of all of my sins. When a person meets someone in his or her life of significance especially, it is impossible to honestly say that they never met that Person.
Jesus has nothing to do with Nature
@@RickElizz Yes He does because He spoke it into existance.
@john heiskell You're talking about Muslims and Catholics, no true believer in Christ would do those things. By their fruits shall you know them and that includes the acts of atheists whose morals are whatever they say they are, just look at communist China. Read the teachings of Christ and see who follows those teachings and then you'll know who truly believes.
You don't have to. It was never a question of belief.
Millions of years?? Lol
Thank you for sharing this video!
Anyone notice the 6 fingered hand?
