    Learned to drive in a truck just like this....
    when ever I miss my dad, I just watch this video, takes me back to riding with him. I played this for my mom, she started crying.... “ I miss your dad! “

      I used to ride in an L 9000 with this same engine back in the early 80s, I would help my uncle on his route of delivering alcohol and wine to liquor 🥃 store's in southern Minnesota, we would listen to country music 🎵.

    I worked for a leasing company that had 10 GMC Brigadiers single axles leased onto a metal can manufacturer. Same setup with 6-71 with 10 speeds. You would go thru 5 gears just driving it from the lot into the shop! Loved that sound.

    All of us drove them during this era know the HOSE clamp was FACTORY equipment Lol .!
    I rubbed my eye one night in 1980 & got a piece of metal in it from the hose clamp off the 10 sp. road ranger 671 Detroit
    Dr. Had to dig out. Lol.

    I remember the ads back in the mid 1960's when Ford Motor Company was bragging about their better ideas. Detroit Diesel power in big Ford trucks was far and away the best one of all.

If you've seen the movie Saving Private Ryan you know what I mean. My gut feeling tells me you served for your country which is a huge salute to you

      Yea with the clutch anyone can drive. Thats a big enough truck you only use the clutch 1 time. To start. To stop you do a rollimg stop in 1st or you pop in neutral when you downshift all your gears

    What beautiful music !! Wish our LNs had these Detroits but most of them had 3208 Cats or 534 gas engines. I miss those days (1976-1990) Must be nice to come to work with a singing truck awaiting every day.

      @bobbyhenderson8603 After gas hit over $1.30 a gallon in early 1980 (very high back then) they decided to slowly get rid of the 534s which averaged maybe 4 mpg in town and 5 on the interstate but by summer it dropped to about $1.05. The engines themselves were trouble free so they held onto some as late as 1984.

    Back when it was second nature knowing how to drive a truck with an awesome power-train such as the Detroit Diesel hooked to a Fuller Roadranger tranny......and of course the backbone of trucks in North America, the Ford Louisville line. Have the majority of any new truck driver today and tell them to sit in the drivers seat of this truck and say lets drive. Probably have no idea on how to operate it.

      exactly right, in the early 90s when english drivers were being fired in favour of eastern europeans many companies had their truck fleets wrecked by them not understanding shift patterns, double clutching

    I love the little wire catch that he uses to keep his splitter in high. You need to wear hearing protection when driving a 6-71 or a 4-53. Good engines though.

      First driving job was in 1981,drove GMC with 6-71 13 speed. Wearing hearing aids now.

      The wire isn't to keep the valve in high, it's to hold the spliter knob on the spliter arm that moves the valve in the housing to control going from.low to high and back.

    Your roads must be fairly level down there. I drove an Autocar dump with a 6/71 in it up here in NY and I had to shift it all day long! Never got to stay in high gear as long as you did.

    Drove a GMC 9500 tandem axle with a 6-71 (238) and this tranny for 4 years hauling steel... Loved it.

      Drove a 74 Hahn fire engine for years with that same configuration. My arm still hurts and I haven't driven that rig in 30 years!

    Up here in nh we have never ending hills and mountains so even with a 13 speed your right arm gets tired and you don't need to worry about breaking any speed records.

    Awesome video., I think it was a GMC with a 6-71 Detroit 10 speed with a shifter like that , that I drove . It was a kick in the ass to drive and run through the gears. 👍👍

      All Road Ranger splitters were mounted with hose clamps from the factory

      Stock as a clock... Even down to the rust spot on the roof , never seen headliners except custom stuff in the show trucks. No a/c, manual steering, and a clutch you had to stand on, hence why they were used mostly on logging roads and take-off.

      Yes, they were pretty much all mounted that way in the earlier years. Then Eaton came out with the black plastic shifter knob with the range selector switch built into it.

      charles toth eventually you can't hear them anymore because they're so loud. I always used to see old truckers with hearing aids in the left ear. I was used to wonder why, that's when old school trucker told me it was the 275 Detroit ear.

    Even has the Hendrickson hop. My '79 and '83 had it. My '92 was a lot truck that came with a 46,000 lb setup that didn't have the hop when you had a wagon, but bobtail anywhere and you needed a neck brace and visits to the chiropractor for weeks afterwards. After that one, it was all air ride.

    so this correct me if wrong is a ten speed. i had a Cummins with a 10eaton. my shift pattern even when full was always 2,4,6-10. is that just with my load usually at 50k (seed truck) or favorable to the engine? btw that sounds great. I miss that truck but I can't complain with its replacement of a pete with a c12 and 13 speed with split on high.

    This is probably the run-of-the-mill 6-71N with N65 injectors, right? Because, by the time the year this truck was made (1982), there was also a turbocharged 6-71T available up to 275 hp using the same N65 injectors.

      they most likely use smaller injectors for the 6-71n ,like a 55

    I dont get why a 10spd gets put behind a 6--71. The rpm drop between 5 and 6 is always big for a detroit. I ran a couple of 671's and their 13 speed was great. Ah well, great vidya anyway.

    Those engines made a lot of noise and everything was cool until the headlights hit hill...then is was start rowing in the gearbox because they WOULD NOT PULL.

    Great driver but I think he's using the clutch ,at least for some gears. I don't know why you would because that combination of engine and transmission is excellent for clutch less shifts. Why work so much harder than you have to?

      I'm just some guy who got bit by the 2 stroke bug from detroit but all screamin'demon s came stock with a blower
      Use to take ol detroit blowers off and put em on v8s to get mo power

    My Pop was a Cummins/Mack guy. He tolerated the 8v71 but the 6 was just too gutless.
    Said it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a sick chickens ass, on a downgrade

      Two stroke engines don't make torque like a 4 stroke engine. They rev up quickly on the flat, but try climbing a mountain 7% or greater grade and you'll wish you had Caterpillar 4 stroke instead.
