A big contrast in landscape from one day to the next. Great to see how the different brands of tent and other gear hold up to in field real harsh testing
I know the kit I buy is up to the job but it’s always good to see it in action in bad weather. Both tents were absolutely solid all night. You have to take the good with the bad when it comes to conditions. I enjoy it all to be honest. Appreciate the comment mate. ATB.
I’m impressed how solid the Kuiu was in them high winds, I’ve the original Hilleberg Allak for seventeen years and the door panels would bow in under such winds but not fail.
The Storm Star is a TANK of a tent and I genuinely believe it’s structurally stronger than the Allak 2 with 9mm poles. The Allak would have to have the 10.25mm poles to compete with the KUIU. You can’t beat Hilleberg build quality but the KUIU is still very well made. It becomes even more impressive when you consider that the Storm Star is a fraction of the price of an Allak. I only paid £410 for the KUIU which is an absolute steal of a price. It’s such a hard tent to beat mate, I’m very impressed with it. I would definitely like to see the Storm Star and the Allak side by side in some heavy winds though for sure, it would be really interesting. Thanks for the comment mate, appreciate it. ATB.
It’s a great spot mate. Camped there quite a few times when I’ve wanted more of a chilled camp but still with really good views. Thanks for commenting man. ATB.
Cracking video as always mate! 🔥 Shame about the poor sausage 🤣 My kind of camp that 👀 Unsure how Haydon walks everywhere in a t shirt in winter 🤣 keep them coming mate! Quality stuff! ATB 👌🏼
Absolutely gutted I forgot that smoked sausage to add to my meal. I bet you were laughing seeing us get smashed for once and not getting a nice sunset/sunrise. You usually get all the bad weather not me. Appreciate the support as always brother. ATB.
I’m very happy with the tent. Everyone wants different things from a tent so just think about what it is you actually want from a tent in terms of features and how much you’re wanting to spend. If you don’t want to spend the money on a Hilleberg, that’s absolutely fine because there are other really good options on the market like the KUIU Storm Star. The KUIU is still a very strong and capable tent that will suit anyone who buys one. It’s a fraction of the price of an Allak 2 for example and arguably structurally stronger. The Storm Star is right up there with the likes of Hilleberg without a doubt. However, if you’re after the best of the best when it comes to build quality using the best materials on the market then look no further than a Hilleberg. So basically, it all depends what you’re looking for from a tent. Thanks for commenting mate. ATB.
I’ve camped there quite a few times so we’ve had the good weather as well as the bad. It’s a really good spot with insane views when you consider how easy the route is. Thanks for commenting mate. ATB.
Top video Tom! Proper testing conditions for two proper tents! I think the kuiu is more than capable enough to be in the conversation with the soulo and tbh as it's a two person........the allak aswell. I'll be honest though I don't think the allak would stand a chance along side the kuiu in similar conditions. Materials are better for sure but structurally the allak is a blancmange 🤣 Enjoy your stuff mate. Take care. Adge
I was talking about the exact same thing a few days ago to one of my mates. I’d love to see it side by side with an Allak 2 in some testing conditions. The build quality on both tents is very good but you can’t beat Hilleberg build quality. However, my money would definitely be on the Storm Star if I was to compare it to an Allak 2 with 9mm poles in terms of which would be structurally stronger. It would be better to compare it to an Allak 2 with 10.25mm poles to be honest, that would be a lot closer. But when you take into account the price of the KUIU (especially the price I got it for) compared to an Allak, it’s very hard to beat. It’s a phenomenal tent. Appreciate you commenting mate. ATB.
@@tomphythianI say it just about everywhere on the socials.......the kuiu is king when ALL things considered. Btw imagine the kuiu with those same 10.25mm dac poles.......Petra would need to change her underwear 😮😂
Great video again Tom......how small can you get the Kuiu to pack ? what size stuff sack can you get it into without struggling ? It definately appeals to me , its just the footprint size that you need including space to guy it out and the only time i seen one in its pack it looked like a fair size bundle 🤔 From the sounds of it you even get a Land Line 😜
You have to think about footprint size on any larger tents so that isn’t really an issue to be honest. I just always make sure I know there’s room to pitch by doing some proper research. If I’m going somewhere I haven’t been before like places in Scotland for example and I’m not sure if there’s going to be room, I just take my Hilleberg Soulo just to be on the safe side due to it’s smaller footprint. In terms of pack size of the KUIU, it’s not got the smallest pack size but I wouldn’t say it’s terrible, it’s expected with that sort of tent. A 30L dry bag would be absolutely fine, I can get it to a pretty good size. Somewhere inbetween a football and a basketball but slightly thinner because you can mould it into different shapes. Fits in my 58L pack with full winter kit just fine. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting man. ATB.
I’m lucky enough to own both and it’s a serious combination of tents. There’s no better tent at doing what the Soulo is designed to do with its small footprint and the KUIU is seriously impressive. I’d love to see it up against an Allak 2 in 60/70mph winds. My money would be on the Storm Star for sure, it’s that good of a tent. Thanks for the comment mate, really appreciate it. ATB.
Glad you didn’t have any pegging issues 😂 Jealous need to get out and make a video soon, we had so little snow and I hate going out in rain, ended up buying a rab positron pro jacket couldn’t wait to find TNF on offer.
Making sure all the guys and pegs are solid is key mate. Checked them a couple of times throughout the night as well just to be on the safe side. The RAB Positron looks like a really good jacket mate, I’m sure it’ll sort you out. Appreciate you commenting man. ATB.
I'm planning on summitting this week. Do you think i need an ice axe. I don't have crampons but have microspikes. Let me know what you think and whether there are any technical sections that need winter mountaineering skills
If you mean summitting Brandreth then you won’t be needing an ice axe due to the route being pretty straight forward with no technical sections at all. You won’t be needing crampons either, micro spikes will do the job nicely. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting mate. ATB.

Great video again mate you get the best of views looking down 2 valleys from Brandreath camped there myself last year .

@tomphythian I'm looking for a 4 season tent and what i saw of yours mate its up there so will be looking in to your tent more and thanks for that .
It’s a very underrated spot that and easy to reach. Unfortunately I couldn’t see a thing the only time I camped there 🤨

@adge_ventures4915 agree and the Kuiu is about half the price.

Well done for sticking it out boys, lesser men would have bailed. But lesser men don't have two of the most bomb proof tents for UK weather.
