What i love about this, is that it's a failed project. Sounds weird, but hear me out. Far too often fan additions to Star Wars Lore are always these super powerful and significant and flawless things, that can do what they were designed for exceptionally well. But that really shouldn't be the case all the time. Real military development projects quite often result in the project being abandoned after some prototypes were built and the concept is deamed not worth it. Such projects are still super interesting though, and having stuff like that in Star Wars adds a lot of depth to it in my opinion.
EDIT: Thanks for all the love folks! I'm very happy this comment was reseived so well. This is an awesome community, ya'll are great. :)

I agree. Failed and semi-successful projects are actually far more common than a lot of people seem to understand. This seems exactly like the kind of project that would get approved earlier in the time of the Empire (say around 12-15 BBY) when TIE Fighters were relatively new, and go into production for a short period of time before the Imperial Navy decided not to continue the project. I could definitely see the Navy developing this kind of project as an alternative to the Gozanti-class freighter conversion; a competition that the Gozanti TIE carrier would eventually win.

Adding on to this, this could be what leads not only to WHY the Advanced and Defender even have hyperdrives, but also why their other significant features were added.
Stage 1: Mission profiles needing a hyperdrive-capable fighter crop up, so the Empire commissions this project.
Stage 2: They quickly realize that a standard TIE is missing more than just a hyperdrive to operate in solo or small-squadron missions.
Stage 3: Rather than upgrading all of the TIEs in service and using these pods, the Empire just went that slight step further and just installed them in the fighter, itself. Your fighter is more valuable, now, and you kinda want to make sure you can get it back.
At least as common as failed projects are iterative ones, where the initial project reveals an unanticipated flaw, spawning Project II that handles the new need and the original one.

They are fairly uncommon but a few helicopters have them. I know the Russian KA-50 Black Shark has it, and possibly the newer spec ops stealth variant of the AH-64 Apache. An interesting concept. However, I'd argue that this undermines the Tie-fighters core strength of being a swarm ship. Sending in light cruisers or a docking ship that can carry a group of ties seems more practical. The Tie fighter simply isn't designed for lone long-range missions. Hence why Tie-Defends and other more capable long-distance ships are more desirable in those missions. I would, however, say this would benefit ships like Tie-Bombers and Tie-interceptors in discrete missions.

Unless it was intended for a stealth mission, it would be more cost efficient to launch from the bay of a larger, hyperdrive-capable vessel as they did. This also addresses the notion of keeping a leash on the pilots. Stealth TIE fighters themselves do come equipped with hyperdrives anyway.

I'm trying to figure out a mission where a one way trip would be useful, the empire would need to at least pretend that it cares about retrieving pilots so they'd still need to send a carrier vessel to retrieve the pilots, and if you've already got a carrier vessel in the mission it would make more sense to deploy fighters from that carrier. I like the idea of there being limitations to the ring though, very empirey. Maybe the navicomputer in the hyperdrive ring could only store the trip out and then the trip back? Maybe it has very limited fuel so you can only make two jumps without tanking up?

Rebels then pull a heist to hijack the ties just as they come out of hyperspace, in order to get the "way back" coordinates stored in the rings. Then they use that intel to either guide their main force to either attack the fleet, or use the infomation to avoid it entirely. Deadass could be an episode of Rebels.

I feel like a project to do this would almost immediately snowball into a whole new custom fighter because imperial engineering projects have no self control and were already angling to replace TIEs from a dozen other angles.

I mean if we're getting nit-picky, why do they need solar panels? They already have compact energy sources for other fighters and they're not always near a star when they're fighting. Even 100 percent efficiency wouldn't generate enough power in earth orbit to power all it's components. So the panels give it a larger profile to hit and block the pilots vision. It would have just made more sense to have the TIE fighters be little spheres zipping around. But then that wouldn't look as cool

How would the TIE Fighter computer system calculate hyperspace jumps though? As I would assume they are not capable of doing so, meaning the computer would be on the hyperspace ring. Other drawbacks for the Imperials would be that if the calculations are done by TIE pilots, these pilots now need increased training to learn how to calculate hyperspace jumps. Alternatively it could be that the calculations are uploaded directly to the TIE hyperspace ring, by a local navigational officer or droid.

