    Its the same with the UAE, they thought ahead and instead of just profiting from oil, they decided since they have nothing else to export, they can only truly survive with tourism. So they spent millions to develop the land and build mega cities that people actually dream of living in like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah which would enable the wealthiest of people to invest in real estate and bring tons of tourists to spend money. Qatar isn't just hosting the world cup, they have hosted boxing, gymnastics, handball and are looking to be a prime spot for ICC T20 cricket matches as well which are well watched by more than a billion people. Qatar has focused on a niche target and hopes to continue to be that prime target.

    There's another reason why Qatar built the stadium that wasn't mentioned: what few Qataris there are are composed of numerous tribes that have often been at loggerheads and even fought out-and-out wars in the past. The stadium was a way of unifying these tribes through the medium of sport.

    • @alyafei3829
      @alyafei3829 Год назад +6

      Unifying these tribes happened in the 1970s when the Al-Thanis came into power and gave each tribe their spokesperson and plot of land and area in Qatar which they inhabit. Them being unified through sport is not true at all, the only actual tribalism that still exists is probably in the bedouins of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. The rest have integrated with the rest of society in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Bahrain.

    In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors - mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result Contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar.
    The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector - which is run by foreigners themselves.
    For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.
    If the Europeans are sincere about those south East Asians, then they should hire them in Europe.
