I hope she realises just what a massive influence she's been on people like me. As a composer and recording engineer, I can truly say that I wouldn't be where I am today without her music.
You know. Just watching this made me wonder. Pop culture artists, performers, and bands are constantly shown how much people adore their work. I wonder if game composers truly know what kind of following they have as well
As sad as this sounds. I would not be surprised if they don't. Compared to "Pop culture artists, performers, and bands" and sometimes even Movie composers, there just isn't as much spot light for game composers. There is just so much context and interaction from within games that many people remember it with the company that made it. For example, when you think of Final Fantasy, you think Square Enix, don't you? Most people (keywoard: most), don't really associate the game with the music composer unless they are talking about the music of the game, whether it be great or terrible. Part of that is due to the fact that, that's kinda their job as composers, the music is to enhance the game but keep the game as the main focus. The main form, though not the only form, of spot light a composer will get is the audience remembering their name from the end credits or by looking it up online. Now with that said, it's not like they get no spot light. Using Shimomura-san as an example, in one of her interviews a few years ago, she has mentioned how she gets emails and stuff from people all over the world saying how they really enjoyed their music. So I believe Game composers sometimes do know what kind of following they have, but probably not nearly to the extent as everybody else does. My entire statement comes from my own logic and reasoning. I could be completely wrong.
Some of the big Western composers know. David Wise, Tim Follin, Tommy Tallarico, and Jeremy Soule seem to know how popular they are. Chris Huelsbeck is probably getting more exposed to the retro gaming scene over the last decade, based on interviews I've seen on RUclips. So he's catching on!
this woman needs a lifetime achievement award for composing the most memorable soundtrack for a video game ever. Like her compositions were milked to death by capcom from the versus series to the alpha series and obiviously iv and v... that's how much a milestone in music she created.
@@Savignylol Probably she is fine, working some projects even nowadays, she is extremely talented and proved it not only in street fighter games but so many others.

That woman composed some of the greatest and best-known tracks in the past 30 years of gaming history. Edit: Damn it she composed Guile's Theme too. Greatest video game music composer to date.

Thank you for the very beautiful music ❤️ I wouldn’t have loved FFXV as much as I do now if it weren’t for the soundtrack. Especially Somnus. I am done playing the game 2 years ago but I keep coming back to your music. It’s amazing.
Street Fighter II is definitely in my top 3 all-time favorite soundtracks, not just for video games, either. Some of those tunes I can listen to on a loop and not get tired of hearing them. Truly timeless.
I adored the Legend of Mana soundtrack. The actual game, not so much. Lol I googled her and she was behind SF2, Mario & Luigi, King of Dragons, etc. Lady’s a beast. Up there with Uematsu, Kondo, Mitsuda, Koshiro, Yamane.
She’s right about Melody. For me tho, personally, their music went hand in hand with the great moments I’ve had in gaming. For example, I can never reminisce about legend of mana without having her compositions play back in my memories
Wow she really says alot that she is lucky.... She even said she got accepted when she did the DEMO TAPE which was just a simple recording (no PC) so nothing professional as today. Well all i can say to that is that this woman is LITERALLY WITHOUT A SINGLE DOUBT THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. That was no luck.... It was destiny.
I have 43 years old maybe is some psychological thing or who knows, but till this day sometimes I play street fighter songs and some of the best tracks in nintendo, Shatterhand, Castlevania and lots of lots game music.
Yoko Shimomura is one of my favorite game music composers! Besides her are others such as Jesper Kyd(Assassins Creed &Darksiders 2), Yasunori Nishiki (Octopath Traveler, Keiichi Okabe (Nier Automata), Kow Otani (Shadow of Colosus), and Toby Fox (Undertale)
I'd add Christopher Tin, Martin O'Donnell, Gareth Coker, Austin Wintroy, Mick Gordon, Mikołaj Stroiński, Marcin Przybyłowicz, Jeremy Soule, Michael Salvatori, Christopher Larkin, Chris Christodoulou and probably a few more
Yoko Shimomura touched my life in a way few ever will. She has such an immediately recognizable style that just fills you with joy. Her work with Kingdom Hearts still resonates deeply with me even if I've largely moved away from the series. Who could forget Dearly Beloved? I've always loved video game music. From Yoko Shimomura to Koji Kondo to Koichi Sugiyama to Nobuo Uematsu to Masashi Hamauzu. You all molded my love for video game music. Yoko may never see this but thank you so much. Your compositions are wonderful and inspire the imagination. You give the gift of hope to the hopeless. Dearly Beloved is my favorite composition in history. I was feeling sad until I watched this and then remembered there's so much joy in this life if I just look for it! :)
Her English is really good at 1:11. Well done Yoko. Hopefully, we hear more of her wonderful work in the near future. Really like her "Shiva" theme from Streets of rage 4! That song reminds me of Chun li's theme, which she also composed! Edit: Also, one person is jealous of Yoko.
I haven’t followed the subtitles much, but they are wrong at places. For instance, she says that looking back at the old music she made back then and the arrangements others make is like having parted from your child and then when you recounter it again, now it’s already an adult. The subtitles say that Shimomura-san has become an adult and she feels like looking back at her as a child.... errrr. No. She didn’t say that.
