In 2019 someone sent me the link of the short film Kamali and wrote: you have to make a music video with her. The movie is about a seven year old girl, Kamali, the only female skater in Mahabalipuram in India who goes against the grain and takes ownership of her life with the support of her mother. I was so moved and inspired by her story and sent it right away to my brother Japhna and told him to watch it. A day later he called me up saying how he wrote this song with tears in his eyes. Kamali.
In so many ways I could relate to this little girl. Growing up, we look at the world with curiosity and envision infinite possibilities without any limitation. For a lot of us, these possibilities and dreams get blurry by the way the roles of men and women are dealt out. It is culturally rooted in ancient traditions where we are only good enough to become wives & mothers...where our life's purpose is to fulfil our duties of raising our children and taking care of the household. This still exists! I want to speak to all the Kamalis in the world to think bigger than that, to look further than that.
If we can birth life, imagine what we can create if we are fully off the leash?! With this song I want to be another crack in the cycle, so that one day we can fully break it together.

I love this girl, beyond her voice, it's the mentality for me. She's not chasing a hit. She's staying true to herself and telling her story in the most authentic way possible. She's blending sounds from 2 completely separate worlds. No one else is making music like Priya right now. It's so refreshing. Maybe it's not for everyone and I recognize that, but ultimately, music shouldn't be made for everyone. I'm rooting for her forever

thanks for this, even tho im part of the tamil diaspora i had never known about the kamali short documentary, and so when i found out about it through this song and music video i just had to go and watch the short. the film and this song are truly uplifting pieces of work that celebrate women and the strengths of our ammas.

Arrogance is the same thing as confidence, but society made us believe otherwise. Why respect the elders? What have they done to make life better for anyone, especially in South East Asia?
@@222maggs If I had to choose frome nudity and arrogance, i'll choose tradition. Well, even if you're right, in this video the tradition she represents doesn't cause harm,or don't seem to. Just because nudity is part of our nature doesn't mean it should be everywhere. Especially in music videos, why would you have that here? There are other places where you can explore that. It's about sending a message, and she sent that message in a peaceful way.
