  • Ford Bronco Power Steering gearbox rebuild also F-Series 100 to 350, 4x4, 1973-1980.
    Part-3 (final)
Note: On vacuum bleeding, this works because the air pockets deep in the steering box will be drawn out through the passages and ports containing fluid acting as a stopper. The voids that were once air pockets, now vacuum pockets will be replaced with fluid when the vacuum is released because fluid in the reservoir and pump is the only thing available to replace the vacuum.
The AYR Cave Shop is my home man cave garage. Content includes: Obtaining tools and machines (mostly older), Cleaning up and restoring them within the limitations of a basic home shop, End goal is having a nice environment for retirement projects. I do my own automotive repairs, some of that will be included. I do a bit of Volvo Penta marine outdrive repairs as well. Mostly I’m working on projects to improve the shop. Biggest challenge is finding space, and oh yeah time. I enjoy the outdoors, hunting and some fishing, so some of that may show up on the channel. You may be wondering what’s up with the channel name; AYR Cave. When trying to think of a channel name I was also doing some research on our family clan name history. That led me to the town of AYE located in the Ayrshire region of Scotland, beautiful countryside and history, seemed like a good fit, even though we live in the USA. Machining is new to me, so expect to see improper procedures and mistakes. I’ve been a gearhead since an early age say 6 or 7 started taking things apart, went through the muscle car building phase back in the 60-70’s. My career has been in industrial HVAC service and construction that covers an incredible variety of machinery, electrical, electronic and automation equipment. I’m looking forward to full retirement, spending more time with the family, grandkids and of course the shop. Many thanks for checking out the channel…Dean

I can’t thank you enough for showing how you bleed the power steering system. I used your method on a friend’s 79’ Bronco that I replaced the power steering pump on. I thought the replacement pump was bad, but turned out to be air in the system. Thanks again!!!

Your welcome Larry, thanks for the view and comment. It also takes quite a bit of driving to finally purge the last bits of trapped air..FYI

Nice work Dean. Surprised you had to go through all that to get the air out but looks like you got it. Always enjoy your content. Gary

All started with an unexpected failure of the high pressure hose. Had to drive it home 30 miles with the system dry. was working ok till then. Seals were leaking so it was due anywise.
      Thanks...

I've found it's best to hold the adjusting stud with a screwdriver and loosen the nut with a wrench so you don't have to adjust later, but only if someone hasn't messed with it before unlike yours. You can unscrew the cap while holding the stud as well. Also wouldn't it be easier to put all of the teflon o rings on from the smaller side of the pill bottle, push them all to the larger side where you were having trouble getting them on, and then put the bottle on and work them over instead of with the vacuum extension? I haven't tried it yet so I don't even know if that is possible. I remember these being a huge struggle on the last one I did, but I either used worm clamps or zipties and waited a day. I'm pretty sure I used zip ties though and tightened them just enough to hold it down flush but also so that you could slide the zip tie off and not get stuck on the groove. Then you could just cut it and go on to the next one without having to wait days for them to shrink.

To install the seals from the small end requires removing the thrust bearing and nut. That's not easy since the thrust bearing nut is highly staked "deformed" to prevent it from loosing. Unless the thrust bearing is bad I would not mess with it.

@@TheAyrCaveShop I just finished mine. I ended up stretching them over the front carefully and ran a zip tie under it so I could keep it from getting stuck in the wrong groove. Using zip ties backwards with the smooth surface inwards I was able to shrink them back down a decent bit and I was able to finish them off leaving them with hose clamps with a backer to keep it from cutting a groove into the ring. I played with it a little bit with medium pressure and was able to get it to slide in. I took it out and did it twice just to make sure it was fine which a small amount of force seems to be okay. I never touched the thrust bearing but I was able to make my 4 prong nut tool with a 1 3/4 ID ID exhaust pipe and a 1 1/2 socket and an angle grinder and it actually fit really well.

Man alot of work there. Good job on it. I wonder if saginaw boxes are just as bad to rebuild?

From what I researched the Saginaw has some very delicate adjustments to make adding to the complexity. Thanks for the view Tom !

Great video and by the way do you know the brand of the power steering box? I've been unable to find what brand I have a 1985F250 thanks

Hi Robert, Mine is a genuine Ford Box. They used this style although with different shaft lengths and clocking of the hydraulic fittings My 1972 F250 has the same box but lines are clocked different.
The Saginaw (they used some of them) box has a BIG snap ring on the end.

How did you install the ball bearings back into the cylinder and worm gear?

    • @TheAyrCaveShop
      @TheAyrCaveShop  Год назад

Its quite easy. Just do it on a baking tray in case you drop one. Lay it the bench horz. with the worm inserted and recirc. holes up, feed them in one by one. wiggle and turn the shaft. The last one or two you can place in the transfer tube while installing the screws.

@@TheAyrCaveShop The saginaw I did before had half light gray balls and half dark gray balls and you were supposed to alternate colors one by one. Is this design the same or are the balls the same? The reason behind the color difference was actually slightly different diameter balls on that one, not sure of the purpose though. 1972 Mustang Coupe.
