A Heat gun would of been better to soften the pvc board. Without burning the material. A+ for effort and working with what ya got! 😉👍

      @canoemantoo1 2 года назад +15

Yes on the heat gun. Plus one can very easily weld PVC with the hot air gun on PVC, with colored PVC welding rods. Then sand, is much stronger. But of course my hind site is 20/20. Great job.

A heat gun would've given alot more control . We used to use a hotbox to bend pvc pipe back when I was building pools. I'd considered trying to make some sort of oven for the PVC trim but in the end I thought it would be just too time consuming to do

When you burn or process PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) you get a gas called HCl or Hydrochloric Acid. PVC will deform around 60 degrees C or 140 degrees F. So, a powerful heat gun makes GOOD sense. Even in injection molding process temps rarely exceed 350 degrees F. Given residence (how much time spent in the barrel total) time of about 3 minutes tops. People have died from HCl poisoning when they were cutting seats from a school bus using a torch. Speaking from a retired Plastics Processing Engineer.

Matt, your carpentry certainly brings a whole new meaning to your channel's name :) What a contrast to Mads over at Sail Life.... If you can, Tab,Tab,Tab everywhere you can. You can greatly stiffen up the boat and lessen (future) cabinet distortion through tabbing. Anywhere wood touches the hull, TAB! It will piss you off later after a hard sail you find your finally crafted new doors and drawers don't open.... Just my two cents and experience when it comes to older boat refits.....

Nice Kitchen, nice work.. please check the MAST STEP.. that big pole that sits on a base below the flooring.. on old boats they should be inspected that the base is not wood rot or if metal its all about rusted out.. if that goes it means you could lose the mast at the worst possible time.. just have someone check it when your boat is pulled on dry dock.

Like always when I watch your videos, I’m impressed with your carpentry skills and your thinking “ outside the box “, as well as Kristen’s imagination and ability to make you do things.
However, the use of PVC boards might be not the right choice, as the surface is not hard enough, nor scratch resistant to be viable for use as a countertop, and an epoxy coating unfortunately will not stick to PVC, don’t even try to do this ! The only thing I can think of you can do, is glueing a laminate (Formica or similar) on top of the PVC, that will work, and you can (but don’t must) pour tabletop epoxy on top of the laminate for further protection.
Happy Easter to both of you, and continue with your projects !

I wouldn’t trust your test, even if sanding and priming gives you better adhesion than without , but it will not be a long lasting bond. It’s the chemistry which is not right - do it the way I suggested in order to avoid near future problems .

When you bend a PVC strip and melt it to bend it remember that it will deform , thicker , thiner normally. Make it 3mm wider before you bend it , and then shave to the correct level, use a hand block plane. Don’t heat it to quick, just take your time. You can make almost anything with PVC board. I have been doing this for years, i am so glad you found this trick. 👍 well done.

I would sand that pvc with a sharp grit sandpaper like 120 maybe even 80 grit. Epoxy don't stick to pvc very well otherwise. And some how it has to be very level or the epoxy will just pour off the low side. Please keep doing what you are doing! I love your video's.

Keep doing what your doing on your filming. Enjoy the way you are doing it. Love how you guys are not afraid to just go with it and do a project. I always over think way too long and never get anything done

My Main Man Matt. Thats M to the forth power. You have the hart of a Paratropper brother. You get it done. Think you guys should keep posting just like you have them. Not seeing the real deal would leave a big gap in how you got from project to project. Great team work. Great video.

My concerns about the two of you going down the boat rebuilding rabbit hole have been greatly offset by Matt's skills and ability to do a lot with basic tools and materials. Glad to hear your going to address the prop shaft and shaft log. I hope you intend to replace the cutlass bearing as well. You have a shaft strut so the cutlass bearing is in there and should be relatively easy to replace. Shaft alignment is critical. It makes a big difference on the life of the components (shaft seal, cutlass bearing, transmission) as well as vibration. Good Luck. I wish you the best with your project. I did a gut job on two sailboats in Alaska, helped a guy build a 40 foot Trimaran in his back yard and did extensive maintenance on a fourth boat but that was nothing compared to what you two are dealing with.. Thanks for the video. Repair On! 🙂

I do prefer the music over the sound of the power tools. With my earbuds on, the power tool sound just pierces my ears. Nice singing, Matt can carry a tune. Howdy from TX y'all.

I don't care if you answer (though it'd be fun!), I'm just happy to be living vicariously thru your lives. What a great diversion from the regular suck of life--you guys are so enjoyable to watch! Keep up the great work! I'm just so anxious to see you two as you come towards the end.

I helped Fabricate and install some huge countertops into houses, the largest was a Corian top that took 7 of us and removing bay window because the doorway and access was not going to get it done. I seen that look on on your face when you got it inside on our crew's faces when we get something past the tight spot. Make it fit. "Custom Job" Keep moving.

hello guys, I recommend using stainless screws because in a while the ones you put in are going to rust the wood🥲

When it comes to boat projects, too much (information, doing, showing) is never enough. I love the videos you guys are doing about your boat refit. If anything, I would like to see more details.
