Ylva, I have a question about the way you pronounce the long "î" sound in stressed syllables. The way you do it seems to be easier for me to imitate "liten" "vaccin" "prosodi" "medicin" maybe I have been trying to imitate the Stockholm version where it seems to be quite exaggerated? Would you say the way you pronounce it is not quite typical of the whole of Sweden but only of certain parts?
"i" is usually not a pronounciation problem since the sound exists in most other languages, but often as one sound not long and short. I don't think my pronounciation is different from what you normally hear in Stockholm. I have asked other people to listen to this and they don't think there is anything special about my "i" pronounciation. (When I teach I always tell my student to exaggerate because they often are not aware of the length and when they think they are exaggerating it sounds fine.)
@@svenskamedylvaThank you for your kind reply. I usually have no problem with the length of the vowel, I am just having a difficult time adjusting the quality. I have watched many videos on tongue positioning in the mouth to articulate the sound as close to the more typical Swedish way as possible. You sound like another author, Kajsa Ingemarsson, to me. She pronounced the 'sj" sound also like you. I am still not 100% ready to start writing fluently in Swedish so I keep writing in English to all my Swedish speaking RUclips friends I meet! I am somewhere in the A2 level currently, and I'm self-teaching from various resources. I am trying to absorb the language as much as I can by listening to 1 to 2 hours of Swedish radio per day. Besides Nyheter på lätt svenska, Ekot and Klartext I try to tune into various radio stations from around Sweden, not just Stockholm, but also Göteborg, Malmö, Umeå to get the feel for how language is spoken in various parts of the country. To my great joy, YLE radio in Helsingfors also started their version of Nyheter på lätt (finlands)svenska recently, and now I have a consistent way to hear finlandssvenska in an easier form as well. How I usually start my day is listening to the news in Swedish in the easy / clear version as well as looking at the text of the same news that the radio narrators are reading from. I find the source material to be easier because I'm already familiar with this information in English because it's usually the news that is covered in English on the same day, so I have some prior understanding of what is being talked about. I then try to look up any words that I keep hearing a lot and I still do not know the translation of, but I try not to look them up right away but try and guess the meaning from the context if I'm almost sure about the meaning. I keep listening the next day and the next to see if I can hear the word again used in a similar context. If I give up and cannot think of what the meaning would be then I look it up in the dictionary. At the end of my listening session, I try to listen to the day's News bulletin pronounced at normal speed with more difficult language, just like a native Swede would, usually Dagens Eko or Rapport på SVT. I have subscribed to your channel because you have some valuable material in your videos!