So the thing that has always bugged me about the fact that the Imperial fighters 'lacked' hyperdrive is that it feels like lugging around that extra equipment should hurt the Rebel ships in someway.
From what little I know about real-world fighter design, interior volume is at a premium, and any extra mass on board hurts you in several different ways, either worsening range, reducing speed and agility, and taking up slots that could otherwise go to more or better weapons, reinforced structure or armor, or extra fuel capacity.
Every time I see "X-Wing is better because HYPERDRIVE" I can't help but think "Okay, but should the TIE fighters not have been able to use some fraction of that mass and volume for, I don't know, awesome shields, or incredibly powerful cannon, or something?"
And even if they didn't, the extra acceleration and agility should have been a huge edge in combat, especially the dogfights that seem to be most of Star Wars Fighter-on-Fighter actions.
It just feels like that is never, ever addressed, and it ought to be.

    • @jtjames79
      @jtjames79 3 года назад +3

Damage output, survivability, cost, pick two.
X-Wings are better because they are more expensive, and the Rebellion couldn't afford a war of attrition.
In the same way that TIEs are better because they're less expensive, and the empire couldn't afford not to wage a war of attrition.
The right place, at the right time, in the right hands, good old stick can defeat an empire just as effectively as a Death Star.
When creating narratives it's really good to intentionally set up situational advantages and disadvantages, that's where conflict is interesting. Particularly when you subvert expectations by introducing a complication that ends up being counterintuitively advantageous.
Like a scene where a heroe's carrier ship is destroyed, in a fight he is losing to a gaggle of TIE fighters, depriving his X-Wing of what little cover fire was keeping him alive.
When suddenly the expectation of imminent doom is subverted when the carrier ship intentionally self destructs taking out all of the unshielded TIEs, while letting the hero live to fight another day.
That would be a cool scene for a book, movie, RPG table and otherwise, etc.
In a WEG D6 tabletop game, we were using the Star Wars Technical Commentaries on theforce.net, and a player got a great idea to use spray foam fire retardant to overload TIE fighters to use as an improvised explosive device. Those aren't solar panels those are radiators, you mess with those and you have a bad day. Like an insulating foam combined while running their engines in maintenance mode. Enough thrust to test the systems not enough to rip it out of the cradle, builds up heat quick when the radiators aren't working correctly, the maintenance mode overrides the security protocols.
Using fire fighting foam to cause an explosion, priceless.

in regards to your first point, aren't TIE fighters much smaller than X-wings? pretty much the only part of the ship that has significant volume is the tiny cockpit. my point is that TIEs would be expected to have significantly less capabilities than a more voluminous X-wing.
in regards to your second point, there's a couple of possible explanations. it's possible that b/c TIE fighters are so light, their engines are much weaker to reduce production costs while maintaining acceptable acceleration and maneuverability (which happens to be at most on par with X-wings). if that was true, then more advanced and expensive TIE fighters might be expected to have better engines and be more maneuverable. alternatively, space flight doesn't really work in ways we would expect in the Star Wars universe, so smaller ships aren't necessarily more maneuverable.

Yeah this. The X-Wing *is* bigger, which is where all the hyperdrives and shields go, and the TIE does have powerful cannons for its size, but... the fact the Rebellion is operating with top-of-the-line do it all fighters is somewhat odd. Also that they're... such a thing? Like, shields, sure, but I feel most fighters shouldn't be equipped with hyperdrives. An Expensive carrier launched fighter should also perform better than an Expensive hyperspace fighter, limiting hyperspace fighters to very specific roles. Which, admittedly, are the kind of roles the rebels use them.

