You were in danger once those two other sharks showed up.
During my 40+ years of diving, I have had a fair amount of experiences with dozens of different types of sharks - Great Whites, Tigers, Lemons, Blues, Makos, Hammerheads, Thresher, Sand Tigers, Bill Sharks, etc.
Have a couple suggestions for you and your buddies:
    1. Use a longer stringer for the fish you shot so it puts a fair distance between you and the dead fish. In the one shot, it shows the dead fish hanging just above your ass. If a shark hits, your are literally running the risk of losing a butt cheek of two.
    2. Carry a Shark Billy with you at all times. It is simply a 2-3 foot piece of dowling with at least a 16-penny nail on the end. Drive the nail in then cut the head off and grind or file it to a sharp point.
I have had the same one for more than 20 years and it has served me well. Just push the sharks away when they get too close. Best to hit them in the tip of their nose (it doesn't hurt them as shark skin is very tough - in fact during Colonial times, American cabinetmakers used shark skin for sandpaper).
That is a very sensitive area and I think it has something to do with their highly sensitive Ampullae of Lorenzini - the large jelly-filled pores that receive changes in electrical current generated by every living creature in the ocean.
    3. You violated the first cardinal rule of diving when you stayed behind to film the sharks. NEVER dive alone. You literally need at least one (1) extra pair of eyes and ears in the water. When those two (2) other sharks showed up, you are very lucky you didn't get hit. You might never have ever seen the one that bit you.
    (4) As soon as you spear a fish, get it out of the water ASAP. Sharks can sense electrical impulses of a wounded/dying fish from miles away (Ampullae of Lorenzini).
    Hope that helps.
One of my biggest dreams is to dive the Great Barrier Reef in Australia (my older brother lived in Darwin in the Northern Territories for a year and loved it and the real "Crocodile Dundee" Aussies) and dive with Orcas in New Zealand.
    Someday...
Thanks for sharing and be safe out there.

I don’t have as much experience as you, but you gave great advice and I agree with you 100%. @@danielrhodesfolio Yeah they can be so damn sneaky. But I feel like many fish kind of have a sense of at what distance they’re on the edge of vision in different situations. In so many shark videos you see a shark circling, then apparently swimming away and then turning right on the edge and doing a straight approach. But I’ve seen garfish use the top 3 feet of seawater to hide in for a curious approach because a light clay silt in that layer it would disperse the sunlight and create a sort of haze which they would appear to use for cover. Whenever I hunt for pollock or cod there may be a school of small to medium ones visible, but the bigger more cautious ones will always be right over the edge of vision. They’ll be around for sure but only show themselves after a while, just like they’ll be the first to leave a spot if something seems out of whack. But I’ve had oceanic white tips sneak up on me while scubadiving in 40 metre viz as well. Tricksy.

If no spearfishing had taken place none of this wouldve happenned. When your friend spearfished the blood and oil of the fishes got on you as well as he was nearby, so the sharks smell that from very far and so you were food for them because they smelled the fish oil and blood on you. Awesome video though!! People say its dangerous to surf because of the seal lookalike from a sharks point of view, but id say spearfishing is right up there. The only reason there arent as many attacks is because the spearfishers are in the water and expecting it unlike the surfers!

This video is now over 5 years old but it popped up on my screen so what the heck. I am sure by now you have had many diving adventures since this was made. Where I live we have bull sharks, lots of them. It is not uncommon to see one. I spearfish a lot and I usually dive alone bc we all take turns going down and shooting fish. Once I saw that first shark "Circling You" I knew more than likely that stinker was up to no good. Good job staying calm, it is not as easy as it looks for sure. I absolutely never go diving in my area without my speargun, ever. Bulls are pretty aggressive and extremely stubborn. I like the idea of carrying a Shark Billy as a backup just make sure you put a cork or something on the end of the nail so you do not accidentally pop yourself with it. Good vid man!

The best way to tell if a shark is pissed is the way it's pectoral fins are pointed. If they're straight out, the animal's calm and just wants to tell you about our lord and savior, the megalodon; if they're getting close to 45 degrees downward, it's getting agitated.
I don't *think* you were in that much danger, they were probably just curious, but at the end of the day, even the sharks who like to be pet and cuddled by humans are powerful killers and need to be approached with caution. Overall, I think you made the right choices by keeping calm, continuing to keep an eye on them, trying to get them to leave, and just trying to get out of the water.

I guess next time you will spot when the first shark was agitated. Basically if you see their tail flapping they are going to be a handful. They can glide fast enough with their tails seemingly not moving. I doubt you were in a great deal of danger but there was scope for something to go wrong. What you did really well was to keep eyeballing the first shark. Fin kicking was not a good idea. I can say that without criticizing as I have also flapped hard enough in shark encounter to break a fin.

@@danielrhodesfolio I think you did well mate. Eyeballing them was the way to go. TBH it was just bad luck. (99% sure their behaviour was territorial and not predatory. I have seen whalers act like that when a fish is shot where they were hunting. If they are like the whalers in NZ they might have rammed you, and would do that way before biting. Don't let it put you off. Territoriality also explains why there were a few around. Also, they get bolder when they outnumber you. See 3:22 what a ram looks like. Not interested in the fish just want to chase you off.

@@kiwibloke2000 Yeah you understand the situation a lot more than most. Most people just say... "It's your fault for having the fish on your belt" etc... I had no fish. It was the fact the sharks were stirred from others with fish. I think you are right, they were pretty much just muscling me out of there territory.
