I was able to see Jon Jon as the Engineer on Broadway, the evening after the opening. My daughter and I waited outside afterwards for the cast to come out, and we were both able to have our picture taken with Jon Jon; it was so exciting!! (P.S. Jon Jon was also awesome in the series about the murder of Gianni Versace.)
Lea was the soul in the original Miss Saigon, but in this version of Miss Saigon Jon Jon is fucking amazing, he is the soul of the show

He truly has set the bar for any future Engineers....and it's a high one. His back story is fantastic as well.
He provides some comedic moments in the musical. I mean in the 2tth anniversary filmed show, the audience laughs after quite a few of his lines. He is so funny and amazing

Les Miserables shades it as the greatest ever Broadway/West End musical for me, but Miss Saigon comes a close second. Great talent on show here. Love it.

I watched the DVD last year. Briones was excellent and gave a fabulous performance as the Engineer.

I do like Miss Saigon, it's my 3rd favourite musical and I saw the new production at the Prince Edward Theatre in London on Thursday 2nd January 2015 in a matinee performance and it was brilliant and spectacular

Did the audience not like this performance? They were stone cold the whole time. I can only imagine their face just like confused and uncomfortable during The Engineer's performance.

Nah they tone down the audience for the recording. Also Michael wasn’t mocking the performance - he was just making a joke about (with it being a performance in front of royalty) that he’s been told to keep his jokes clean and PC - but in one musical performance they can say tits, ass and hump a car! The American Dream!

It might be because of how dirty the theme of the song The American Dream is if going PG was the goal of the segment. This version is toned down, but it’s still highly inappropriate, because that’s the whole deal of the song. The Engineer is singing about what he sees the American Dream as, and since he sells girls’ bodies for a living, it’s no surprise that he sees the American Dream as what is related to his occupation, which is operating a business of prostitution. Even when it was toned down specifically for this show, it still made me uncomfortable, in a sense that the song accomplished its goal. I suppose the host was just saying that like “sorry if that made you uncomfortable, I know this might not be hat you were expecting but yeah that’s that”
He actually apologises to the Royalty who are in the audience, and it’s meant to be family friendly 😂

Am I the only one who thinks this song is such a weird part of the show? Like, it's right before Kim dies and we have people singing and dancing around a car. It has nothing to do with the story.
That's precisely why it works. The number there to serve as a contrast to a tragic conclusion which is about to occur to a main character.
