I really don't get those downvotes, since this is actually a super positive video about Galicia. I've never been there, alas. I'm from Northern Germany and I know several Galicians who came to my hometown area as guest workers in the 70s, when there was still rampant unemployment & rural poverty in Galicia and tourism was virtually nonexistent in this relatively remote part of Spain at the time. These people are indeed a super cool and likeable bunch!
The best part of Galicia it's something that unfortunately most tourists can't experience and it's the recipes that each family knows, and I swear that never in my whole life, I've had a bacalo that tasted like my grandma's Hay que admitir que unha das mellores partes de ser galego é a comida (·u-)
You should go to Santiago, see the cathedral and walk through the Alameda with your dog. Also, the title is a bit misleading... I, as a Galician, was ready to yell at you in the comments.
Haha, well I'm glad you watched first. Last time I did a positive title about northern spain everyone got mad that I'd spoilt the secret lol. Yes I would like to go there next...when it's not Easter hehe xx

As a spanish guy, I have travelled around the country to a lot of places, and Galicia is in my top 5 I would say, no doubt of that. My favourite place so far is the Spanish Pyrenees: Benasque and surroundings. The landscape in monte perdido near Ordesa is simply fascinating. The air there is so clean... Don't miss the oportunity to visit the pyrenees.
The Spanish Pyrenees encompasses the most beautiful places I have ever seen. And the air is so fresh! Unforgettable!!! I would mention the small villages on the way to Formigal.
Galician from A Coruña here. I actually laughed when you mentioned the hipsters thing about my city. Just a thing for your next time in our land. "X" in Galician is pronounced just like "sh" in English. So Rías Baixas would be something like "reeahs bye-shas".
Lovely review, I came to galicia for a long weekend break, I came back again 4 weeks later, bought a ruin in the hills around Ribadeo. I have been here ever since, 5 years down the line my dream house in the hills is now a real home. This place is paradise, but dont let everyone know. 😉
My ancestors are from A Coruña (formerly La Coruña). I lived there as a child and revisited it in 2016. I think it's my favorite city in the world. I've been to many countries, but I guess because it's in my blood. All of my ancestors are buried in the cemetery there. Thank you for this video.
I was already following your nice videos about Spain. But, for me, this is special because I'm a Galician who lives in A Coruña. It's realy lovely to see how you enjoy our land and your funny and clever opinions. It's a pity that there was mist when you visited the cliffs, the view is breathtaking. The small house you saw there is the ancient shelter for the watchmen who attend a beacon (like the beacons of Gondor in Lord of the Rings) that was part of a system of beacons all along the north coast of Galicia (to warn of sea attacks). At least you saw this shelter; next time, the views... ;) Thank you for this wonderful video about my land, and waiting for the upcoming...
Eligio Rodríguez thanks so much for this comment! As you can probably tell I LOVED Galicia a lot! I would love to move to A Coruña one day, and I don't say that about every city I visit! You can not imagine the incredible places you have not seen, there would be many to list. The empanada took the Spaniards to America, but, what they call pie are what we call here empanadillas, mini pies. I love your videos, come back soon.
Elyce Behrsin great to hear that! Thanks:) Have fun in Spain! And next time you visit Galicia dont miss out Costa da morte (I think you have visited couple of places already) but, Malpica and Buño ,place I come from, are great. Hi from Baixo Miño! Great video! I see you travel with your dogs! If you ever plan to visit Vigo, I recommend you to extend your visit to Porto as well. There're beautiful places between those two cities, and also a wonderful spot between Galicia and Portugal, the natural park Peneda-Gerês(Portugal)-Serra do Xurés (Galicia). It's beautiful, really close to Vigo or Porto, and perfect for a hike with the dogs. Also, the Galician side is Ourense, so if you go back to galicia through this mountains, you'll end up driving towards the hot springs area. My husband and I did it couple of times with our dog. From vigo to porto there's Nigran (gorgeous drive by the coast), Baiona (medival village, where Columbus arrived from America), Oia (monastery on the beach), a guarda (santa trega mountain with the Celtic Village and the views), o rosal (amazing wineries and mills in the river), tomiño (riverside walks, castles and bridge to Portugal), Tui (medieval village with a twin in the Portuguese side of river miño, also a bridge to Portugal), and then beautiful villages towards Portugal, like Vilanova de Cerveira, Caminha, viana do Castelo, Vila do Conde, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, Braga. You can have breakfast in one, lunch in the next, etc, and get to porto beautifully. I apologise for such a long comment, but you can tell I'm in love with my little corner of Spain. I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Galicia; we'll love to have you back.

