Grew up in Chelmsford from 1974 to 1988 before moving to Tokyo 30 years ago. Still miss it and really needed this, thanks!

Seems very peaceful and calm compared to crazy london. Reminds me of a northern town in Sweden where i use to live 10 years ago with roughly similar population and city vibe. Consider moving to Chelmsford with a job offering 32k annually (don't know if it would be enough to have a peaceful life there).

Outside shopping, inside shopping, this city centre has it all. I saw a lot of familiar store brands there. Wow at 27:45 nice flowers and garden area. That walking path is a lovely place to see, a lot of greenery and civilized people enjoying it.

@@jithinjoy4572 Hi i was born and raised there for 23 years. Its a lovely safe place, with plenty to do. I have very good memories of Chelmsford. The house and rent prices have gone through the roof lately, like most places in the South East.

One thing I have noticed is how many towns in the UK are designed so people have to walk. I noticed that they are in pretty good shape because of all the walking.
For fun I searched, "The Best Walking Towns in America." I found an article about walking towns in the USA. If you were new to America and went to the places in the Walking Towns article you would probably get mugged. Oakland, San Francisco, Philadelphia were listed. Really!
On the upside. Wonderful video. I am a big fan of the "Detectorist" TV show. I'm pretty sure it was filmed in Essex near Framlingham. Love the UK.
Oh ha ha, walking towns to get mugged in doesn’t have quite the same ring to it does it HD? We’ll remembered regarding the detectorists… it’s, one of our favourite shows too. I remember us chatting about it some while ago as you have a detector yourself I seem to remember. I believe some of the detectorists were filmed in Danbury only a few miles away from Chelmsford. Lovely film of chelmsford,shows it very well,its a very varied city,still feels like a town which is good ,it has a frendly feel to it,lots of pleasant green spaces too, i was born nearby in high easter,lived here most of my 65 years,proud to of been born ,and lived here ,mick

I moved away in the mid 70’s. Immaculate Conception and St John Payne girl from Springfield. Recognise most of town apart from John Lewis bit…. Now living in Scotland but proud to be an Essex girl…

In the 70's the John Lewis bit was a rough car park at the back of the high street shops.
It is certainly more of city than when I lived near there, though a lot of shops have changed for worse ones, but good to see some are still there since i was last there in 2013!

I moved from Chelmsford 6 months ago, having lived there since 1994. It's certainly not the place it was since becoming a City and I'm sad to say, I'm glad I left.

@@LivingWalks Don't get me wrong, I'm not "down" on Chelmsford and many city centres are facing the same issues. Indeed, your video showed it looking amazingly. However, it had definitely deteriorated from the place I knew for 28 years. I now live in the West of Sheffield, nr the Peak District and it's beautiful. I'm not exactly looking forward to the winter however, as I apparently now live on the "snow line"!
Hi there Kevin, we so agree that many city centres are facing the same issues. The more walks we do in poor 'ol blighty the more we notice that. Living close to the the Peak District must be quite special. Ooh but living on the "snow line"... nippy but magnificent I'd imagine. All the best to you mate.

I've lived Chelmsford all my life, unfortunately since it became a city its fast turning into an overcrowded London suburb...even though were 30 miles from London!

Well it was a thriving town when it had the Marconi company , Crompton Parkinson, and the Hoffman bearing company going full stretch. These are all now gone, and with burgeoning housing estates all round it has become a dormentary town for London 45 min away by train.
Strangely it only became a :City' after all the enterprise had left. It was a little market town that grew with the industries it contained but much of the original character has gone, along with most of the independent shops and businesses, to be replaced by the faceless giants. Pity.
