I’d turn the 2x4 roosts sideways (the 3” side up), as keeping them with the 2” side up requires the chickens to grab onto it, sometimes causing issues with their claws. I have ten chickens and 2 nest boxes. All ten chickens use one box. They wait in line with a vacant one right next door.
Put a cord or chain on the egg collecting door so when collecting the door becomes a shelf to set your collecting basket on. 👍 Lumnah Acres did that on their New Yolk City. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓👍👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Looks great 👍
Great job. Other than the cement floor and walls, my barn looks the same inside. You have no idea how much help, encouragement and perfect timing your video is to me-- I'm raising (now) 21 chicks--tonight they're in dog crates in garage!! I thought todays project would be roosts for existing pen; i bought wood and brackets for perches, went in the barn to discover raccoons feasted on 4 of my chicks! Watching your work makes me feel I can do the same thing in my barn to replace existing pen, so the rest of chicks will be safe. I can't say thank you enough!! Also, love the tri-color goats! I've just got 2 full size Alpines (rescues) left, but am planning for more! (It's an addiction!
I used needle nose pliers to hold my small staples until I came across a nice battery powered stapler. Mine was made by Milwaukee. It’s a 12V size and was pretty cheap at $76 on Amazon. I’m sure other brands make them as well. I decided to stay with one manufacturer so my tools all used one brand and it was Milwaukee but other brands make these as well. The 12V size is lighter and is plenty powerful enough for a stapler. It’s a real labor saver. Good luck. I really enjoy your farm videos.
My roosting poles are small tree 2-3in diameter spaced 1ft apart. On a 45 angle floor to just below ceiling. The top tier is full every night at head count.. the feel safe the further off the ground they can get…. Safe happy hens lay more eggs…. We have about 60 hen’s, kids sell the eggs.
If there are ghosts in the barn, then ya'll need to include pics! Your coop is looking good! I love the nest box.. You have plenty of nests. You will find that your hens will all lay in one or two of the boxes.. You might want to round iff the edges of all of the roost cross pieces, so the hens can grasp them comfortably without the edges digging into their feet. it's so nice to have the tools you need for pretty much whatever you want to make.. Like having a well-stocked kitchen... everything is there..
I know I am a little late suggesting this but what I have done in the past and what works very well is if you hinge a simple roost to the wall for Instants my roost is 6 foot wide and 6 foot long made out of one by fours I hinged it to the wall then I hung a 2 foot piece of chain or Jack chain from the ceiling and when I need to clean my coop I just raise up the roost hang it from the chain and that makes everything clean up very nicely and simple. Thanks for all of your great RUclips content
Looks great, the purch on the laying boxes might turn into roosts. If it does put a round pole up there, they can still fly up to get in but they don't like to roost on small round ones.
Thank you so much for this video! We are planning on building a barn on our new property and want to include all the animals in one cohesive space. We learned a lot from watching!
You did e very thorough job of predator proofing it and it will pay off with peace of mind and happy hens over the years. The only thing you need to change is that chickens need the 4inch side up on the roosts. Five nest boxes should be plenty because they will no doubt all have the same favourite nest box and insist on using one out of the five boxes. Mine would even squeeze in and lay together rather than use the empty nest box next door.
I think you are going to be surprised by how many chickens will roots up in the rafter in the sill board. They like the highest place to roost. But I said it before looks great. Thanks for sharing. Hi from Jim in northern Canada.
Looks good. Hardware cloth is such a pain in the neck but necessary IMO. Nice nest boxes. Most would recommend to situate your roost higher than your nest box, otherwise they will roost in the nest box, poop in it and then lay in it. Are you going to have a chicken run outside or just in the barn?
Looking very nice. You do need the roost higher then the nest box cause the chickens will roost in the nest boxs. The top hens need to roost on the highest perch.
You might want to consider putting some of that hardware cloth in front of the window. Keep the chickens from jumping up and hitting it when they are trying to sit up on the ledge..older glass can be fairly brittle.
