Glorious game. Extremely underrated. If there was a game that deserved some push to showcase "empowerment" and "redemption". This is one of them. Story and art was great. Soundtrack fits right in the theme. And you really feel like being in another "psychotic" world.
American McGee is theoretically licensing his game IP from EA (which owns it). I say theoretically cause he's still in negotiations. Apparently he's in pre production of what could be an Alice prequel, called "Asylum"- He has a RUclips channel from which he regularly streams (once a month) with updates. He is still located in China, which makes things not the easiest, but perhaps could end in a less expensive production.
Loved this game, the design, the story, the symbolism, all were great. The only downside was the levels. They were WAY too long and i was exhausted by the end of the game, but i did get through it to see the end of the story.
Yeah, the atmosphere and art design were fantastic. Every new world looked really distinct and beautiful, but you can tell they were pressed for time to fill up the levels with unique things beyond the long platforming sections and basic combat encounters, so they all felt pretty padded out before the end. Looking at the art book and concept work makes me think that they had a lot more planned out for it originally, but I guess EA wasn't going to budge on deadlines.
Easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing games I've ever played, love it to death. The game itself is pretty solid as well, even if the controls area bit janky at times.
Still one of the most underrated titles of that generation. This is one of those games I always bring up whenever somebody asks, "Are video games a form of art?" Thank you for revisiting this, Matt. It's worth playing all the way through.
Oh yeah Alice in Wonderland is definetelly public domain. Note that “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There,” are in the public domain. The works were published before January 1, 1923, and are in the public domain worldwide because Carroll died in 1898, more than 100 years ago.Nov 2, 2015
To those who complain about length. I'm sorry I do not agree whatsoever the games length was perfect. I don't have the attention span of a rodent where I need to switch to something else so quickly I like to enjoy the ride. What's beautiful is there so much to take in in the environments. The game only takes too long if you suck at third person platformers anyways. This game has a very good fluid combat that is very addicting like how Nier Automata was. Keeps you on your toes with certain hard enemies.
According to an FAQ video American McGee published like a year ago or so, he wants to port both Alice games to the Switch, so maybe you'll get your wish.
This game is definitely worth finishing. The story is very compelling, the graphics, the levels and the visuals are gorgeous and there are loads of secrets.
The Vorpal blade's the best, isn't it? I bought a replica of it a while back. I keep it on a shelf in my bookcase, with Lewis Carroll's books behind it. He's probably rolling in his grave :D
The McGee games is owned by EA. The kickstarter was used to buy back the IP but McGee lost his studio in 2016. There's talks of a prequel with concept art, but even then, the years between games is too wide.
Yes, the major drawback was that it was too long. They could have shortened it by at least 2 hours. A lot of the platforming requires Cuphead-level precision so to have 10+ hours of that is a little crazy.
I'd like to see more of this if only to give credit for the game designers trying their hardest to make Wonderland figures extra creepy. That Mouse dialogue though...whew! That was rough!
Speaking of American McGee, have you ever checked out American McGee's Scrapland? It's a mess, but kind of fun (at least I remember it being fun). It also set my graphics card on fire, so that had a lasting impact on me.
Keep it rollin' Matt. This is a great game, not perfect, but lots of style. Honestly my favorite level is the 4th one, but I do agree, some levels go on for too long. When he said, "Bosses" I couldn't help, but chuckle.
Alice in the Wonderland is public domain, the American McGee Kickstarter is still on. It's about Alice's time in the Asylum, taking before the first game, don't know if you played it.
More alice please! Also I was forced to watch dark crystal on netflix, it was boring from like..4 episodes in until it actually became interesting enough to power through lmao
As the son of a Brit, and having been to England not all that long ago, I can vouch for English food being terrible. EXCEPT for fish and chips, the world’s greatest cuisine
I would love to see more of Alice Madness Returns. And I also did not care for the Dark Crystal series on Netflix, in fact I only got through one episode before giving up.
what happens when EA is the publisher and forces you to release the game before the long levels are fully filled with more unique enemies and elements and bosses? This
Played this game way back. It's pretty decent but yeah a couple of flaws. I think for how long the game is, there's not enough ideas or the ideas it does have aren't really pushed all that much. Also, the game has a really bad habit of teasing a boss fight and not giving it to you. I'm guessing they were originally planned but were cut cause it really feel like there's should be more bosses
All Gelflings look the same??? Dude, that’s gelflingist lol. Seriously though, you need to watch the Dark Crystal show, once you get to episode 4 the story really picks up the pace.
Hell yeah. More More More I love this game. It a hard one to find as well. My ex roommate has this for her Xbox 360 and her and I would take turns playing it. We never got to finish tho. Unfortunately we came on some financial hardships and had to sell the system and games
Pls just keep playing this game. The aesthetic is so up your alley it's not even funny. The story is really interesting [though a bit heavy handed in the endgame imho].
I really wanted to love this game, but it's got a few pretty big problems. The world is far too big and not fun to get around. You have a goddamn quadruple jump! Collectibles and upgrades don't really do anything important. NO BOSS BATTLES!? The setup for nearly 4 or 5 bosses, but no payoff at all. I'm curious if American has learned his lesson for the new one he's working on.
Glorious game. Extremely underrated. If there was a game that deserved some push to showcase "empowerment" and "redemption". This is one of them.
Story and art was great. Soundtrack fits right in the theme. And you really feel like being in another "psychotic" world.
Alice in Wonderland is indeed in public domain. Thankfully it entered it long before Disney lobbied to extend the duration of IP copyright

