According to Wikipedia...
The Sea organ (Croatian: Morske orgulje) is an architectural object located in Zadar, Croatia and an experimental musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps.
Chaotic reconstruction work undertaken in an attempt to repair the devastation Zadar suffered in the Second World War, which turned much of the sea front into an unbroken, monotonous concrete wall.
The waves create somewhat random but harmonic sounds. The device was made by the architect Nikola Bašić as part of the project to redesign the new city coast (Nova riva), and the site was opened to the public on 15 April 2005.
The Sea Organ has drawn tourists and locals alike. In addition, white marble steps leading down to the water were built later. Concealed under these steps, which both protect and invite, is a system of polyethylene tubes and a resonating cavity that turns the site into a large musical instrument, played by the wind and the sea.
In 2006, the Sea Organ was awarded with the prize ex-aequo of the fourth edition of the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
Every video I've seen of this it sounds totally different. Like this one seems happy, but other times it sounds relaxed, gloomy, or even really creepy. It's like you are listening to the mood of the sea, which, to me, is absolutely beautiful.
Well said! That was how I felt when I was there.
Maybe the water is at different depths.
It all depends on the water flow into each individual pipe. Water pushes air through the tone holes in the pipe. Pipe length determines the pitch. Intensity of the water flow determines the volume.
the waves are playing on SEA minor
*Five years later* GROAN!!
More exactly, they are playing in E flat major 😂😂😂
@@andrea_zao noooo, F# minor with its modes, depending on wind directions, different modes are combined ;)
I can definitely hear a pattern in the music.
It probably there isn't but we're so wired to look for patterns and meaning where it might be none that we THINK there is
And harmonized tho.
The waves push water through tubes in a wavey pattern and the tubes are arranged to play 1 note each, I'm guessing
reminds me of that episode of spongebob where he made a bunch of stone statues of himself that make noises when wind blew though them.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Samee
excellent
This is how mother nature plays the organ.
Literally!
She needs lessons...
Imagine the far off future when humans rediscover this and freak the fuck out lmao
+Tea the way we make shit nowadays it probably wont stand the test of time in the next 20 years
+Tony Gonzalez The holes were cut out of a wall built during WW2. Whoops...
+Tea Theres a SpongeBob episode of that (no joke)
+bomb00000 source?
I was thinking the same thing! They are gonna think it was some type of temple or something incredible!
This is the ultimate form of ART. They created ART so the ocean could create ART from that ART itself!
i can listen to this forever.
+f1234k people seem to dislike it from the comments, but I think it's pretty neat.
Agreed! We were laying there for a long time.
finally a sane comment
could you imagine the realtor's trying to sell property in that area?
"Yes I have a lovely 3 bedroom condo with an ocean view available in Zadar and you know, they completely did away with that unbroken, monotonous concrete wall and installed a giant sea organ that plays random off key notes night and day and when there are storms, it sounds like the wailing of damned souls, so are you interested?? hello?? Hello did I mention the walls of the condo are made of particle board and plaster?"
+Keisha Gamman sea not ocean - croatians wouldn't build with that cheap shit
It's impossible to be off key if it isn't written as specific notes in a specific key. An example of off key would be playing an E flat melody and hitting D flats when you play the D notes when D flat isn't in the key.
+Keisha Gamman
Made me laugh, but no one actually lives there :D The buildings you see are state offices and the university. Plus, you can't actually hear the Organ unless you get as close as they did in this video ;)
If your state officials are anything like ours, I'd buy that sea organ an amplifier
Hahahahaha!!!
Giving nature voice - an instrument built into the landscape and played by nature. Beautiful!
It sounds like it's trying to play "Under the Sea"
^o^
i think so too. n.n
What a beautiful looking place.
It was stunning...and relaxing.
Imagine tripping out and being here at night.
If it played forever it would eventually play the starwars theme tune
I mean... I guess...
Felt like I was in a Salad Fingers video. Thank you, Boards of Canada.
*croatia bitch
This would be amazing and creepy as fuck during the night in a horror movie
Why are people giving so many negative feedback? And not only that, getting so many likes. Oh gahd! Get those people first!
Different people have different opinions, personally I like the concept of this, but the sounds are just unbearable
It's actually really not that bad. It's just that one constantly reoccuring sound that's so unique and disturbing that seems to really play over all the other notes when it's heard. Remove that one and it sounds like someone hitting random notes on xylophone in no particular order, but it isn't bad at all and is almost comparable to the natural sound of like a forest teeming with life.
Does no one else find this terrifying?
+Desantine I do, but when is too long :/
+Desantine have you been there?
nah i have not, ied definitely go, but it would be super creepy to me lmao
Desantine
I find your avatar picture even more terrifying.
I can just imagine humpty dumpty sitting at the edge of the sea organ, looking into the horizon & gently bobbing himself to the tunes of the ocean.
I for one like it. Wonder how it sounds in violent storms? sweeeeeeet
I'm waiting for that video to be posted...
Wooow, this is so beautiful! :) The music is like beautiful background music for the sea... I think it really suits it, and is beautiful.
It was such a beautiful experience... Definitely!
Artistic. Its amazing how our brains work. For the creator of that, hes just being creative. When people dislike it we see they have issue if accepting themselves as they are creative themselves
VERY creative indeed!
not quite my tempo...