Its looks great!!! I would add an outside covered pen for the chickens too. I dont free range my girls as they tear up flower beds and gardens and the dogs dont like them loose. Everyone is suppose to be in their own space according to the dogs! LOL
I love the chicken coop in your barn. I live in Australia & we don’t have big barns like yours - wish I had one! I find that my chickens prefer a wider roost, so I use 3x2s, with the 3 inch side flat for them to roost on. Chickens actually cover their feet with their feathers to keep them warm. I’d watch out for hens jumping out one end of the nest box, when you are collecting eggs from the other end.
i failed to type in 5 feet in height. i attached a hinge on the back of roost with a rope on the front to pull up and lock when cleaning. love watching your videos. :)
You may find the chickens will roost on that bar in front of nest boxes, chickens like nesting on the highest point. Hard to guage if it's higher than the bigger roost structure.
You are correct. Some if the chickens are roosting in front of the nest box. But all the roosts are getting used. They seem to spread themselves out in small groups.
@@CountryViewAcres I'd also recommend you use the deep bedding method in that coop, it will provide more compost for the garden next year. May as well put the chickens to work!
greetings: fantastic construction, very nice looking. as i see it the board in front of the nests will eventually end up being a roost and will be too hard for them to get over to the nests (too far to step over and too short to fly to). try another board in between or a wide floor board. i must say you and i have similar mates, both pretty and very helpful......g
nice work! we're turning one of our barn stalls into a coop this year. It's 14' x 15' and we're going to use plywood and insulate. The rest of the barn is still being updated so we wanted a nice secure spot for them. We'll have a chicken hatch out to the pasture behind the barn and at least two windows for light and ventilation. It's probably overkill, but I'm hoping it works, we have so many different predators to consider :(
The coop looks great, but you probably would have done just as well to have gone out in the woods and cut two small limbs the width of your coop and hung them across the top as your roosts (at two different levels). They wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing as the roosts you built on the floor, but if you put them in, I would be willing to bet that the chickens would choose them over the ones that are lower down. Or, you can find a way to raise the ones you built up off of the floor so that they are closer to the ceiling. Also, your door will allow you to throw in food scraps without entering, but you will still have to enter to provide water for the chickens. I also don't think you want to get your chicken feed mixed in with chicken poop, so I don't know how much of a time saver that door will be for you. Just some thoughts. Hope they are something to think about. If not, only good intentions were meant.
Is there any reason why you couldnt have a plastic tray in the laying boxes that would act as an easy way to clean the insides of the boxes.. Also, what about sealing the concrete floor and walls for easier cleaning...
The concrete is pretty rough. Very old floor. It would probably need to be covered with some self leveling cement to have a smooth surface that would clean well. As for the nesting box, we haven't had much issue with just using hay or straw. It seems to catch everything and is easy to clean out.
You do nice work. Now you can have 70 chickens. Are you a maintenance man for a factory, because of all your skills? They will probably only use 1 or 2 of the nest boxes.
I would latch the top part of door into the bottom door that way they behave like normal door and stay together while always requiring only one latch to be open, it might be worse if you only want bottom part open But dont think that will be often
Where are you going to put the mini donky's ? 🌜🐦🐎🐐🐑🐄🐁🐃🐒🐇🐔🐖🐨🐫🐯🐐🐓🐈🐂🐍🐢🐴 😂😂😂 Nice job on all the things you've made 'and' your repairs 👍 your kinda handy ✋ to have around 😉 Almost makes up for spraying toxic waist all over your pasture 😏☠
Five nest boxes are plenty! I have about as many chickens and they ALL want to use the SAME box😒 ...why have a box to themselves when two or three chickens can pile into one?😏
I’m a new subscriber and really like your channel but I have to disagree with you, there is no such saying as “it’s just a spider “! lol I would have used a flamethrower.
Hi...... Country View Acres, thank you for sharing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍

