  • If you are planning a Greyhound bus trip that is going to last overnight then you might be wondering what to expect. In this video I discuss why I like overnight bus trips, what happens as far as food/restroom breaks after dark, late night layovers, as well as how safe overnight greyhound trips actually are. If you have any additional questions about the Greyhound bus or any other form of frugal travel please leave them in the comment box below.

Hi there, just to let everyone know i work at greyhound, more specifically at the fares and schedules area and if anyone wants to ask a question im willing to answer anything
But just to anser the basic
    1) Kids less than 2 years old can travel free, kids at the age of 2 or above need to pay for a ticket.
    2) since covid we don't have discounts anynore, greyhound changed their policy's and we are not offering any type of discounts :/
    3) a 16 year old can travel without company, by this i mean that if a kid thats 16 years or above buys a greyhound ticket they are able to travel without any type of documentation
    4) we don't really ask out customers to carry on an ID or drivers licence to buy a ticket/aboard the bus, but we recommend you to have the documents needed in case you are crossing the border
    5) if you are taking extra luggage remember to add it when you are buing your ticket, extra luggage costs 19.99$
    6) rescheduling your ticket must be done atleast 15 minutes before bus departure, in any case you are not able to change it you will need to pay an extra amount to change time and date of departure
    7) if you get stranded in another bus station thats not on your ticket, we recommend the customer to go the nearest greyhound bus station to let the staff know you are stranded, we will change your ticket but if you give us a call asking if we can change it for free, we dont be able to do it.
    8) remember that the phone number you call its not customer service, thats the fares and schedules/to schedule your ticket department, if you give us a call regarding a refund, we won't be able to process it because we don't have the necessary tools to make that procedure, that will be with customer service that can be contacted at greyhound page, you'll need to feel out a "request a refund" form and you'll get news within the next 24 to 72 hours post-finalizing the request
    9) we are not responsable if the bus departed earlier than estipulated on your ticket since we recommend our customers to be atleast 30 minutes before departure time on the ticket
    10) its a must to have an email for us to send the ticket, phone number is not necessary
    11) remember that re-scheduling your ticket its reserving a seat on another bus, and a extra payment needs to take place since, like already said, its a different bus and a seat that someone else could've bought at a standard price
    12) remember that when the bus driver makes a stop he/she wont wait for you, if he/she gives 10 minutes, than you got 10 minutes to strecth your legs, go to the bathroom and buy somefood, if the bus driver leaves and your luggage its still on the bus and you give us a call, we won't be avle to contact the bus driver, its not that we're not able to, but its because we don't have the bus driver information, and even so, he/she won't get back to get you because he /she has other passengers than need to make transfers and they need to be on time, if you call us we will recommend you to go at greyhound.com and fill out the "missing luggage" form
    13) ****FARES AND SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE**** we always explain this to our customers because when they give us a call an agent my say a price of a ticket and when he calls us back again asking to the same ticket the price its going to be different, why? Because of demand and depending how full the bus is getting
    14) agentd are humans to, just because you overslept and couldn't be on time at the station doesn't mean the agent you call deserves to be yelled at because of customers fault.

How do drivers who do overnight routes get sleep? Do they sleep it prior to the shift? I’m kinda nervous about my driver not staying awake

I used to go on overnight greyhound trips at least once a month from Los Angeles to Oakland and vise versa i can tell you this never sit in the back and always bring snacks and water. If you sleep wear your socks and wear a sweater. Try to get some sleep because youll wake up at your destination. DO NOT SET AN ALARM !

(Horror story) I traveled to Albuquerque. When we got there, there was an active shooting on the platform so we were rushed to the opposite side of the building. There, we all got mugged. Now, if you don't know, Albuquerque doesn't have an functioning police department due to them defunding it, so when we called 911, we were told they couldn't help us. Greyhound also refused to refund anyone's tickets. It was an absolute nightmare and I still have scars from where my jewelry was ripped out.

Next month I'm visiting my best friend in college. I'll be heading to Colorado from Texas. I'm actually not worried about anything happening ON the bus, but sorta nervous about the transfers (I have 1 transfer going and 1 transfer heading back) I also have 1 super long layover (5:15 a.m. to 12:01 p.m.) in Dallas, almost 7 hours... I'm 20 and I've never even rode on a bus in general so I'm extremely nervous because I have no idea what I'm doing lol...I've binged watched a few of your videos and they seem like they'll be extremely helpful, so thank you so much for making these!! Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

I had several overnight Greyhound & Megabus journeys and they still sometimes have food/drink/break stops during the overnight hours. Sometimes it was at a Denny's, Pilot, Flying J, or an actual terminal. Always have somethign to drink on the bus in particular. I go with spring water and Gatorade. Get a new bottle at each terminal even if you have not finished your previous as the next stop may not be for many hours. Also, maybe use the stations to download your next round of streaming music or video over their WiFi onto your tablet or phone so that when ont he bus you don't get skipping in the cellular dead zones.