+Boostah k (PROCEEDS TO VERBALLY ABUSE THE SEA)
+Abominatrix650 Verbally? Lash it down like Xerxes 1, son
+Abominatrix650 "FUCKING SEA LEARN TO MAKE MUSIC"
***** That was Caligula, not Xerxes
+Abominatrix650 What? No? Look up Pontoon bridges.
Wow, what a special instrument. Sounds like a mixture of steeldrum and a flute.
Love it. Such a creative idea
Yes!
Reminds me of the Spongebob episode of when he found out he could make music with his holes that the jellyfish loved XD
It's rather upbeat.
The ocean - er, sea - was very upbeat that day!
its playing under the sea music live :)
+Manuelito Lazaro Funnily enough, I heard it too. Sounds like an 8 year old who got a cheap recorder and learned the first 5 seconds of Under The Sea and is running around the house playing it over and over and over.
Sounds like the background music to Salad Fingers videos
Just wonderful! thank you for video : )
You're welcome. It WAS wonderful!
yay, this would drive me insane
Dont walk there In the night, wtf
It sounds way better irl
why is that, please?
should not walk in the night?
I could listen to this forever. :)
I was in no rush to leave....
My Zadar 😍
Sounds like a constant warm up!
Wow I smiled
Me, too!
Hahaha, it sounds like an orchestra testing out their wind instruments before a show! This is really cool. Not like others that sound terrible or so-so. This sounds beautiful. And the high-pitched one reminds me of a restless, annoying (but funny) kid blowing into their recorder. (I can attest to doing just that in music class when I was 10.)
Nice description!
La música que produce este órgano puede resultar atormentadora para el oído humano. Me gusta más el suave y natural ruído de las olas del mar cuando abrazan la costa.
Sounds like Ariel's ghost trying to play some music. o.O
I'm kinda scared of this sound... It sounds very alien-like too. XD
Gracias.
Has anyone recorded this and put it on a CD or something? I would like to buy it so I could listen to it all the time.
It almost sounds like the song fireflies
To me this sounds beautiful.
Can't pin down exactly why, but it sounds beautiful somehow.
And it reminds me of "From Dust".
I wanna know what it sounds like during a storm!!!
So beautiful!
Yes!
That's beautiful
Yes!
This is fascinating and creepy at the same time
houses around there must be pretty cheap
+Plevell There aren't any houses in the immediate vicinity and the "music" is barely audible unless you're standing right on top of it.
There are no houses😂
this must be really awesome while watching the sun rise
The sunsets there are incredible!
OpenCulture brought me here.
this is actually really interesting.
It sounds to me like the Disney - Litte Mermaid cartoon theme song slowed/pitched down. :D
Absolutely magnificent💗.💗
If you live near this place you can get crazy.
Samo jedan balkanski komentar. Da se zna ovo bi trebalo najvise da vide balkanci a ne ovi sto su dosli sa interesting engeneiring itd....
Beautiful!
Really nice music.
Very pretty, although I wouldn't want to try and sleep anywhere near it
awesome
Yes!
Scarey when the shadow legs appeared.....
I'll make sure to tell my brother. That's his shadow!
flipian Lol, I was concentrating on the music so hard I got a fright....
+GORDON BENNETT Ha!
now lets hear storm surf tunes
Аж испугался! И еще - детей пугать ,если плохо будут себя вести, то приводить слушать эту какофонию
SERIOUSLY? This is torture! WTF?! :D
Dat warp stabilizer... Makes the perspective go all tripped out when the camera moves. Thought it was lack of sleep at first lol. Also I'd get sick of that chiming pretty quick.
Ha! If only I had a more steady hand...
Just hope sealife aren't impacted in a negative way🙏🙏🙏
It's really cool
Does it have a 10 hours long version? :D
(You know, stress at the university...)
that would do my head in.
Dude it sounds like Forest Temple from Zelda Ocarina of Time
Organic music.
Saw and heard this a week ago, trully amazing experiment!!
The neighbors should love this at night, when they are trying to sleep
better than loud obnoxious neighbors.
Nice but I couldn't make it all the way through the video let alone live near that! haha
Glad the tones are good. Bad tones would make this like, that screaming sun from rick and morty.
reminds me of BOC - beware the friendly stranger.
amazing
wooooooooooow nice !!
Beautiful... but, those living nearby? :s
+Kaycee bosco no1 is leaving near that and the sound is muffled when you're not directly on the openings
+Kaycee bosco Its not loud
It's not loud at all... A few steps away and you can barely hear it.
That's awesome! I wish the waves here in California would learn to play an instrament... :/
Sick.
Does This Goes On The Whole Day? Of So I Would Have Been A Zombie If I Wake Up
I Love it!
Very similar to the sounds I've heard in various deep forests of New England. Like a wonky Calliope.
IMPRESIONANTE #RD
Matt Santoro brought me here!
same
WOW.
It sounds like i'm drunk in a submarine with someone playing one of those bamboo flutes.
Por alguna extraña razón Homero le ha dado tanto poder al Océano. :)
Far better than San Francisco's wave organ.
It's sounds like music from one of Harmony Korine's movies
sounds like scary music
Under the sea ...
Sounds like the bird whistles from the game Journey
fine for about 20 seconds.
Lindo
It's really nice, but I would think twice before to move somewhere closer to it. :D
This sounds just like my sister's dryer, actually.
que maravilla!
Who's gonna plug those up for the night so people can sleep there? haha :D
