  • Surprisingly, I had never been to Manitoulin Island before, even though it's just 6-hours from my hometown.
With a trip planned to Sudbury, we decided to spend the day exploring Manitoulin and see what we could find on the largest freshwater island in the world.
It turns out even a full day of travel isn't enough. We would love to return in the future and spend another day or two exploring Manitoulin.
During our trip we drove through the La Cloche Mountains on the way from Sudbury and made our first stop at the famous Little Current Swing Bridge. This is the only road access to Manitoulin, otherwise you'll need to take the ferry from Tobermory, which is expensive and takes longer than driving from Southern Ontario.
Next, we explored the small town of Little Current. This is the biggest town on Manitoulin. From here we made our way along Highway 540 to M'Chigeeng and then onwards to Kagawong.
Kagawong is a beautiful small town on Manitoulin Island. In Kagawong there's the Bridal Veil Falls to check out and the lovely, historic downtown area. It's known as one of the prettiest villages in Ontario - a name it definitely deserves.
From Kagawong we made our way to Providence Bay where we planned to stop for a late lunch. In Providence Bay we enjoyed fish and chips from the famous Lake Huron Fish & Chips. Afterwards, we ate lunch and went for a swim at the Providence Bay Beach.
That concluded our trip to Manitoulin Island. Before heading home we stopped to quickly check out Lake Manitou, the largest lake on an island.
Manitoulin Island is a great place to visit and I definitely recommend it if you get the chance!