Thx for the Update....
With EA nothing is easy...
The Alice IP rest in peace with Dead Space and Mass Effect...
@@TheHalloweenSpirit *cough* *cough* Dungeon Keeper 3 *cough*
"An American McGee in China" sounds like a movie title
Always been a fan of this Alice design, looks so dark and badass. There needs to be more games with her.
Happy to see you coming back to this
You actually fought him (Mad Hatter) as a boss in the first game.. hence the "in pieces" comment =P
Loved this game, the design, the story, the symbolism, all were great. The only downside was the levels. They were WAY too long and i was exhausted by the end of the game, but i did get through it to see the end of the story.
You persevered where I stumbled, I was stopped at the queens invisible card gates and gave up there

matt, you have more mid air jumps than you seem to think you do
Yeah, I realized that later. I just always HOLD the button for the float.
Yeah, you can jump like seven times in this game, haha.
@@squall2002 You can jump a total of four times in case anybody stumbles across this comment.
@@CrankyMoogle (Y) True. I was just exaggerating a bit as a joke :P
Yes! Please do a full play through!
I wonder if he'll ever realise he can both air dash and jump four times in the air.
but no ledge grab. MDK had it. Fur Fighters had it. the original game had it!
edit wait did fur fighters have it...?
It sounds cliche but, I would legitimately watch a full play through of this by Matt.
Easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing games I've ever played, love it to death. The game itself is pretty solid as well, even if the controls area bit janky at times.
Still waiting for that 3rd sequel.
Third sequel? What are the names of the two sequels that were released then?
3:20 "Every boss"
About that...
This game was and continues to be an obsession. Quintessential late 2000s design!!!
Still one of the most underrated titles of that generation. This is one of those games I always bring up whenever somebody asks, "Are video games a form of art?"
Thank you for revisiting this, Matt. It's worth playing all the way through.
Glad you revisited this game. You really want to see the ending...just saying.
"Now I need a brain to get over there apparently."
Bruh.
Oh yeah Alice in Wonderland is definetelly public domain.

Matt, please play more of this. Its SO good.
Oh I remember this game, it is very underrated and I am glad you are making a video about it!

Awesome! I love when you return to prior titles
I love this game so much wish it’d come to switch

all i can say is upgrade the hammer all the way, cool's looking hammer i ever saw, when upgraded.

no time to sit no time to chat. i'm searching for alice and i've lost my hat
The Vorpal blade's the best, isn't it? I bought a replica of it a while back. I keep it on a shelf in my bookcase, with Lewis Carroll's books behind it. He's probably rolling in his grave :D
handsome jack is the only villain that off the top of my head is fun enough to not get annoying throwing quips at you every few minutes.
I believe Alice is public domain but the American McGee version is own by EA if I’m not mistaken
"Welcome back Matt, to the garden of madness." I say in a thick french accent.
The McGee games is owned by EA. The kickstarter was used to buy back the IP but McGee lost his studio in 2016.
There's talks of a prequel with concept art, but even then, the years between games is too wide.
keep playing Matt, you're already down the rabbit hole, why not stay a while?
Yes, the major drawback was that it was too long. They could have shortened it by at least 2 hours. A lot of the platforming requires Cuphead-level precision so to have 10+ hours of that is a little crazy.
This has made my day, thank you sir :)
if you're not on edge- you're taking up too much space
So happy your playing this again Matt! 👌
You're missing the jumps because you don't have a double jump. You have an octuple jump.

I'd like to see more of this if only to give credit for the game designers trying their hardest to make Wonderland figures extra creepy. That Mouse dialogue though...whew! That was rough!
Really happy you came back to this game :)
If "sherlock holmes" is public domain, what it actually is, "Alice" is too!
This game looks amazing still!
Speaking of American McGee, have you ever checked out American McGee's Scrapland? It's a mess, but kind of fun (at least I remember it being fun).
It also set my graphics card on fire, so that had a lasting impact on me.
American is trying to get his third installment Alice: Asylum approved right noe
Hey, Matt! Please for the love of video games in general, do more of this game!

Oh yes PLEASE do more of this game! I adored it when I played it.
God if only they remastered the first game and this and brought them back to Steam, I'd be throwing money at my screen right now
sure some one said this but for long jumps you need to doge too.
If this gets back on Steam I might give it a try.

I've been waiting for this to come back. If you can you should def give 1 a try.
