  • The strength of Unfinished is that it’s in Priyanka Chopra’s voice. At one point, she writes: "I get to choose what I share and when I share it." Of course she does, but there are several places in which you wish the curation had been less sharp. Here's Anupama Chopra's take on the memoir.

    True, the book was well manicured but had it not been, this book would have become a controversy instead of what it truly is ... a memoir in gratitude to her parents. I strongly recommend this book especially hearing it on Audible since this is in Priyanka’s own voice and what a beautiful experience 😍

    I've just received Priyanka Chopra Jonas' "Unfinished" from Amazon yesterday and it is such a joy to read. This is just the book we all need right now! She shows such purpose in writing in a positive and uplifting way for women, particularly younger women and basically for anyone who has faced adversity in life based on their gender, ethnicity or just some how being different, that might turn up as a barrier unless one can turn things around and succeed no matter what. And she has amazing stories like the monkey 🐒 story in the school yard which I will not spoil. She patiently explains a lot of the differences between India and America. She has a special exuberance for life that it would be great if a lot more people had. Her film characters are often just as bold and straight forward as she is so she shines in a film like "Fashion" or even "Dil Dhadakne Do." I can understand Anupama wanting to see more about the acting but I think that all that can appear in the follow-up book to this one. And I think it is great that Anupama reviewed Priyanka's book. Can't recommend it enough. It makes you feel great like some of the best Hindi cinema films!

    • @larrybone4065
      @larrybone4065 3 года назад +1

      @@clevitationcr1982 There are stories about her Bollywood films in the Aseem Chhabra biography which includes the thoughts of directors she has worked with. In marketing her brand, sadly, most Americans are not much interested in her Bollywood career because those films are in Hindi and many are not comfortable watching them with subtitles even though many of them are as amazing and awesome as any sterling American film. Extremely successful South Asian professionals need to craft a new American identity once living in the States, which seems unfortunate. But she is will always be total masala and the totally Desi girl forever even in her new life. As long as she is happy which her memoir seems to confirm and her love for both her parents and for India is inspiring and it is relatively easy to see most of her Bollywood films.

    If she plans to release another Memoir 20 years later, she would have to start documenting things from now onwards, when things are recent and current. I think today it is incredibly difficult to pen down things that happened more than 20 years ago, as we do not have a photographic memory. Also, most of her content will be based on inputs from her family and friends. So that makes a difference.

    Wow. I must say, I approached this review with some skepticism-Anupama rarely does book reviews and this seemed like an attention grabbing tactic! Post watching it though, I stand corrected. She articulates whatever I felt about the book and more! It's so true that Priyanka is a powerhouse of an actress ( I wanted The Sky Is Pink some time back and man, she is amazing in it) but scarcely delves into how she managed to hone her craft. The family piece also seemed like gloss-if her own uncle called her "kaali" there's got to be some brown girl trauma hidden there right? Great job Anupama and Film Companion!

    I haven't read Unfinished although I have ordered it from Amazon and am waiting. I can see how Anapama would most like to see Priyanka talk about her acting method or approach. But most people in America do not know much about India and the huge emphasis on family unless they've watch a lot of Hindi films, a lot of the rom-coms and particularly pre early 1990s older ones. Western families are often so wildly dysfunctional compared to many Indian families. Perhaps the emphasis on family partially made her more confident and surely her parents were stellar and extraordinary, lavishing as much or more attention on her as they would a son. I don't think in the West, that people have much interest in Indian culture except for the exceptionally wealthy it must seem so different from most Americans' family experience. I feel badly about any prejudice she experienced in America and think it's important that people know are informed about it. She offers so much that is positive and her voice is so unique and individual yet her concern is for often very much for community and family as in "The Sky Is Pink" or in "Mary Kom". Totally agree that there will probably be more books, some concerning acting. But many Americans are always mightily impressed by all the care and love in many families seen in India and the diaspora of Indian people all over the world. I think this sounds like an awesome book, just the right sort of narrative that people who have seen her short appearances on late night shows would like to see. It must be difficult for a huge star to explain her life and India in 10 to 12 minute segments, so this book is the perfect venue. If famous actress Dame Judi Dench can write two books of autobiography, than Priyanka may very well write 3 or 4. But I like Anupama's review as she always spots the strengths of those she interviews. And Priyanka is a lady of amazing strength.

    It is disappointing but she felt she needed to write for an American audience to support her new projects. Anapama Chopra was really disappointed that there was not much in Priyanka Chopra's memoir about her Bollywood career. I think we need an American "special" to run on an American movie channel showcasing Priyanka's best Bollywood films. The purpose would be for Americans to see her Bollywood films that they would love if they'd just give them a chance. Her overall film portfolio is not near as much appreciated as it ought to be.

Watch pop music videos of the 90s and early 2000s, so many dusky beauties! Check out the song Sukhbir's Gal Ban Gayi and see the four models dancing. World's becoming a fucked up place now when it comes to defining beauty standards.

      While reading the biographies of Gandhi and Bose is important to glean from their experiences, there is nothing wrong with reading a heartfelt story about ANY life, no matter however ordinary or extraordinary. I am sure I will learn a lot from reading about your own story. Every story has a lot of life experience in it and everyone can pick up something or the other from everyone.
