Don't know if it will help but try turning the front sling post back out a half a turn. Sometimes the factories take them in too far & it does make a difference with pressure on a polymer stock. Learned the hard way. 👍

    Hi Who_tee_who,
This is supposed to be a very accurate long range caliber and should be shooting much better groups even with factory ammo.
I would start by checking if your barrel is touching the stock, secondly I would properly clean the barrel because I have seen carbon build up have a huge impact on group size.

The 6.8 Western concept is good and sound except until you shoot the 27 Nosler. As an old 270 WB fan, the 27 Nosler is what it takes to logically beat the old 270 win. The 6.8 western' s 5 types of ammo are all made by one company, Winchester with Browning badging. That was my first flag of caution, though I do wish it well and hope it succeeds. As it is now, it really doesn't bring much more usability than a 270 WSM. Try the Nosler and really see what the next best is about as it even beats my Roy.

I just bought a 6.8 Western based upon the ballistics. My first gun was a 25 06 back in 1970. So I’m not afraid of trying a lesser available cartridge. I wanted a 270 class rifle and this is the better option ballistically. I opted for the browning mountain pro. I’m optimistic it will be a good rifle. Love your shows, keep up the good work. CDH

Wow! You let it cool down. Im impressed. Now streach it out to 10 minute rests between shots & get that "cold bore" accuracy as best you can with factory ammo. Which ISNT the greatest to begin with. Any varience over 10 fps disqualifies it from being "premium". Hot chambers/bores also affect pressure/ velocities/ accuracy. The science behind it all is staggering. Ive been at it over 60 years & still learning.

I know you have concerns about terrorizing Heavy Metal's new dog, but you shoot better from that old wire spool at his range than you do at the new range... lol. It might be a matter of comfort in your seating/firing position that's throwing you off just a bit... just a thought...

The only thing I use Winchester ammo for is range shooting and practice. When I'm hunting I go straight to my gamekings. It's been my experience there are never any good groups when I shoot Winchester ammo. Even your groups prove match and Winchester don't go together.
My experience you gotta pay to play. If you want tight groups be ready to shell out some mulla.

If you want the best groups then you have to avoid factory ammo and hand load it taylored to your riffle. That means fire forming the brass to the chamber of the rifle, testing different bullets and lots of time and money.
When I shot PRS I ran bergers loaded on Lapua brass and CCI bench rest primers.
If you want factory loaded ammo matchkings and gamekings are your best. Most consistent loads I've seen came from black hills.

Consider glass bedding the rifle if it has not been done yet. I have gone through much frustration with a couple different rifles that could not shoot as accurate as I like. If I cannot cover three shots with a dime, it is not accurate yet. I have known others who's guns could not shoot accurately until the glass bedded it. Costs about $100. It worked for mine.

Paul, actually, thats the FIRST thing that should be done w any new bbl BEFORE the 1st bullet is put down it. ALL factory bbls have some crap left in them from the factory. Once fired that crap is driven into the bore. Bad JU JU from then on. Polishing the chamber & Freebore in the throat first also helps a LOT. I use the appropriate size copper phosphate brush with a patch covered in the J.B. and the 1st section of the cleaning rod w a drill to polish the chamber/ freebore. AFTER a through cleaning first. After polishing another thourough cleaning w Sweets. The polished freebore helps the bullet engage the riflings smoother for better accuracy. Also run a LIGHTLY oiled patch ( 1>2 drops) through on the last pass & LEAVE the oil in there. Acts like a "fouling shot". Also preserves the metal from corrosion ESPECIALLY in humid environments. Fanatic about cleaning the bbls after every shoot. Never had even a mediocer bbl go bad.

@@tristantimothy1004 good tip which I follow on certain barrels. I’ve never had to lap or polish a Tikka barrel and I have had and still have many that out shoot most custom built rifles. Now the economy rifles are another story, my Ruger American 6.5 CM had a very rough bore. Cleaned and test fired had a 2” group, I then JB the bore with a patch over a jag for about 20 patches. Decreased group size to .75” and gets better with every cleaning.

As to why the groups weren't as tight as many others you've compared could simply be down to the fact that the rifle just needs more pills sent down the tube. Who knows. Either way the XPR as you have shown previously is a great bang for buck (pardon the pun) rifle for sure. Thanks for sharing!

6.8 is just the name of the cartridge. It fires projectiles that measure .277", the same as your .270, they both fire .277" projectiles. Or in other words, they fire the exact same diameter bullet. The difference is that the faster twist of rifles chambered in 6.8 Western allow for the use of heavier bullets, and the greater case capacity of the 6.8 Western vs the .270 Win means that the 6.8 Western is going to have more energy.

Check your stock mounts, if barrel is touching the stock etc. A piece of wooden dowel a smidgen larger in diameter of the barrel wrapped with sand paper will open up the stock channel, (Full Floating). Sometimes a little JB weld to bed the lug makes a huge difference. Instead of a complete bed job. Of course a full bed is best. I ran into this with a CZ 22-250. A call to CZ yielded the technique of placing a small amount of JB weld around the mounting lug in the stock. I since have traded that rifle. It did make a difference in the accuracy.
Also check the crown. If you see a bad spot you can crown it with a little polishing compound and a brass screw in a drill. This or just return it to Winchester stating the accuracy problem.

