Even at such a young age Leo DiCaprio's amazing precocity, depth & complexity of talent was stunningly manifest, nuanced & layered as his performances were back then, 30 years ago. It was destined to blossom incredibly, to the point that Leo DiCaprio is now the finest actor of his generation.
I remember he started his career on a sit-com called Growing Pains and it was evident then that he shone above everyone on the cast. I was instantly struck. And then when Basketball Diaries and This Boy's Life came out I was like 'oh, yeah, this guy is like a Brando or Dean.' Honestly, I think he did his best work around this time, when he was young.
I remember seeing this movie with my partner at an elegant film art house in South OC that actually served cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. It was one of my cherished romantic dates and I was playing piano jazz at a 1920s OC French Restaurant. And I remember after a fabulous French meal, and being a francophile and totally obsessed with Leo in those years, how shocked I was to see him as Rimbaud . What a daring acting move. He was brilliant and I remember that this movie "was banned" in many chain theatres because of the older man young boy intense sexual romantic and sexual relationship. In real life Verlaine was 10 years older than Rimbaud .. My husband was 13 years older than me and we met when I was a teenager. I remember being just flabbergasted sitting there in that theatre and then seeing Leo urinate on a guy in Parisian tavern, have anal sex with "Lupin" from Harry Potter, and then the scene where he is suggestively throwing his clothes off the roof into the street doing full frontal nudity. I was like ---wow Leo is going to be a major star. This movie was like 3 years before Titanic. He was already pure genius in Gilbert Grape and he hadn't done Basket Ball Diaries. At the time I was getting my masters in Music and had sung as a lyric baritone works of Poulenc with poems by Rimbaud and was fascinated about his life. I also find it interesting that most main stream Americans never heard of this film yet alone would have any idea who Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud were. Sometimes the lack of culture and sophistication in the OC was just devastating so .... art films was one of my intellectual outlets. I remember at the same theatre seeing Maurice (my favorite gay art film with James Wilby, Rupert Grave and Hugh Grant), and Kiss of the Spider Women (with William Hurt and Raul Julia), Sadly it seems today .. there aren't as many intelligent and thought provoking art films. I remember watching Total .. (as I'm also a method actor) and thinking shit .. to have the deep understanding of human behavior, and the ability to act like that. Leo was still pretty young when he filmed this. His performance in this should have earned him an Oscar, but alas back in those years Hollywood was still pretty homophobic. It is def. my erotic guilty pleasure movie. I would purchase but this movie seems to be banned in the US. Never found it for sale anywhere or on any streaming sites. Tragic as it is a masterpiece in art LGBT art film cinema.
OMG found it streaming for free on solarmovie. I'm so delighted to watch it again. I admit it . .This Gentleman prefers blonde. Leo was gorgeous in those years.
The only good thing about this movie is the music score. Except for the timeline, everything is inaccurate and presumptuous. There is absolutely no proof or solid evidence they had a 'love affair'. That all derived from a letter that Rimbaud wrote to Verlaine that could be interpreted differently. But this myth has snowballed out of control. And anyone that has really studied Rimbaud's life can watch this and understand it is someone's goofy fantasy about who they think he was, or his and Verlaine's relationship. Utterly ridiculous.

若き美形ディカプリオを永遠に納めた宝物なる映画であります。
Arthur Rimbaud’s life was really sad, literary talent sucked away by weird predators. Reminds me of Cory Haim.
Thank u very much
Nah cuz nobody is talking bout that crunch of da apple sheeee.
I get it now. This role prepped leonardo for Titanic and Aviator roles. All the same character. No difference at all.
He is more beautiful than most of the girls
