Ive heard the story many times about Maggie Dixon/ Dickson but its always good to hear it again . She was extremely lucky she didn't go to the surgeons hall.
She was lucky her friends insisted on taking her body despite protestations from the wealthier surgeons & even luckier that the male driven law didn't insist on re-hanging the poor traumatised woman. 300 years later i raise a small glass in your honour Maggie Dickson RIP. Cymru.
I have read of others who survived hanging. Mostly prior to the 1800s. Apparently if a person survived the hanging, especially for something like Maggie that didn't involve the obvious, intentional death of someone else, or treason, they often didn't re-hang the person. It could be that the survival was seen as an intervention by God. I was curious and just read an Australian story about "The Man Franks" , hanged in the Kingdom of Fiji (~1872) which makes the executioner pulling on Maggie's leg interesting. There are two types of hanging, strangulation and the big drop/neck break sort. In the "Frank" story they tell how the executioner bungled it and the rope wouldn't slide because it had gotten wet. The executioner pulled on Frank's leg to tighten the noose and did a bad job of it. So after Frank hung there a while not completely strangling he freed his hands and after complaining loudly an official finally cut Franks down. (The Fijians banished him.) So if the hangee's friends cut them down before they had strangled to death they might survive.
@AScottishOdyssey thank you Claire. I think it's reasonably well-known due to the pub but there are a few different versions. As always, thanks for watching x
Only way they were able to study human anatomy. Give thanks to them if you’ve ever had to undergo surgery, or had cancer or TB, or suffered any physical trauma needing surgical repair

@kitefan1 that's really interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Thank you for watching the video too.
I read about Half-Haggit Maggie in a book about Auld Edinburgh, There was also a story about a woman called Muckle-Moothed Meg.
I must try and find that story. She sounds intriguing. Thanks for the tip and for watching.
Another really interesting video. I first heard her story on one of the bus tours in Edinburgh.

Good to 👂 You on this channel👋
Thank you!
"Oh dear".
And ever since then, a person known for understatement has been known as a 'Maggie Dixon'. (Joke)
Haha! Thank you so much for watching the video.
Hey from Memphis. This is as good as a Monty Python sketch.
It is a bit. Welcome, and thank you for watching.
Not dead yet....
This was a real woman who suffered a horrific ordeal, so whatever resemblance it has to Monty Python is purely superficial.
Those surgeons sound like absolute ghouls!
They were. They were desperate for bodies for the anatomy classes, and it seems it was at any cost. Thank you so much for watching the video

Are all judges born evil..
@RichardEdwards-gt1qm back in those days, they seemed to just enjoy power over ordinary people. Thank you so much for watching her story.
My family were from County Fife. I wonder if I still have family connections there.
@TerriElder here we call it the Kingdom of Fife. It's certainly possible. Thanks for watching the video.
