BTW, Just want to say. I've watch your videos the past one year and half and there's like a roller coaster of rejections. Finally had an offer to work as Accounting Officer and the other offer was an Auditor. I decided to pursue auditing career this time. Thank you for the videos, it helped me a lot in the process applying for state jobs. They said you've gotta have a person you know inside, I don't have connections at all or know anyone but I just watch your youtube videos that help me a lot in my applications Thank you Sir & God bless!
I’ve found my state coach-Ken is the real deal! I’m a tough sell, but his ethics come across clearly in his videos, made it EZ for me to buy the one hour ($80) coaching. Ken has been in communication since I purchased the one hour. I asked if we could do two 30 minute suggestions: Ken was fine with that. My issue has to do with disability accommodations. He came through with in-depth info AND NETWORKING - even suggesting sending my contact info to someone that is now a state employee in my field! It doesn't get better than that! ....also....I’m an uncertified paralegal, and something else that impressed me was Ken’s legalistic style of speaking in his videos: summarizing clearly what the video will be about, repeating main speaking points, and doing a quick summary/conclusion at the end. I’m sure if he was a retired DA, he would also input authorities to support his points!
Hi Ken, Been a subscriber for a while now. I interviewed with CalPERS for an SSA/AGPA level position on 5/12. On 5/26, I received an email stating I was receiving a conditional job offer!! As of today, all I am waiting on is: 1) My classification of SSA or AGPA to be assigned to me by HR. 2) Livescan/background check 3) Reference checks. 4) Final offer and my negotiated start date! It’s been a very long process, but finally after months of applying, and interviews after watching your videos, finally getting a successful conditional offer is great! I’m 24 years old about to start my long and successful career with the State and I could not be happier! Thank you again!
Hey Kent! I followed your advice on here and I now have 4 separate interviews lined up with various departments for the state. I applied to about 22 openings in April and May. Thank you so much ! I feel like I owe you a drink!
William Toon, first, thanks for the positive feedback! Second, you're living proof that my first level of support (these RUclips videos) ACTUALLY HAS helped folks like yourself. IMHO: it does carry much more weight coming from you folks than me though! Lastly, if you want to buy me a drink, consider a donation on my donation page - ko-fi.com/kent_calistatejobcoach. Best of luck on your interviews (watch that video and you'll do well)!
Thanks for the videos, Kent! Super helpful information. I watched your videos before my state interview and got the job! I have gotten 4 interviews out of 20 applications. 1-on-1 coaching was helpful for strategizing and maximizing my success on future interviews.
Do you think a non-resident can apply for a job if the plan is to move there? Or do you need to be a full-time resident? I lived there a few years ago and plan to move back.
Hi Kent, Thank you for your informational videos, I am already working for State as an OT. Now planning to apply for AGPA position. Do you have any video for that? wanted to check, if Master's degree is a MUST to be an AGPA?
All my videos are appicable to/for AGPA from taking the exam, to applying (with great SOQs), and interviewing well. You don't need a Master's degree or even a Bachelor's degree to apply for AGPA. If you lookup the Minimum Qualifications for AGPA, you'll find that any combination of experience and/or education that adds up to 7 years qualifies. Hope this helps. Best of luck! ;-)
If it's useful to anyone here's my short story. I lost my previous job October 2022. My wife has been with DMV in total about 40 years and had been trying to get me to apply long before I lost my last job. I applied for various DMV positions and about the new year we discovered this channel and a very good Reddit thread about getting CA state jobs. And this is when we both realised I'd not been completely thorough with my applications (Up until the new year I'd applied for nine positions, and no interviews). It was after the NY that we sat down and gave serious attention to my applications and how I was answering the SoQ's. My applications up to then I know were not even being considered, not because I wasn't qualified, but because I wasn't giving it my best. I expanded my application profile (Not to be confused with a resume) and tweaked it in places to reflect what it was I wanted the hiring manager to notice. My wife proof read it (Always get someone else to proof read; you don't notice your own errors!) and we agreed things looked more promising. There is a long delay between the final filing date and any feedback, so be patient, don't dwell on the ones you sent, and concentrate on the next app, and the next..Up until two weeks ago I had applied for a total of 43 positions and had eight interviews. Was made a tentative offer two weeks ago, had my live scan on the 25th May and this morning given a start date! Between the tentative offer and the live scan I had another interview with another two (which I declined) lined up for this week and next week. A quick word about interviews. They're not trying to catch you out; they're asking themselves 'Do I want this person in my team?' You get asked the same five or six questions every other interviewee gets asked and at the end asked if you wish to ask anything or anything not covered..Take your time answering, don't meander and gabble on. Answer the question but add some humility and genuine feeling into the answers. They're human too; and can probably relate to certain scenarios. And smile. Thank them for the opportunity and offer to shake hands with all of them as you look them in the eye. Good luck. Remember it's a numbers game. I got one firm offer from a job I applied for on the 1st of February. Interviewed 25th April and start 19th June.
