The thing is with vocal coaching men's voices went they are younger-voices change. For women, it's less of a noticeable change but for men it is quite noticeable. this makes it tricky because vocal teachers and the student kind of have to look out for puberty and techniques change during puberty as well. he could have had a great technique but then during puberty had to change it, which is not uncommon, and if he doesn't change quickly enough or if he brings back habits he used to do before the change it might damage his voice, usually if this happens for a while. Also, just because a young person can sing well doesn't mean that they'll sound good later in life. It might actually be the opposite.

caitlyn rowe I’m not sure how old he was in 2012 but maybe his voice was still changing. He’s clearly struggling to hit those upper register notes and his breath control needs a lot of work. He was cute though. It was a bit cringy. The a cappella cover of “Halo” was nice.

His voice isn't that bad, he's just just always trying to go the extra mile, which usually just doesn't work lol
It's really cool to see how much he's grown since then. It shows he really wants to improve and doesn't care what people say about it. He still has some things to fix, but they can be easily fixed with time.
Disclaimer: I am not a vocal coach, just my own advice: I think he could actually be a fairly good singer, if he sang the right songs, one's within his vocal range. He has more of a nasal voice, which isn't a bad thing, but sometimes that means you can't always hit the high notes within full capacity (and this goes for the ballads with the big finishing notes), depending on the way you are shaping your words. It could also pose struggle for trying to switch to different tones in a certain amount of time. But yeah, I just noticed that. I think, if he really worked with his voice, he could sing something good. Something that sounded really good within a middle range with that deep voice he has, as well as more of the nasal tone, which could be used as a stylistic choice. It could be smooth, and it would allow him to switch between different registers more easily, and less drastically so he wouldn't have to exert too much force.

I gotta tell ya'll... this is very similar to my own progression. He knows the key, he just didn't know how to create it with his mouth/throat when he was young. It really does take practice, though some are naturally very gifted vocalists. That "Halo" video shows he had tremendous improvement. When I heard him sing for the first time, just this year, I was shocked at how much I enjoyed his voice. He just has a really lovely tone, very unique actually.

in the transition from 2012 to 2015, you can really tell he started developing his own singing style as he improved his technique and began embracing his own voice. Then from 2015 to 2017, as he keeps singing, his voices develops the unique quality he has.
