Kennedy vs. Nixon - 1st 1960 Debate

  • Clip from the 1st 1960 presidential debate between Senator John F. Kennedy (D-MA) and Vice President Richard Nixon (R-CA). Held on September 26, 1960, it was the first presidential debate between candidates from opposing political parties as well as the first one to be televised. It is best known not by its subject matter, but by the preparedness and physical appearance of both candidates. Television audiences thought Kennedy won the debate by a landslide, while radio audiences thought Nixon won it by a landslide. Nixon appeared emaciated, unhealthy, and awkward, while Kennedy appeared handsome, tanned and confident. Nixon was recovering from an injured knee that resulted in a recent hospital stay. He had just arrived at the studio after a strenuous campaign in which he made appearances in all 50 states, including newly admitted Alaska and Hawaii. He refused to have makeup applied to his face, and had not shaved, making his stubble clearly visible to television viewers. Kennedy on the other hand, took time to rest before the debates and his suit contrasted well against the background. In effect, Nixon's gray suit seemed to blend in with the background, especially on the era's black and white television screens.

These debates are better then our debates yeah but honestly the debates today aren't that bad either because we citizens still get enough information on who to vote for and not to and that should be the main reason for debates. The debates aren't the same yes but they still get the job done.

Joshua Willis I disagree. The information we are provided before, during, and after the debates is, at best, wave-top and does not address the complexities of domestic and foreign policy challenges. As an example, calls by the current crop of Republican candidates (for the 2016 Presidential Election) to not accept the P5+1 agreement with Iran for restrictions on Iran's nuclear weapon program but offer nothing as an alternative (i.e., exactly what do they mean by strengthening sanctions against Iran?). This is especially important in the context that the other nations (Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany) participating in this agreement are about to drop sanctions against Iran and will not support unilateral US (or US and Israeli) military action against Iran. Their demands to not accept this agreement also completely ignore the fact that the agreement is a base for reintegrating Iran into the community of nations and will likely engender Iranian cooperation against ISIL and Iranian cooperation in our (the US) effort to stabilize Afghanistan and Iraq to an acceptable level that allows us to end our wars in those countries. Again, the supposed debates and supposed domestic and foreign policy stances that Republican and Democrat candidates espouse will not have the detail we need to determine how much these candidates undestand the complexities of these issues. As has been the case throughout 2015 as these men/woman announced their respective candidacy for President, everything between now and the general election will be more about mudslinging/criticizing and minimizing missteps than it will be about an honest discussion/debate of the issues and how each candidate would address them.

+wbneilsen debates in general are pointless. It is impossible to answer the question in detail given the amount of time. At best, debates show how composed someone is when under pressure and how clever they are in coming up with a response somewhat connected to the question.

However this year I would like to call the No Contest Era. Now there are three kinds of No contests. NC 1: The people you don't want to win, from either side loses and gets replaced by someone either new or a veteran looking for their chance in the spotlight. NC 2: Where one side wins by default and NC 3: Where whoever wins everyone else loses. The Hilary and Trump contest is NC 3 on the grounds that both have good and bad points, but no one on both sides hopes they win.

im confused. in school, i was taught that nixon lost this debate because Kennedy was "looking into the camera was if he was talking to the american people." but now thay i am actually seeing this, it seems that Nixon did just as good of a job at looking into the camera as kennedy.

It was said that Mr Nixon refused to wear makeup for the debate, whereas Mr Kennedy made full use of it.
I understand that Nixon was suffering with an injury and looked strained in the debate, Kennedy outperformed him on TV.
Also Kennedys charisma showed, despite the seriousness of the occasion whereas Nixon looked defensive.

You want to know the difference between politicians that actually cared and the ones (that we have today) who just put on a show, who make everything a bipartisan issue? At 1:43, the moderators give Nixon a chance to rebuttal, and he says "I have no comment". There is no way in hell you would ever hear a politician today utter those words. That was class.

Now Donny you need to take turns with Joey. We can set an egg timer and you can each have a turn to speak uninterrupted until the timer runs out. Here's an example, let's practice this a few times before you go on national TV. See how John and Richard are civil, answer the moderator's questions, and don't speak over each other?

Kennedy and Nixon both have the advantage of being eloquent and engaging speakers who projected intelligence. Calm, collected, confident. Very rare to have both major parties put up candidates like that.

I don't know what people are talking about Nixon looks healthy, energetic, and strong. A little awkward yes and his lips seemed to be glowing. But Kennedy looks like he's about to faint, he looks sweaty, pained, and worried. If there was an advantage for Kennedy over television I don't see it. But then maybe I'm just biased because I know Kennedy was gravely ill at this point.

Nixon hurt his knee badly just before this debate and is in some pain. You can see on certain angles in wide shots how he won't put any weight on it and is actually putting his weight through his hands onto the podium in order to bend his knee slightly..

Love Jack's elite ruling class Ivy Leaguesque Bostonian accent. Nixon was super smart, well qualified and motivated to do the job, but not as handsome, young, charming, polished and charismatic as Kennedy.