That chicken coop is being built like FT.Knox, ain’t nothing going to get in there.Lol Great job as usual you two.

Coop looks great. Any chicken would be happy to call that home
Hoping to see the chickens inside the new coop!!!
My husband has built 4 chicken coops and a tractor over the years, and every time he says “that was a way bigger job than I thought it would be”. 🤣
You are a great couple. She is a good team mate for you. I loved it when she was after the spider.
That is an excellent coop for Winter and keep the chickens safe.
great workmanship looks awesome
I appreciate the effort you put toward making the coop safe. Also like the precision, makes a nice looking build.
Very nice job!

Time for a break! You are knocking out that list.
I think you are a strong believer in doing things right the first time! If I were a chicken, I'd want to live in your very nice chicken condo!
bonjour , nice as always well done . merci
You two do a very good job keep it up.

Most clever nest box access setup ever!
The lower barn is coming together, it's looking great, you take your time and do nice work, cant wait times see the chicken's in there new home .
Excellent job looking really nice. You are going to have some happy chickens.
Awesome Job!
This is awesome. I have a barn and want to place a resting box in an old horse stall. Thanks for this
The barn is really coming together. Looking forward to other projects!

OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job. I can tell you have building and farm experience. The wife and I enjoy your channel. The outtakes are an added bonus.
Great job. will pray for your life.
Very nice should have some happy chickens and makes the barn look good also 👍🐣🐔😎🇺🇸🇺🇸
That is very good. Looks absolutely terrific. Makes me wish I had a barn.

Very nice coop, and nicely done! One thought though... nesting boxes should be mounted away from incoming light, just my two cent.
Great great coop. Love it a lot. So will the chickens. Pests beware!!! Neat clean and I like the small meshed walls.🤙👍🏼👏💪🏼
I think you are going to be surprised by how many chickens will roots up in the rafter in the sill board. They like the highest place to roost. But I said it before looks great. Thanks for sharing. Hi from Jim in northern Canada.
Great build! Love it.
You guys are a hoot!!!!! You also play nice and work well together...looking forward to more fun videos 😉😀

We will let them run in the barn and barnyard. And any pasture area that is open to the barnyard.
Super nice!!! Y'all do great work!!! Can't wait to see the chickens reaction to their new home! TY
great job, looks better than other coops I've seen built, keep up the good work.
Looking very nice. You do need the roost higher then the nest box cause the chickens will roost in the nest boxs. The top hens need to roost on the highest perch.
great job on the chicken coop. It looks great. Keep up the great work:) Thanks for sharing :)
Great video man. You aught to add a rain water catchment system to water the chickens as well. That would be cool to see what you come up with.
Another great video. Enjoying your journey and efforts. Thank you

When we going see the feeder stears?

Does the fact the coop is indoors affect the laying, I always thought the chickens need a lot of sun to lay regularly. Thanks.
i have my roost feet high at the top and they stair down to too the floor. i design it too lift up for cleaning and then let back down. its soooo easy
Yeah, my roost could have been higher
i failed to type in 5 feet in height. i attached a hinge on the back of roost with a rope on the front to pull up and lock when cleaning. love watching your videos. :)
Use bigger bolts for the doors make your life as easy as possible 😀👍🏼
Love the chicken coop. It makes me want to improve my hen house. 👍
What are you using for bedding ?
Good plan.
VERY NICE CHICKEN PEN, THINK THEY WILL BE PLEASED.

Thumbs up
air stapler saves alot of time
One more thing, check into how those horizontal 2x4s should be. I heard they have to be laid flat to allow for the little feet. I'm not sure.
That's true, plus they have room to rest on their feet and keep them from freezing in the winter.
you may have to instill a fan for hot hot days to with more animal comes more heat

Yes definitely agree with that. I ended up doing the same thing as well..
Looks great. Are y’all planning to add some light? Just wondering and be sure to have space to store food to access etc
Check another one off the list! cheers! New houses for everyone. This one comes with an exterminator, Bye bye to that huge spider.
Now you need to get that electric run in the barn!
Wha t is the upper level of the barn used for.??

At some time in the year you will need to limit the amount of light into the coop.
Yeah, we will get electric to the barn this summer.

I was wondering if over time you might catch your clothes on the hardware cloth ever thought about putting a 1x2 over the egde?
That is a good idea if that becomes an issue.
The 2x4s need to be turned 90 degrees. Chickens do not perch like a sparrow.
Are you still going to build some rabbit pens in there as well?
Actually we have decided to stop raising rabbits. We don't really enjoy raising them. We have a couple litters to raise then we will be done.
Love the design. Is it yours or copied.if do where ftom.id like to do this in our barn
Today's episode is sponsored by the number 4. Well done.
The chicken roost is not tall enough.that is why some want to roost on the gate.
good job I would raise the door off the floor that wood will swell is it gets wet
don't kill the spider that hunts flies.. It is a very useful creature ..
Good music
Spiders are good. Don't kill them. They eat other bugs
Your roots aren't high enough.
Women and spiders LOL 😂😂😂😂
Don’t kill spiders!!!!!!! They eat all kinds of insects 🤗🤪