Steve B, thanks for your current feedback on the process, etc. Couldn’t have said it better! Appreciate you and congrats on starting your career with the State of California!
Hello, Please look at the videos and buy the book. I was lucky enough to do a one-on-one with Ken for an interview for an SSA position. I took lots of notes in the session and tried to apply his tips. I can say because of him I got a job offer and will be starting soon. Words can't say enough but, thank you, thank you. Good luck to everyone.
Hello Kent, This is my 1st video. I have bought your book, very good and Thank you! I was curious if I could set up the 1:1 Coaching session, and how to do that? Thank you.
Do you have any information to share about all deductions from very first check and then each check what are they and if you quit your job in 3 months or 2 years if they are returnable ?. Not taking about union deductions and insurance, but retirement system deductions and pension if you know anything about it . Maybe to make a video too ??
Hello Ken, thanks for encouraging and teaching how to apply for state jobs. The statuses of three of my applications turned from "submitted" to "Active". What does it mean? Thanks.
First, you're welcome! Second, active means that you've submitted your application, the Final Filing Date has been reached, and the open window for the Job Posting between Final Filing Date and the closing of the hiring period is "Active". After the hiring period is closed, status will change from "Active" to "Inactive" or something to that effect. "Active" status does not reflect whether you will or won't be invited to interview or will get an offer or not though. More of a high-level status. Hope this helps.
@@calistatejobcoach I have submitted more than 15 applications so far, and only 3 of them are turned from being "submitted" to "active". Some of them which were closed long ago never turned to Active from Submit.

Hello coach Kent, I would like to know how much are once' chances for selection with gap of 7-8 years in job, but having 10+ years prior experience? Kindly respond. Many thanks in advance!
Chances are good I'd say. I had 7 years in a specific skill set and then a 10 year gap when I got hired at the State of California. If It can happen for me; then it can happen for you too! Good luck!
Hello Ken! I followed all of your videos and steps to having a successful start when applying to jobs through the state of California. I wanted to thank you for all of your insight and valuable points you post on your videos. My 1st application, I received my 1st interview and completed the interview this morning! I believe in good standing. The hiring manager stated there will be a 2nd interview for the role I applied to and informed me of who would be on the call. I wanted to ask since the Hiring Manager stated there are a few more interviews after me would that be a good indicator I passed onto the 2nd round or would it possibly mean I was not a good fit? Any insight and thoughts would be appreciated!
The Hiring Manager informing of the existence of more 1st round interviews after you and the existence of a 2nd round of interviews shouldn't be considered good or bad; the Hiring Manager was simply informing you of the process and status. I'm sure he or she was sharing that same information with all the 1st round interviewees. That said, if you've watched all my videos and did the hard work to prep. for the 1st round interview, my bet is that you will be invited to the 2nd round interview. I hope this helps and good luck in this effort! Best, Coach Kent!!
Hi Kent, one topic I didn't see in any of your videos is regarding the background checks (maybe I missed the topic). I saw a state job posting stating that they encourage people with criminal history to apply but with your experience as a hiring manager, what kind of things on person's background check would disqualify him or her? I know it is always argued that in general, it depends on the job and if events in your history is related to the job role like finance or roles dealing with elderly/child care. What's your opinion on arrests that were dismissed or did not lead to a conviction (yes, some of us do regrettable dumb things in life)?
None of the jobs I had at the State nor did any of the positions that I hired for required background checks. So I can't really speak to them. I do know that the vast majority of jobs at the State don't require background checks.
I've heard from some of my coaching clients that they've shelled out $500 and $750 in two particular cases for the same type of coaching that I offer via my RUclips channel, my book, and my 1-on-1 Zoom coaching sessions. I don't know about you; but I think that's an awful lot of $$. In these two particular instances; neither person succeeded in getting a job with the State of California. IMHO: It might be a better idea to try out my MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE, step-by-step process that has helped lots of folks get interview invites, successfully perform in interviews, and get offers and acceptances.
