  • Just when it appeared Ford had abandoned performance at the start of the 1980s, it released the 1982 Mustang GT after a hiatus of more than a decade. That when things began to change for the better. Watch the video to find out why the 1982 Mustang GT is the most important Mustang and why it has had such a lasting impact with performance car buyers.

My first Mustang was a '85 GT. Seeing the foxbody released years earlier in 1979 I fell in love with the style even though I grew up in a Chevrolet family...I've owned 7 Mustangs since the 1980's!

85 1/2 was a good mid year with slightly hotter GT manual available with 215 hp plus SVO with 205 hp. 86 both were slightly de tuned with some automatic GT’s having even worse throttle body injection. in my humble opinion 85 1/2 and 89 are the most desirable of the Fox bodies with the 89 lx 5.0 and 85 1/2 manual GT being the quickest and the 8 1/2 SVO and 89 hatchback lx 5.0 being the fastest in terms of top speeds

My buddy back in 82 had one from his Dads ford dealership. It was such a fun quik car relatively speaking. My first mustang was a 1989 5.0 lx 5 speed. Its was so quik for the time. I'm on my 3rd gt500 now. Just got a 2021 gt500. Wow what a great car. I've had a mess of mustangs in between. Best bang for the buck. Sounds awesome. Thank you Ford.

I loved that car, and recently found the current owner and its still a project car still after 13 years since I sold it. Lol. Although I had it for 3 years, it needed too much work to be a daily car. Bought one of these brand new off the showroom. Red GT with the rear lovers and Michelin TRX tires. Found out they were the only tires that would fit on the rims at that time. It wasn't 60's fast but the hp to weight ratio was a step in the right direction. Then winter came and it snowed. You could not ease the clutch out slow enough to keep the rear end from spinning. It was front end heavy. But I loved that car. Still do and always will.

Thank you for this video. This was my first car back in 2004 or so, $1600 and ran like a mess. Was supposed to fix it up with my pop but it never happened. Still though... what it lacked it reliability it more than made up for in fun and style, and it taught me a lot about owning a car that my peers today don't even know. Sweet memories :)

    • @alexh10001

Yeah I bought one of these used when I was 24 years old. Fun car to drive hard and handled well but only because the suspension was sooo stiff. I remember running the front tires at about 25 psi because I was afraid the dash would fall apart. And this had traction bars, right? Must be the only car ever to come with traction bars. But you are right about the reliability - everything went wrong with that car inside and out and at about 100k miles I drove it to the junkyard because I could not imagine selling it to anyone. The driver seat actually broke through the floor pan and the dealer told me this was a recall issue but they would not fix it so I drove around with drivers seat tilted over and a hole in the floorpan. In fact this car finally made me swear off domestic cars forever not so much because of the quality issues but because of really poor customer service.

One Saturday evening in 1985 when I was a senior in high school my best friend stopped at my house after coming back from the nearest big town with a 1982 Mustang GT. I was so jealous but being the best friend he was he let me drive it often. Then about two years later when he and his brother were heading home and they hit a patch of ice and went in the ditch and totaled it after hitting a tree. The insurance company found him one exactly like the one he wrecked. They both looked just like the one in this video. I still to this day think it was a sharp car. I ended up buying my senior year a 79 2.3 turbo mustang but had nothing but electrical problems with it. The turbo went out so I dumped it about 6 months after buying it. A college buddy had a silver SVO Mustang which was a fast car. I haven’t had a sports car most of my life until I bought an SRT Challenger. My high school best friend also had a Probe GT I think it was and a Merkur with same engine as SVO. Guess I can’t complain because at 21 I got a 1970 Chevelle which I have had 33 years and still have to this day.

In 1979 the California Highway Patrol bought the best selling ever Camaros, and the new 4-door foxbody, one generation only, Ford Fairmonts (78-83) for road work. They found out pretty quickly that the Fairmonts (replacements for the Maverick) were a better deal overall, and asked Ford to develop something for them to replace the Camaros based on the platform which was also the base for the new, still underpowered, Mustang. It is no coincidence that the Mustang GT and the Mustang SSP both appeared in 1982.
It is also just about the only decent thing I can think of that California ever influenced in the last century.

My first car was this and the same color/wheels. I have a ton of memories...It was first my dad's car originally and he said I could buy it when I got my first job. He had a 1968 Mustang GT , so this 82 was probably a redheaded stepchild "so to speak" to him Anyways all summer I worked from 8-5 for 2 1/2 months and my dad took all my paychecks. Occasionally he would throw me a ten (I was like"dang"). And he would have this smirk as he handed me 10.00 after I worked outside all day, Mon-Fr. But at the end of summer he had it all cleaned up and gave it to me and I remember how good it felt finally getting it. And I think most everyone thought he gave it to me but I definitely paid for it albeit he gave me a good deal looking back. And I felt a good pride knowing I worked for it. This exact car is full of so many memories, stupid choices, and lessons learned. I know mustang fans..."I wish I still had it". Lol

I read an article about the '82 Mustang GT in a car magazine: I took notice. A couple of years later I was standing at a light with a '68 Torino GT Coupe: a guy pulled up next to me in a new Mustang GT: he must have heard my exhaust: he took off like he was being shot out of a canon! I took notice again!
In 1988 I was tired of noticing: I went to the Ford Dealer and ordered a brand new one! I waited 10 weeks because they had to build me one. I had to bring a friend to the dealer to bring it home because I couldn't really drive a stick just yet. (I learned pretty quickly.)
It was a great car: I drove it 25 years. It was super-reliable, got respectable fuel economy (all things considered...). If it wasn't such a handful in snow, you might call it "near perfect"!