So amazing idea but they already have a solution to this problem with TIE’s. The gazonti cruiser could carry 4 TIE’s and carry them through hyperspace using its own hyperdrive but it’s a slower process because the TIE’s have to detach and a gazonti is waaaaayyyy more conspicuous to an insurgency you may be trying to spy on or ambush. My explanation is the empire was too lazy to fix this because “we have the gazonti cruiser that’s good enough” but still the empire should’ve done at least some field testing or something with such a convenient technology for such a serious shortcoming. Awesome vid and great intro btw

These would be cool to have in combination with older Republic style carrier ships like the Venator, which were said to be relegated to patrol duties on the far edges of Imperial space. A Venator II with a large compliment of TIEs outfitted with hyperspace rings could much easier maintain control over multiple systems at once, as multiple wings of TIEs can be dispatched in different directions at the same time without the Venator having to break it’s advantageous middle ground location in deep space, except to go and pick the fighters up after they were done. Or, simply spend some more credits to have a “round-trip” hyperspace ring variant. Fighters dispatch to nearby trouble, deal with situation, then jump back to home and get refitted with new rings.

I love the idea and the design, but for a TIE hyperdrive ring would require an almost full redesign of the TIE suite of star ships. Notably, adding life support systems, increasing the cockpit size, larger astronomical computers (sucks not having an astromech lol) and a full redesign of the solar array wings.
Not to mention the already discussed change in naval doctrine, the TIE platforms don’t lend themselves to all that great of atmospheric flight let alone surviving the difficulties of long hyperspace travel.
Still, with all that said, it’s an awesome design!

They should include this into a movie, both to demonstrate it's practical use compared with other alternatives, and during dialogue scenes that debate its effectiveness and conflict with imperial doctrine.
I can also see this being used on a trial basis, but since some ambitious officer didn't like the idea (like Tarkin), it ends up being shelved, not so much because it's not a good idea, but because of politics.

There's a browser game called Astro Empires, where if you take ships without hyperdrive to a planet or system too far away, to fight someone, or, simply by mistake because you forgot they didn't have hyperdrive, since your planet has a Jump Gate you can build to send them out, you can't get them, back. I always said they needed to add this feature in for things to build. Or a tug ship system to tow them back. Make it Warp 1 only, so it took a while to get to them, and then to bring them back, but, at least you could get them back without having to scrap them.

That Hyperdrive ring for standard TIE was dope. However at time 1:09 he answers his own question. 1. Imperial Doctrine mandates no hyperdrive on standard TIE. 2. The Empire has 2 TIE variants for missions such as long range infiltration or and discreet operations. If you think about it the Empire would have its bases, outposts, and fleets strategically placed throughout the core worlds and Outter Rim and patrolling various sectors. Each Grand Moff was responsible for their sector and conducting the political and military objectives of the Empire. A disruptive element such as smugglers or Rebels were either arrested, suppressed, or run out of the sector. Being that Grand Moffs don’t interfere in matters outside of their sector, there is no advantage for a Grand Moff to move their assigned resources out of their assigned sector unless the order came from the Emperor. If you think about it the Rebel Alliance was only one issue. They had many worlds to govern, distribute resources too, provide security and some semblance of support to the indigenous citizens of the Empire. Not everyone in the Empire were slaves or Imperial Forces. There were merchants, government contractors, regular tradesmen etc… the Empire provided and regulated commerce for. That got completely off topic as to why Std TIE are not equipped w/ hyperdrive. 😂

I feel like they'd probably be used more for infiltration missions and special operations where it was already fairly obvious that the mission would be a one-way trip anyway. On a short range ship with limited life support and lack of a either a Hyperspace navigation system or an Astromech Droid jumping blindly would prove disastrous. Hyperspace capable TIEs would exist only as a personal ship ie. Vader’s or for use by elite squadrons . Designing a First Order TIE based on the original TIE Advanced X1 was a missed opportunity, but then again that entire trilogy was .
