Overall this is a great lineup! I know it's just a joke, but I hugely disagree with the person who said you can't have ADHD and depression. A lot of us (esp those who were diagnosed later in life) went through a significant amount of depression and anxiety along the way. It's super demoralizing and crushes your self esteem when you struggle with things that seem so easy to everyone else. You feel like a massive failure and it's hard not to internalize it. Also hard when you spend your whole life masking and realize you have no idea who you are.

I've read that the reason people with ADD/ADHD answer your bad news with an anecdote of their own is that they are conveying to you that they empathize and understand what you're going through. As someone with ADHD for over 50 years, I can confirm that - at least in some cases - that is true. I'm not trying to "one-up" you, I'm trying to communicate that you're not alone. So, the next time a friend whom you suspect is attention deficit and/or hyperactive does this to you, please understand it's your friend's way of hugging you and guiding you through what's happening.

I think there is a difference between trying to relate vs someone who legit is trying to tell you your pain isn’t as bad as this or that(which has happened to me multiple times with toxic people.) and some people totally understand me when I am trying to relate (key with it is to truly express emotion when they share their experiences ) and try to make a note for future in your head to be sensitive about it with them. But some people don’t want to hear anything about you they just need someone to listen.. and that can be very challenging.

Tell people you have a neurological condition that affects every aspect of your life and makes you feel ashamed and worthless and watch them get worried and then tell them it's adhd and see how fast they start laughing. Some of these were funny, I'm not saying you can't laugh about it; it's a difficult thing to live with and comedy is a great way to cope. But we aren't... We aren't clowns. We don't literally chase squirrels and butterflies and we certainly get depressed.

Everybody's experience is different with this condition. Just because I feel like a failure all the time doesn't mean that someone else with the same condition can have a completely different experience with it due to nature, nurture and circumstance. I cannot expect the world to always take me into consideration. When I feel a way and tell people how I feel about how ADHD affects my life, I don't say:'but then again; a lot of people with ADHD are perfectly happy'. Because I am talking about MY experience and people should not expect that I take their experiences into consideration over mine to make them feel heard. A mistake I used to make in my life, expecting people to do the same for me. 🤣. So now I think; I'll take care of my needs, first. That way I stay 'strong' and create enough space in my head to be able to cater to others needs without neglecting my own.

Some things that need to be corrected: The Hyperactivity (H) in ADHD stands not for a physically hyper-ness in a person, but rather a hyper-impulsive mind. Meaning I’m more likely to act on my impulses and have a lot of them.
Attention Deficit (AD) is another issue in the name. We do not suffer from a lack of attention, but rather a heightened attentiveness to everything around us. Our brain doesn’t end up observing the boring stuff like math or the boss’ vacation story. Sometimes our brain picks and chooses what it wants to hear leading to memory issues and learning disabilities.
Also, depression is more often than not comorbid(simultaneously present), because people with ADHD have a very low serotonin levels. We are more prone to being addicted to substances and foods and activities that spike our happiness chemical (certain drugs/chocolate/hyper fixation hobbies), and are more susceptible to nicotine and caffeine addiction because the stimulant has the same soothing effects as adderall and Ritalin.
(Also, unrelated but equally important, just because you’re organized doesn’t mean you have OCD. Obsessive-compulsive disorder refers to having an obsessive *thought* and a compulsive *action* associated with the though. (i.e. thought: “if you don’t check the stove now your house will burn down”, action: checks the stove. Thought: “hey I know you think you checked the stove but do it again or you’ll die”, action: checks stove again. Repeat.))

Rural/suburban Texas, and this was far from "the school's" advice. The teacher only felt comfortable being so candid because he and my dad knew each other. There is what people think, and what they are willing to say. It was actually a very good school overall.
And as far as comparing Texas to other places like California, I went to three different college/universities in Texas and never felt like I needed to be careful what I said in order to keep from getting in trouble or to appease the prof. I just had to be able to back up any assertions. Classes were full of open, respectful, and diverse debate, and people were able to hold open-air debates on very controversial issues. For instance, I minored in Religious Studies (ie. Religions in general, not Christianity) and I shared classes with Hindu, Shia Islam, Jewish, Catholic, Asatru Pagan, and literal card-carrying Marxist atheist students. We had great and always very respectful and open discussions. I finished in 2014. I don't know what those same schools are like these days, but I'd be willing to bet they're still better than most concerning the free and respectful exchange of ideas.
My comment was about individuals, not places.

The last guy at the very end described the biggest struggle with getting diagnosed with ADHD, especially for girls. It's called twice exceptional. You have a learning disability or disorder as well as a high IQ or extremely gifted.
Also, you can absolutely be depressed with ADHD. Going through life feeling like something is wrong with you because people just don't understand why you can't remember, be on time, hand in assignments, complete a task (without music or stimming), actually cross everything off your to do list, etc. When you go through life with the shame associated with all these executive functioning deficits, it quickly turns into depression and anxiety. You may think or say something funny, laugh a bit, make others laugh, but it doesmt change the soul crushing nature of untreated ADHD. I'm still in the diagnostic phase at 22, and originally went in for an ASD assessment, but my psych notice the ADHD and has been testing for that too. I'm so excited to finally be medicated, hopefully before the end of the year so I can do more than one assignment for my tafe course per every three months.

I actually love learning which made me go through school easily until University and Work life that got me diagnosed at age 27 :P
Learning disability is not a problem. The problem is whether the subject is interesting or not
Edit: The problem I encountered at university and work was the self organization and missing structure. You have to do a lot of things on your own and keep track of deadlines etc

    • @bethany3cat
      @bethany3cat 4 месяца назад

I was very similar, in fact. Diagnosed in 2nd grade (8 years old, I think), I was outraged that anyone could believe I had a learning disability! Then, I developed an I'll show them attitude, and all my competitive nature focused on succeeding in school. In addition, I was already an avid reader, so I began carrying a Science Fiction or Fantasy book at all times, and whenever a lull in class activity occurred, I would read my book -- completing as many as 2 or 3 classic works of literature a day. This continued all the way through High School graduation.
The only problem was that I never learned any coping skills and basically got through school "by the seat of my pants" fueled by a need to prove myself and carried along by a few extra IQ points I was lucky enough to receive.
Fast forward to Senior Year in H.S., as an emancipated minor (that was an entirely different set of misfortunes), I worked 40+ hours a week while attending school, but I was FOCUSed on being the first in my family with a college degree. I finished with honors near the top of my class and earned a National Merit Scholarship, and when I started university classes, I found myself completely cast adrift because I lacked any regimen or coping strategies, and I almost didn't make it out alive.
Ultimately, I managed to succeed almost entirely because of two well-timed and generous mentors, who contributed by offering me a sense of accountability to an extrinsic source. Yes, I did graduate; although, I regret even now, at 56 years of age, that I still struggle with creating any self-imposed structure around goals or time management.

Having ADHD and Pregnancy brain is the worst. It drives my husband insane. Its like having memory loss the moment you remember what you were doing. I could be holding a gallon of milk staring at a cheerios box with a bowl infront of me and my mind would be " why am I in the kitchen for?...... what the heck was I doing?... okay it involves milk....." qnd my husband yells out from across the room "YOURE ABOUT TO EAT CHERRIOS!" When someone says a dish is hot, I will purposefully pick it up and hold it while staring them in the face. I used to work in a restaurant and dealt with plates from the dish tank and such. if you use your fingertips and distribute the weight just right, you can pick up and move even incredibly hot objects, which most don't realize. I can get bowls out of the microwave with ease. I even did it with a baking sheet from an oven one time. You can imagine the looks of horror on their faces.