So glad you finally made it to Galicia. Sorry you found such a foggy day to see the cliffs, shame! I do agree with the size of the portions being bigger and more value for price than in other parts of Spain. Most Spaniards who have been to Galicia adknowledge the fact. Also I'm glad that you could sense the friendliness of Galicians contrary to the myth than they are just cold and reserved. Great video and work!
Thanks so much! I will have to go back to the cliffs. The people are definitely some of the friendliest and warmest in Spain! Yeas the food is great value in terms of size and quality ☺️✨
If you ever come back to Galicia, you should check out The Lighthouses Way. It's a 200 km hiking route, devided in 12 stages connecting the most beautiful lighthouses. Wild and beautiful. Here you have some more info: www.caminodosfaros.com/en/
You really took amazing pics and I am so glad you had a great time! I understand you chose to explore landscape and gastronomy rather than cities. I hope you'll manage to get back and give some towns a chance, specially little gems like Allariz, Betanzos or Mondoñedo if you want to avoid the masses that flood Santiago de Compostela.
Very grateful for your honest and clear review of Spain in general, but I am headed to do the Camino de Santiago and really appreciate this information to help me decide on some touristic detours. Also--I am a dog person too and am glad to hear A Coruna is dog friendly.
One quick remark about 10:54 though, don't be afraid, the worst think that can happen to you in a place like that is some old lady coming up to you and giving you some food or something, lol.
OMG they need to visit you! If I had a friend there I'd go back every year...seriously. Every time I start planning my Easter break I say to my boyfriend, maybe we can go back to Galicia instead haha. Haha probably true about the ladies in the town too. 10:52 O Cañón do Río Sil is my favourite place in the whole world 😍 So I highly recommend you to go to another viewer called "Los Balcones de Madrid" near a town called Parada Do Sil. This little town is well provided for tourism: it has beautiful routes to walk between nature (I always feel like walking into a fairy tale), there are some museums to visit, there is the viewer (which is well secured and prepared for tourism) and, as always, there is good food 😋
I didn't know you could do walks from there? Now I feel ripped off because it was the view point I originally picked but because of the weather we only did three instead of four including it! Will definitely go back! Thanks for the tip x
I remember when I started to spend my summer holidays in Galicia with my parents, more than 20 years ago. Back in those days nobody likes go there in summer because of the weather, but we are from Extremadura and we enjoyed escaping from the heat for a fortnight. It`s disturbing how during these years the summers are getting warmer, less rainy and even in many houses are installing air conditioning when they didn´t need it before. Global warming it`s changing everything and I feel sorry when I see a massive amount of tourist invade what it used to be a hidden paradise.
Yes global warming is a huge problem, not just for Galicia but everywhere. It barely rained all winter here in Cantabria. Are there a lot of tourists 'invading' Galicia? Most of the tourists we met there were from Valencia or Madrid.
@@ElyceBehrsin A huge increase compared with before, besides, more and more foreigners are attracted to the nortwest due to the "improvement" of the weather.
Interesting. My impression has been that everyone still thinks the weather up north is just rain. But I guess regardless of anything else, as populations increase and mobility increases everywhere, so does tourism. It's a gift and a curse depending on how you look at it.
First of all thanks for your comments, but, the best pulpo is cocked in Ourense. Trust me our empanadas has nothing to do with Argentinians. And you missed the inner part of Galicia, it is awesome and food is great.