I was thinking about barrel temperature too, only I’d be tempted to run 3 boxes through it might quick and get that barrel nice and hot and then let it cool down nice and slow. I think the point of aim will shift but maybe some of the stresses will come out of the barrel and it’ll not move as much as is heats up in subsequent shooting. Also like the shooter with the swivel being in to far I’d check that too just for drill.

    • @jbradley500
      @jbradley500 2 года назад +1

If I don't give 5 minutes between groups my bergara b14 hunter will start throwing them everywhere. Basically 5 minutes brings the outside of the barrel down close to ambient temp.

    • @tbthedozer
      @tbthedozer 2 года назад +1

@@jbradley500 with steel there’s a heat treatment process called normalizing where the steel is repeatedly heated and cooled until it finds a relaxed resting position. I am just curious about this in rifles and if firing 50ish maybe 150ish rounds in quick succession might relax the barrel a little bit making it group a little better after the cool down.
Normally the temperatures involved in normalization are far beyond what a typical firearm will ever see but there’s also the pressure component that normal steel doesn’t experience, so maybe the rifle will shoot better if it’s “broke in” sort of thinking? I don’t know but it might be an interesting experiment to see if anything improves.

@@ChristopherKnN , You have a good point. Ive found adding support to the front helps a LOT. I add a row of steel balls in the channels & use liguid steel to set em in place. Does add weight but RADICALLY improves them. Have also used fiberglass arrow shafts cut to length in the channels & liquid steeled them in. Not as heavy but definately stiffens up a floppy forearm. Adding s handful of BBs to the hollow rear w epoxy to lock em in also helps. I use liquid steel mostly. That stuff NEVER cracks/breaks.

It honestly seems like there’s something wrong with either the gun itself, like the stock or barrel, or the ammo itself. Very seldom have I seen a rifle that wouldn’t shoot a group better than that with 5 different loads. There either has to be something off with the rifle, or it just really doesn’t like those loads. I’d be interested to see how some handloads do in that rifle. I’ve seen you shoot tons of really great groups, so I really don’t think it was you. See if you can do some ladder tests and develop a load for that rifle!

I have a xpr in 338 win mag only factory ammo i shot is hornady 225sst superformance it shot 5/8" to 3/4" all day everday i have gone thru alot of componants to find a load that works good.i used a lead sled to start and i started having problems with accuracy i bedded the action. That didnt help much. I had several loaded up fer testing i shot off of sand bags the groups looked better hovering around 1 1/4" i took my torq wrench and started at 25"pounds went up in 5 lb increments groups opened up then bam rite around 3/4" groups i beleive they call it torque tunning a rifle. It mite help if you got enough ammo 3 shot group then torque 5 more inch pounds till it tightins up. It wont hurt to try it but let barrel kool off between shooting groups and on all copper bullets you need to clean as much copper out of barrel as u can before shooting any mono bullet. Good video hope i helped thank u bro.

Honestly- check your scope mount. That gun should be more accurate for ya. My AR 15 had a similar experience, and I rechecked my torque specs on my scope mount on my pic rail and my 3MOA groups shrunk to 1.2.
You might not be seated properly on your pic rail, or maybe your rings need to be lapped?
    Good luck!!!

I had and have a few Hawke scopes. The SF I have had some issues. I had two of those scopes do just what is happening with your groups. 240 weatherby mag. Went to the Hawke pro and my groups tightened up. This was with a weatherby accurized rifle. Drove me up the wall until I changed scopes again.

Somethings not right because you should be getting way better groups at 100 yards and it’s probably something really simple. Trying to think what it could be. Lot of the guys posted some good ideas of what could be happening here but none the less I’m scratching my head. Thanks for the video.

Some guns don’t group well with hot barrels. All those shots will get the job done on game out to 200 even though I know you have rifles that group much better. I’d probably send that one packing but that’s just me.

Your XPR was made in portugal, at a plant called Viana; not sure how their barrels are

I would make sure the barrel is free floated. Then bed the recoil lug/ action. Maybe toss in a better trigger

I have been watching your videos and something isn’t right. I know you can shoot really well. I would double check your scope mounts and bases. I also don’t know if you are letting your barrel cool down all the way in between each group but if not that barrel will be smoking hot. Hot barrels really affect groups. Just my two cents. Keep the videos coming! Cheers from Montana

I like my xpr mobuc in 30-06. I realize sub 1 inch groups at 100meters with norma or geco ammo but not with the winchester ammo. 6.8 western is not availebale in Belgium.

They were still all kill shot's. If you could only use one rifle and round to hunt deer or a ram with, what would it be? I love my Ruger American, but I'm always afraid the deer will hear that screeching sound. I really want to see you take one with fk brno 7.5, I like handgun hunting best along with my Henry. I only got into bolt action rifle's since I've been watching you. Thanks a lot now I have to buy more gun's, wait that's a good thing. God Bless you and your family and your best friend Paul. Sincerely Ruger Rich
