5:22 to 5:36 make me want to throw up in my mouth. No one had control like Maynard Ferguson. I always show people this clip and watch their eyes fall out of their heads. My dad showed this to me on VHS when I was 3. I never forgot it and Maynard and my dad were the inspirations for playing trumpet and Maynard's music has always been so beautiful and powerful to me. I was so lucky to drive around and play with him before he died.
assignmentearth who is that playing drums???? I originally thought that it was Steve weiste but he's a trombone player. Please if you know tell me who is playing drums here!!
this is an incredible live performance of this tune...this is a classic case of the live version of "Portuguese Love" being infinitely better than the very weak studio version on the "Hollywood" album...that entire album is just plain bad...the sound on that album has a phony, "canned" sound.

that solo was damn near perfect!
What a beautiful tune, and so well played...you have to admire MF, he seemed utterly unafraid to reach for any note.
As arranged by Steve Wiest!
WOW!!!!
Nelson Hill on Sax
I still say, that crazy coked out drummer, Steve Wiest, Stan Mark, Dennis DiBlasio,...Greatness! My favorite Maynard band. Too great!

Strictly Nuclear!
I wasn’t familiar with that tune. Also had Chris Braymen on trombone.
Maynard is better than Kodak black