I believe so, unfortunately we had limited time to decided to focus on the coast this time. We had lunch in Ourense though and I definitely regret not spending time there. Apparently (so I'm told) the Argentinian ones do originate from the Galician ones, so yours have nothing to do with theirs, but theirs do to yours...if that makes sense 😂. I did like the ones in Galicia a lot I just prefer the naughtier style of the Argentinian ones (although my body definitely disagrees) hahaha
3:39 omg first time I see someone eating empanada with a knife and fork instead of their hands. Just kidding, I really enjoyed your video, it was very entertaining, so I hope you come back here sometime again. Just noticing a lot of people in the comments saying that you should go to Santiago... I'll never understand what some people see in Santiago. There isn't any point in visiting it other than religious or cultural-historiographical reasons and it's always crowded by tourists and students since it's not that big -beautiful small city vibes tho. It may be because I grew up in the rural Galiza, but I'd strongly recommend a visit to small villages and natural places rather than cities. Unha aperta!
You are my kind of person! I also grew up near nature which is why I loved Galicia so much. I totally agree with you, and I think Galicia has some of the most beautiful nature in Spain! I’ll definitely come back! Any small towns or rural places you can recommend?
This is going to sound very cliche. But I recently found out I have Galician heritage. Every time I see pictures of the landscape and even the old Celtic ruins I feel like something is calling me home. Still I want to visit it for the history and obviously the food.
the place where you had pulpo in Coruña was La Taberna del Cunqueiro, a staple in the city center for "tapeo"... very good & abundant tapas with your beverage consumption
Seeing as you really liked Galicia, then the next time that you are around here, you should visit the Playa de Carnota, The town of Muros and also the town of Noya( in Gallego Noia), these three places aren't very far away from each other and they are all on the west coast. I am absolutely certain that you will absolutely love them. These places also belong to what is known as As rias baixas or en castelian Rias Baja's(the lower coast).
*FINISTERRAE,* that is the name the romans knew this cape with. For centuries, it was the end of the known world (they didn't know anything about America, obviously), that's why they named it like this: *FINIS TERRAE,* in latin, means _the end of the world_ ( _fin de la tierra_ in modern Spanish). For them, It was the westernmost point of land in Europe, and its views and landscapes are worth a visit nowadays.
@@MrStraphangin yeah, but not for romans. They thought finisterra cape was the end of the world, the land that was deeper into the western ocean. Today, with our modern technology and our modern measure systems, we know they was wrong, and the westermost point in Europe is Cabo da Roca... Also beautiful landscape there
I grew up in El Ferrol and you should visitt with great shrip building history , ship yards and museums plus 2 Military Defense Castes. at the entrance of the Ria. i remember i wrote here few weeks ago when you made a video about the north of Spain. I have seen that you have felt the difference between this two sides, north and south, it is completely different, north is more autenthic than the south, you realized that you can't find "flamenco shows" and "paella is not the first choice and even more, you can't find it" but you have discovered that the interior has is own appeal, and a really big one, is not fake like a tourist show for foreign people...this is real. I know that more people love sun, fiesta, alcohol and beach...you have the east and the south for it, but if you are looking for the real thing...you must go to the north and you will discover a a really new and diferent countrycountry. I glad to know that you enjoyed it.