I did several NYC to LA & San Diego, Greyhound trip. This was back when you could still drink 🍺 & 🚬 on the Bus. There were so many interesting things that happened. The DEA & FBI were waiting for our Bus in Pittsburgh. The seats are brutal for 3 days. Greyhound did have 1 Bus you always tried to get on. There were no Passenger Pickups once we left NYC all the way to LA. I did this bus most of the trips. A few times, the Bus was brand new & we were taking it on its first trip. Its not the same Greyhound today

Greyhound is changing. Major bus stations are closing and moving to city bus and light rail stations. Are they preparing for a Post-Pandemic Tide wave of ridership when things return to normal and millions of people wanting to travel after being cooped up in their homes and all forms of public transportation just explodes 100 fold with ridership.

So as to trip. Dinner break was at truck stop in PA and it was nice with decent food choices. 2 hour layover in Cleveland. Safe depot food concession open all night plus vending machines. Not comfortable seating so not easy to sleep. On way back dinner break then 1 1/2 hours in Cleveland then snack break in wee hours in same truck stop in PA then to port authority. Crowded but you’re right most people were sleeping on bus.

luckily i've never had an overnight trip where i'd have to spend several hours at a terminal. at worst i'd spend time in a station for almost 2 hours to wait for a new driver on a schedule same coach. i'd be a little antsy if overnight i'm at a terminal and knew i needed sleep and it would be difficult to do so.

Been enjoying your videos. Would love to travel more than I actually do. Usually when I travel a few hundred miles, I drive my own car. However, like you, I am a big guy, and I would not pay huge money to fly less than 1000 miles if a good bus option is available. As far night vs. day. You trade the view for quiet, less traffic, and sleeping hours of travel away. I can sleep on the bus, but not continuously for hours. I enjoy the stops. Chance to use an outside BR, buy a snack, and the fresh air is great. Even if it's freezing cold, it's only for a short time, and it's a nice burst of stimulation. So, bus by night is a pretty good option.

I appreciate the video...and I agree with your thoughts about the overnight trips....BUT.....I ust got back from a Greyhound bus trip from Indiana to South Carolina and it was an experience to say the least. I couldn't sleep...it was so uncomfortable....I'm not a big person 6'0 190lbs....The first bus driver was rude and cold natured and wow it was hot on the bus...the second and third bus drivers were much more friendly and made the trip tolerable. There was one guy who had some mental issues...It was a mode of transportation I would recommend.

I’m going on an overnight bus from Chicago to New York. I’m a little nervous because it’s my first trip out my state. I’m going to bring some snacks from home lol.

I always go to Mexico every year on a bus but not greyhound and the bus overnight is the best 😂 I don’t have bus stations I just wait in a part of a store area at like 4 in the morning 😂

At the moment I would give everything in the world for a bad trip on a Greyhound buss! Much better than this (necessary) selfisolation during the Corona crisis!

I enjoy sitting in the back of the bus overnight. More laid back people back there. Good parties occassionaly.

We are overseas, could you do a clip on comparison of ticket prices between Greyhound, Amtrak and one or two low budget airlines. You could give the figures as percentages rather than true figures. It will give us an idea of travel costs in the US, thanks.

Hey Thankyou just what I wanted. Live in Australia healthy 72yrs booked for all September in nyc. Been there long time ago so would like to do bus overnighters to anywhere and back to nyc. Can sleep through anything. Once travelled Europe by Eurail which meant new city each morning without hotels between. Love to do Canada and back. Southern states and back. (Not California side US). Have hostel app on my phone. Love reading
Any suggestions pls. I’ll put you up if ever you visit Australia

What to expect on a greyhound overnight trip? You will be hungry, restless, and horny, whatever drug your looking for is available on the stations premises, prostitution, weapons, wanted fugitives, I've ridden the greyhound for years and believe me people have been abducted while on a layover, even killed at a greyhound station, ride at your own risk

Similar to overnight on National Express or Megabus coach in UK, if tired enough I grab couple hours sleep, though my journey is about 4.5 hours, we don’t have 24 hour journeys in UK unless travelling to European cities etc.
