  • Cinematography basics: three point lighting.
Here's a quick breakdown of the lighting setup. We'd teach you about contrast ratios and it's relevance with the full light...but we don't have a light meter or a camera monitor that operates in stops. So just know that the fill is what will help you push the shot to high or low contrast.
And the key doesn't HAVE to be the one that is front and to the side. You could have the key be overhead with a fill to lighten and backlight for separation.
    Lights used:
Key: Amaran 200S with a big Octa
Fill: Amaran 60D with reflector through some diffusion (too lazy to get another softbox out)
    Backlight: Nanlite Pavotube 6C

That's awesome to hear! If you have 3 lights, I would suggest actually not using the fill light and just use a reflector for fill if you find the shadows to harsh. Put the light in the background instead or light up the background. This video was about showing the 3 point lighting which means we can't put a light in the background cause then it's technically 4 point lighting lol. Having a light in the background gives motivation for why you're being backlit in the first place OR it just makes the background more interesting (we usually put a light in the planter).

Glad to hear it. Well if you aren't showing your face, this lighting setup still applies to lots of products in the event that might be what you are shooting! Probably more relevant to products than it is to people honestly cause not lighting the background in this looks weird.

What would be the wattage and make of these lighting?

Main light is an Amaran 200x S, fill is an Amaran COB60, backlight was a nanlite pavotube 6c. The fill with a reflector through diffusion got to maybe 11% before it started equaling in power the main/key light. I'm not sure what the wattage of the backlight was but it's not that strong and it doesn't have a reflector on it so a lot of the light spills all over - we had that one at 100%.