I loved it! I'm living in Cantabria and I love it here too! You're right, there's less show and more authenticity here. It's quite refreshing! Thanks for the comment!
Hi Elyce, I live in Argentina but since I have Galician ancestry I visited last October the land of Galicia and I was amazed, and now I am amazed again to find a woman from California praising Galicia. Keep travelling.
Just back from Galicia. We love seafood. One thing we noticed is that it seems that they have octopus (pulpo) and then other seafood, whatver that is, because pulpo is such a humungous opart of the seafood list there you dont see a lot else (though it's there...). It just seemed a little one dimensional. In Portugal, similar, but big on cod (I also love cod).
Galicia is the Portugal that was kept inside Spain, or put it the other way, Portugal is the Galicia that get away of spain ( Castilla, to be more historically correct). Galicia and Portugal have more in common than the rest of spain, starting with the language.
I don't know how to say this exactly, but I could feel that while I was there. I do have a love affair with both countries so maybe that's why I loved Galicia so much. Ah, need to do another trip to Portugal soon...stop giving me wanderlust :P
1. Octopus is dank 2. Seafood is dank 3. Do not like large bodies of H2O 4. Sand gets on everything 5.Lighthouses are cool 6. All we do is graze, all day... 7. I hate heights, no one will catch you 8. I like abandoned town 9. Not into trendy towns 10. I like rain... A LOT OF RAIN Guess where a section of my family is from. Yes, the edge of the world. The rest are from Castile...
You passed very close to my country, about 40 km. You could have made a detour and have visited Vila Nova de Cerveira, it's not so bad! "Parabéns" por este viaje, vecina! 🙂
Hi from Tomiño! Vilanova is a must when visiting the south of Pontevedra. Even though is Portugal, it feels like home to me. Hopefully, the next time, she'll spend sometime around here and enjoy the riversides.
Galicia has really a lot of beautiful natural places and very very good food, specially the seafood in the coast. I from Cedeira, a very beautiful town right down that cliff in "Serra da Capelada" (yeah it's the highest one in mainland Europe) and I'm really sad you couldn't see anything up there because the views are just amazing. Besides there are a really small place (like 50people live there) called San Andrés de Teixido, its a place of peregrination, I think the second most visited in Europe or Spain, and its beautiful too with a lot of legends and miths around it. And if you want the whole pack, near there, but with a risky way, down the cliffs its the only beach in the world made of black sand that's not volcanic formation(?) (de origen no volcánico). Obviously you have to visit my town too, Cedeira, its really beautiful with beautiful beaches and sigths all over the town, good food, best "percebes" and nice people. I hope you come back someday and don't miss Santiago again in your travel, no excuses for not visiting
Galifornia is only the south part, from Caldas de Reis and Vilagarcía to the south, specially near the north border of Portugal. Both Pontevedra and Ourense provinces... the north is more rainy and windy. It's impresive going in car and 5 minutes before reaching caldas usually the sky changes. About the signs in the Sil canyon you must understand that Galicia is so underrated that lots of places are not developed/prepared for foreign (non-galician) tourists.
I'm from Galicia and I see it as rainy and miserable, but when it is sunny oh boy,it becomes a beautiful place, about food,I ate octopus all my life ,in Lugo capital city there is actually a celebration call San Froilán with rides, when talking about seafood there are some great fishes, also the bread us absolutely great, Santiago de Compostela is also a beautiful place, you can always see people doing El Camino de Santiago and you NEED to trie callos,a food

