My grandma had style for sure; she shopped at thrift stores when they were not popular; she would wear Levies cuffed at the bottom with women’s button down tops and sandals, and put Bobbie pins in her hair to curl it.
the death of subcultures is such an interesting topic! like now ppl use them for the aesthetics of them but not because they belong so they dont listen to the music, they don’t know the media, the icons, the history etc… so they just copy it’s not personal

Im a Older Girl here and i love to find stuff at the thrift shop that is weird and different , my style is all over the palce BUT i love to layer load of things ( clothing , jewellery , belts etc ) ... If i make stuff to sell i follow the trends with a touch of my of my style in each piece ... Smiles from NZ

I instantly think of a person as being stylish, when they are just like a comic book character. Meaning they just have a very distinct signature style that is not easy to be found anywhere else. I've known people like that in the past and most of them were men. The women I got to know in the past usually changed their look very often, changed their aesthetic all the time and even if they found something that matched them very well, it never felt like themselves. I partially made that exact same mistake when I tried to find my "perfect" everything. Just landing back on what I truly love despite it maybe not being perfectly shaped for my body type, height etc. I do love hats, beanies, sunglasses, chunky boots and oversized sweaters. I love layering a lot, I love moto style jackets and it doesn't matter if they are "perfect" for me or not, they are what I love and constantly grab from my wardrobe. And it's a shame that I forced myself to ignore that for a while. But honestly, by exploring different styles and aesthetics, I was able to pin point exactly what's truly important to me and what makes me feel like myself. The things that are true "me-pieces" are those that stuck with me over decades. Some of them I even already wore as a kid (e.g. chunky combat boots, I was the only girl at school who hated almost all types of shoes aside from chunky combat boots and my mom was kind enough to allow me to wear them). And I still wear bucket hats, fedoras and beanies. To me they combine function and style so easily and effortlessly. I also love flannel shackets because my dad always wears them and I used to pop over one of his whenever I went outside with our dog back in the day (on snowy, super cold days especially). I love many things because they bring up beautiful memories and make me feel at home. One could argue I don't dress feminine enough, but I really don't care about that. Funnily enough my brother and I like many similar things. And I do believe that showcases how peaceful and healthy our family life was when we needed it the most. That's something that has definitely shaped and influenced my clothing choices. Just like loving moto jackets. My dad used to ride a moto bike and take us with him on trips all the time. That's packet of fun memories. I wore combat boots a lot when we went hiking with the dogs and I loved it. That's ingrained within me and I am not going to force myself to leave all that behind just for the sake of whatever aesthetic might look more polished on me. I don't have to look the most classy, feminine and polished possible - that's also not who I am. I do have a tomboyish personality, a bit unconventional in certain areas, a bit rebellious in others, quite spunky and lively, silly sometimes - why contain that in a stiff or overly feminine style? That's really not my intention and I'm by now just embracing what I love and feel most at home in. And I do indeed like to combine vivid colors in various ways. Like a light teal and lavender (both on the brighter side) or teal and pink or a brighter minty green with pinks and purples. I like to wear oranges with blues and purples with greens, burgundy and peach, stuff like that. Such combos make me happy. And yet I tried to stick to neutrals for the sake of making things "easier" while all that did was making me feel dull and lazy. I like neutrals, don't get me wrong, but not as the main story of my outfit. The only "neutral" I REALLY love to wear is denim blues and I personally don't really consider them a neutral anyways. They are blues after all and to me feel more fresh and lively than a beige or a brown. I also still love my skinny jeans, because they won't get all wet in the mainly rainy wheather we have happening where I live. I'm definitely not a trendy person, but I have no intention to be one. I have no use for those cropped trench coats for example. I think they can look quite nice, but wouldn't serve me well. I am looking for a waterproof parker instead (rainy wheather, you know?) which I once owned but it was totally worn out beyond repair. Because that will not only work incredibly well with my overall style, it also is very functional and usually quite durable. That's the kind of coat/jacket, I usually wear for the most time of the year and don't have to second guess the cardigan or sweater I wear underneath (because the length won't work with the jacket). I always thought I had to be able to "name" my style to have actual style, but I don't think that's true. I don't have to put myself into a certain box. I actually believe that desire to put yourself in a specific box is what keeps us from truly finding our own authentic style and identity. Yes, I can describe my style, yes I can describe my personality, but give it a certain name? Not really. And if you might think my style looks mainly casual, I have to mention that most people tell my I am always a bit overdressed (even if I wear sweatpants and a basic longsleeve, not because of the individual garments themselves but because of the overall image that's created with what I wear) while I never feel overdressed, because everything's still comfortable and easy to take care of. And yes, hair plays a huge role here too. I prefer short hair for myself, I just can't deal with long hair, even though I find hair like yours incredibly beautiful, even the thought of having that on my own head, makes me feel uneasy. I prefer very textured hairstyles, very short at the neck area. That has to do with the fact that I love high and big collars, mock neck tank tops and choker style necklaces. But not only. I just love how short hair looks on me and feel instantly boring and uninspired when I wear my hair even only a bit longer (like a bob or a shoulder length hair style). Pixie style cuts are just my thing and have definitely influenced my overall style a lot. And while they do work with what I love to wear, they really didn't work with the silhouettes and styles that were recommended to me due to my body structure/frame and face type. And while I can easily grow my hair out (it grows pretty fast and isn't very prone to breakage or split ends even though it's chemically treated) rather quickly, I don't enjoy it at all. You can't imagine how scissor happy I get after trying to feel good with longer hair and finally allowing myself to go back short. It's like that instant "yah, THAT's me"-feel when I wear short hair. And I definitely don't wear the exact same haircut all the time. There are certain key elements that need to be incorporated to make me like it, but I often times change the shape, the length, the style or color of my hair - which definitely is more forgiving with short hair than it would be with long hair. But yah, short hair is a me-thing, for sure. What I noticed a lot during the past two decades is that people usually compliment my outfits the most when I didn't think too much about it. When I just allowed myself to pick whatever I did fancy in that moment. And honestly, I had banned leggings from my wardrobe despite loving them a lot. I just got myself a few pairs of leggings again and I'm so excited to wear them.

I lived in London in the 80s. Could be your grandma. That “subculture” was perfection. Music was EVERYTHING! I still feel that same feeling even now. It’s still my identity. But it’s harder to get away with wearing what makes me feel like me. Not hardly any women my age dress “stylish”. It’s a bummer. I do it anyway but certainly get some looks. 😂💪😎
