  • Artist Sid Burnard welcomes us into his weird and wonderful world of beachcombing. Through his eyes we see how an old fragment of driftwood transforms into an elegant neck of a bird, or how a washed up lavatory seat takes on a new life as a boat: 'The Loo-seat-ania'. It is a warm and humorous insight into a creative mind with an astonishing gift of seeing what others do not.
"It takes a special eye to see the potential beauty in what others discard. His work always makes me smile." Simon Beaufoy, Screenwriter Slum Dog Millionaire, The Full Monty

Biography - Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.
He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed -- simply introduced to another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.

After a really rubbish day this video has calmed me. I also work with driftwood and this video refreshed everything I felt as I started out creating for therapeutic reasons. Sid has created beautiful and wonderful work and is so inspiring as the joy and love he has for the whole collecting and creating process is obvious to see. Thanks.