These people are indeed a super cool and likeable bunch!
people just read the title of the video, which is the opposite of the content....
Shhhh! we don't want the Atlantic to become the new Benidorm.
it won't
It won't because it's too cold in the summer
No te preocupes. Es imposible. Demasiada lluvia.
The best part of Galicia it's something that unfortunately most tourists can't experience and it's the recipes that each family knows, and I swear that never in my whole life, I've had a bacalo that tasted like my grandma's
Hay que admitir que unha das mellores partes de ser galego é a comida (·u-)
I would believe that! The abuelas are the best cooks after all x
So true, my grandma's method of putting the chicken in the oven and going for misa - that's not even something you can teach.

Probably, the empanada from Argentina comes from Galicia, because in previous times, the Galicians migrated in a great mass to Argentina❤
I'd say you're right :D
Galician from A Coruña here. I actually laughed when you mentioned the hipsters thing about my city. Just a thing for your next time in our land. "X" in Galician is pronounced just like "sh" in English. So Rías Baixas would be something like "reeahs bye-shas".
Haha, they are the only ones I've seen in Spain I think...maybe Barcelona? Oh thanks! I will remember that!
Galicia is a hidden gem! So beautiful!

Lovely review, I came to galicia for a long weekend break, I came back again 4 weeks later, bought a ruin in the hills around Ribadeo.
I have been here ever since, 5 years down the line my dream house in the hills is now a real home.
This place is paradise, but dont let everyone know. 😉
Oh that's an amazing story! I'm so glad you found your happy place. Yeh seriously! It's so good how it is right now!
Galicia is the best kept secret of Spain, I'm glad you loved my homeland, you are very welcome to come back whenever you want :)
At least you saw this shelter; next time, the views... ;)
Thank you for this wonderful video about my land, and waiting for the upcoming...
Eligio Rodríguez thanks so much for this comment! As you can probably tell I LOVED Galicia a lot! I would love to move to A Coruña one day, and I don't say that about every city I visit!
That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing that extra info! It was actually really amazing despite the clouds but when I'm back I'll definitely try and see the view again! Besos!
You can not imagine the incredible places you have not seen, there would be many to list.
The empanada took the Spaniards to America, but, what they call pie are what we call here empanadillas, mini pies. I love your videos, come back soon.

Dámaso Rodríguez Salgado. Estoy de acuerdo pero el agua está muy fría, en el Caribe está templadita. En rias baixas parece que le echáis cubitos de hielo por la noche. So glad you finally made it to Galicia. Sorry you found such a foggy day to see the cliffs, shame!
Loved it. Part of my Spanish background. Across La Coruna via car or ferry is a small town called Mera, where one set of grandparents came from.
Happy to see you enjoyed your stay here. Come again whenever you want!

The westernmost point in Europe is in Portugal, Cabo da Roca 🙂.

i remember i wrote here few weeks ago when you made a video about the north of Spain.

Galiza and the North of Portugal, especially the Minho region are essentially two parts of the same whole.
So glad you liked Galicia! You should visit Mondoñedo next time!

Thanks so much! Glad to hear it xx
Love your video! But please, please, don't discover any more places, undiscovered by tourist.
Galicia es una maravilla...❤️
Es verdad 😍
Thank you so much for your comments about my city, A Coruña. Greetings from this small/big city.
You´re very welcome. I had the best time there. Such a cool and beautiful part of the world.
Vivamos como Galegos ❤️❤️
lmfao , i was born in galicia mama , galicia is the shit . atleast for me . it’s because you went to visit . let’s say like me ? i was born in galicia santiago de compostela spain . but i moved to miami when i was 4 . if you wanna see some really pretty clear water beaches you can go to Sanvicente ( el grove , or pontevedra . they go by both) i go every summer to sanvicente do mar pedras negras , with my dad since he lives over there . i’m honestly inlove with it and my love for galicia has grown over the years while i got older . ofc i don’t like going over there because i’m not with my mom and i’m with my dad alone and his girlfriend , but galicia is honestly really pretty . Again sanvicente do mar pedras negras , has a rlly pretty beach called Burato , it has a lot of rocks u can jump off of into the water and u enjoy it a lot . sanvicente pedras negras is a small comunity where people go to spend their summer , but over all its small and super safe and all the teenagers and kids have a liberty of walking around and being out until late because their house is right there is or their parents are out to a restaurant or bar really close . i rlly like that . and a rlly pretty mountain with great views is el pico sacro , in lestedo about 5-10 minutes from santiago . my dad lives in lestedo but my brother that moved over there about 2-3 years ago lives in santiago and my mom used to live in santiago too when we lived there . Galicia is honestly everything
really nice report and well depicted with all those wonderful pictures superb fit into your speech... but please, fala galego not spanish :)
Hahaha one language struggle at a time 😜
I've been to Galicia since I was 3 every single summer and the sun was beautiful and the food is fantastic not to forget the street party for the vine grape albariño. In Cambados lots of dancing happy people street food and vine ❤❤❤totally awesome
Spain's best kept secret.....until now!