The Fox body chassis saved the Mustang where the Mustang II nearly killed it. I remember when those '82 GTs hit the streets. They had a tuned exhaust and sounded awesome. The big challenge is to find one from 1980 or 81 in original condition. By the late 80s and early 90s you could get one of those for peanuts. Most had their 4 or 6 cylinder engines taken out and had 351s dropped in.

It would be interesting to hear more commentary on the engine package for the 82 Mustang GT it was quite clever the Ford Engineers went to Mercury Division and recruited a Marine cam and they also
Went to cat converters only for noise suppression and somehow or another passed DOT requirements there were other little tricks they performed I believe they had a feature where the air conditioning clutch disengaged when you nailed it to improve horsepower to the rear wheels under W.O.T "Get it" acceleration.
What were some of the other things they did??? It's been so long ago can some of the viewers share? I'm so glad you featured this car I have always wondered if car Gearhead muscle car historians realized what Ford did for us purists...funny I worked at Ford when this happened and I called over to the M-GT development department through the interphone network to talk to the engine designer I found his name from a Car Craft magazine we had a good chat those guys were great.
Thanks again for featuring this darling of the hot rod community and it's contribution to keeping performance V8 American Motorsports alive.

With a set of Hoosier street drag radials in the front on her Prius for Christmas... the humor was not appreciated.

I had a 76 Chevy Malibu, rebuilt the engine and to get almost 300 hp out of it and frustrated all my friends with the GTs, Camaros, Regals, Firebirds, and other "new" cars. I remember a guy asking, how come your 1300 dollar car whips my 13,000 dollar car without trying. I think he had a Sebring convertible and thought it was fast.

I bought a new 1983 Mustang GT, 175 horse Holley 4 barrel 5.0 with 5-speed overdrive. Dark red with black stripe on hood and red vinyl interior. Didnt have the metric wheel/tires. Loved that car. Paid $9,800.00 brand new. I could put rubber down in first to fourth. Fourth gear was a chirp at 85-90 mph. Owned it 9 years. Brought both my kids home from hospital in it when they were born. Sold it and bought my wife one of those newfangled Explorers in 1992. Regret selling it but thats water under the bridge.

I was hired by Ford in 1982 as junior executive when they released the Mustang GT and it FLEW off the line. Dealers and Drivers loved it and it revived the Division. It was definitely a bold move because at the time factories had to meet CAFE requirements and could not afford to lose power on profitable truck products. Paired with the aggressive marketing of the Ford Ranger and Bronco ll the company single handedly rescued the American muscle car and inspired a new generation of light truck buyers and SUVs. Really a case study in engineering and marketing done right.

I had a red one, TRX, black cloth interior, 3.08:1 gears, with a factory sunroof, AC, rear defrost and wiper, cruise control, and Premium Sound. Only options I can think of which it didn't have were tilt wheel, and power windows and locks. I've got to say that the '84 RS 5.0 and '92 GT I had, along with the '88 GT vert I now have, all seemed to be built better, (and definitely quicker) but that '82 GT was the best-looking of all of them!
And even back in the late 1980s and early '90s, I was telling people that the '82 Mustang GT 5.0 is the '64 GTO of the second (and current) musclecar era!
Anyone catch the Holley bowl peeking out from under that dual snorkel at :47? Mine was like that... Looks like dealer or aftermarket AC on that car too - check out those hoses! My Dad, Jim Clarke, was the powertrain engineer who secretly put the 5.0L back into the 1982 Mustang.
The way he told the story to me, there was a big meeting at Ford about what to do next regarding the 1982 Mustang vehicle program. At a certain point in the meeting, my Dad raised his hand and suggested that the company put the 5.0L back into the Mustang. A nay sayer spoke up and replied,
"That will never work because we won't meet the EPA standards for fuel economy!"
"No, no, we meet the emissions requirements now," replied my Dad. We are good to go."
"Yeah, but the feasibility studies will take months to get done!"
"No, we've completed the research," countered my Dad. "The 5.0L is a viable option."
"Okay, but we still need an established prototype to even consider the possibility of production," asserted the nay sayer. Then my Dad pulled out a set of keys from his pocket and replied, "We've got a tested prototype out front. Does anyone want to take it out for a spin?" The room got silent for a moment.
"It sounds like powertrain knows what it's doing," said the leading executive in the room. "Let's go for a ride." The rest, as they say, is history.
That engineering gamble was the watershed of my Dad's career, and he spent the next twenty years as the leading powertrain engineer for Ford Motor Company. He has been retired for a long time now, but he still loves to tell this story about the 82 'Stang.

I can't believe Ford continued using the inferior 4 lug bolt pattern all the way thru to 1993. Back in the '80s & early '90s in my hometown you only got a Mustang if you couldn't afford a Firebird or Camaro. They did have the weight advantage for many years though for an American performance car. The current Mustang is my favorite design since the 1969 Mach 1.

Excellent video! I bought my silver 1982 Mustang GT in 1983 when it was 10 months old and still have it today. Just to add the primary reason for the 1982 Mustang GT was to steal the show from GM which was introducing the all-new Camaro and Firebird in 1982. Ford had a 4-year old Mustang and knew the magazine testers would use the Mustang to compare to the all new Camaro. Ford threw the whole GT project together in just a few months at the last minute and initially intended it to have a Holley/Motorcraft 4-barrel carburetor but couldn't get it emission certified in time so Ford used a larger 2-bbl carburetor, the 4-barrel made production the following year. To further antagonize GM Ford was going to call the new performance package the Mustang SS stealing the Camaro's old model designation but at the very last minute changed it to GT like the '60's Mustang package. The Mustang in your video at 4:10 is the prototype Mustang GT and it has the SS emblems on the hatch and dash and it was featured in several early magazine reviews, also note it has the thin bodyside moldings that were later used on SVO Mustangs and they don't match the GT's bumper covers.
